Magento Layered Navigation & Duplicate Content

Hello Dear SeoMoz,
I would like to ask your help with something that I am not sure off. Our ecommerce web site is built with Magento. I have found many problems so far and I know that there will be many more in the future. Currently, I am trying to find the best way to deal with the duplicate content that is produced from the layered navigation (size, gender etc). I have done a lot of research so far in order to understand which might be the best practice and I found the following practices:
- **Block layered navigation URLSs from the Google Webmaster Tools (**Apparently this works for Google Only).
- Block these URLs with the robots.txt file
- Make links no-follow
- **Make links JavaScript from Magento ***
- Avoid including these links in the xml site map.
- Avoid including these link in the A-Z Product Index.
- Canonical tag
- Meta Tags (noindex, nofollow)
Question
If I turn the layered navigation links into JavaScript links from the Magento Admin, the layered navigation links are still found by the crawlers but they look like that:

instead of:
http://www.mysite.com/girls-basics.html?gender_filte...
|
Can these new URLS (http://www.mysite.com/# ) solve the duplicate content problems with the layered navigation or do I need to implement other practices too to make sure that everything is done right.

I'm not sure if you guys found a solution to this but I've used Mageworx with my Magento sites and it seems to handle everything I need. I do have to do some Mod-rewrites but nothing too much for a developer to handle.

From what I can gather about Magento is the Layered Nav can create seemingly endless URL's. Even if you were to use one of the modules created to make them 'friendly', you would still technically have reems of duplicate pages...right? All nicely re-written but effectively with the same titles and meta...
You may be able to put a wildcard disallow in the robots file for the parameter 'dir=' , which is associated with all the filters. I dont know how well this will work or if Google may on occasision ignore this or find a way into the layered pages anyway? Does anyone know? What if the spider entered the site through a direct link to filtered page...would the robots.txt file go by the way side in this instance?
You could in theory also use WMT to dictate that Google does not index pages with the 'dir=' parameter. Again, I am not sure as to the success rate using this.
Its one of those areas that has many open and unaswered discussions but nothing definitive anywhere to address the issue. Yet Magento is very popular and as you look at people sites who use it you can see they have some how found a way to sort this out. Id love to be a fly on the wall in their office!

Should I change PDF content?
Hi everybody, My Website is ranking well for several keywords and long-tail keywords. What to do about resellers duplicating content?
Just went through a big redevelopment for a client and now have fresh images and updated content but now all the resellers have just grabbed the new images/content and pasted them on their own site. My client is a manufacture that sells directly online and over the phone for large orders. I'm just not sure how to handle the resellers duplicate content. Any thoughts on this? Am I being silly for worrying about this?

Is tracking code added to the end of a URL considered duplicate content
I have two URLs one with a tracking coded and one without. http://www.towermarketing.net/lets-talk-ux-baby and http://www.towermarketing.net/lets-talk-ux-baby/**#.U6ghgLEz64I ** My question is will this be considered as two separate URLs, will Google consider this as two pages with duplicate content. Any recommendations would be much appreciated.

Duplicate Page Content
Hey Moz Community, Newbie here. On my second week of Moz and I love it but have a couple questions regarding crawl errors. I have two questions: 1. I have a few pages with duplicate content but it say 0 duplicate URL's. How do I know what is duplicated in this instance? 2. I'm not sure if anyone here is familiar with an IDX for a real estate website. But I have this setup on my site and it seems as though all the links it generates for different homes for sale show up as duplicate pages. Also you can see somewhat about the idx duplicate pages. rel="canonical" is functioning on these pages, or so it seems when I view the source code from the page. Duplicate content on domains we own
Hello! We are new to SEO and have a problem we have caused ourselves. We own two domains GoCentrix.com (old domain) and CallRingTalk.com (new domain that we want to SEO). The content was updated on both domains at about the same time. Both are identical with a few exceptions. Now that we are getting into SEO we now understand this to be a big issue. Is this a resolvable matter? At this point what is the best approach to handle this? So far we have considered a couple of options. 1. Change the copy, but on which site? Is one flagged as the original and the other duplicate? 2. Robots.txt noindex, nofollow on the old one. Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance!

Two different domains with the same content
Hi all, I just figured out that my client has two different domains with the same content, so the site will be penalized by Google: www.piensapiensa.es www.piensapiensa.com Should I do a 301 redirection from one domain to the other one using the htaccess file as usual chosing one of them as canonical? redirect 301 piensapiensa.es www.piensapiensa.com? Duplicate content on video pages
Hi guys, We have a video section on our site containing about 50 videos, grouped by category/difficulty. On each video page except for the embedded player, a sentence or two describing the video and a list of related video links, there's pretty much nothing else. All of those appear as duplicate content by category. What should we do here? How long a description should be for those pages to appear unique for crawlers? Thanks!
