404 errors and what to do
-
Hi,
I am fairly new to the whole seo thing and am still getting confused a bit as to what to do to sort things out. I've checked the help pages but I cannot seem to find the issue. I've just signed up so my site is crawled for the first time and coming up with more then a 1000 404 errors. I checked a couple of the links via the report I downloaded and it does indeed show a 404 error but when I check the pages all seems to work fine.
I did find one issue where an image if clicked on twice was pointing to an url with 'title= at the end. Now I have tried to get of that but couldn't find anything wrong. I'm a bit lost as to where to start!

Yeah I agree signing up for Webmaster tools is a great way to pull up 404 errors which SEOmoz pro tool have not picked up.

Hi Simone,
It sounds strange that you can access the pages ok but Moz crawl says 404, however, as James said, the process for for fixing 404 errors is to add a 301 redirect to the correct page. If the content is old or no longer there, 301 it to a related page and finally if that isn't an option 301 it to the home page.
Another good way to check what pages Google is getting a 404 on is by signing up for webmaster tools if you haven't already. You can then look in the crawl diagnostics and see 404 pages.
Hope this helps

Hi the best thing you can do is track down all the 404s which have the most in coming links and then 301 re direct them to the most appropriate related pages. If not just 301 redirect them to the home pages is the next best bet.

Homepage De-Indexed - No Errors, No Warnings
Hi, I am currently working on this project. Sometime between March 7th & 8th homepage was de-indexed. The rest of the pages are there. Found it out through decreased traffic on GA. No notifications of any kind of penalty/errors recieved. Tried to manually re-index through "Fetch as Google" in WMT to no avail. Site is redirected to https. Any suggestions would be highly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Redirecting 404
Hi. I'm working on a wordpress site, which got some old deleted pages indexed and now shows a 404 (also in the results) As these old pages earlier got content and probably also some links pointing towards it, what would then be best practice to do? Should i make an 301 redirect? Make the 404 noindex?

Should I worry about these 404's?
Just wondering what the thought was on this. We have a site that lets people generate user profiles and once they delete the profile the page then 404's. I was told there is nothing we can do about those from our developers, but I was wondering if I should worry about these...I don't think they will affect any of our rankings, but you never know so I thought I would ask. Thanks

Remove more than 1000 crawl errors from GWT in one day?
In google webmasters tools you have the feature "Crawl Errors". This one displays the top 1000 crawl errors google have on your site. I have around 16k crawl errors at the moment, which all are fixed. But i can only mark 1000 of them as fixed each day/each time google crawls the site. (This as it only displays top 1000 errors. When i have marked those as fixed it won't show other errors for a while.) Does anyone know if it's possible to mark ALL errors as fixed in one operation?

404 not working?
Apologies - not strictly a search question, although I am concerned that it may be negatively impacting my sites. If I enter an invalid URL - the "page not found 404 error" doesn't seem to be working. I can enter http://www.%sitename%/index.php/randomnamemadeup/ and it displays the homepage (albeit with a broken CSS). I can't fathom it out - any help appreciated. Thanks, David

Magento - Google Webmaster Crawl Errors
Hi guys, Started my free trial - very impressed - just thought I'd ask a question or two while I can. I've set up the website for http://www.worldofbooks.com (large bookseller in the UK), using Magento. I'm getting a huge amount of not found crawl errors (27,808), I think this is due to URL rewrites, all the errors are in this format (non search friendly): http://www.worldofbooks.com/search_inventory.php?search_text=&category=&tag=Ure&gift_code=&dd_sort_by=price_desc&dd_records_per_page=40&dd_page_number=1 As oppose to this format: http://www.worldofbooks.com/arts-books/history-of-art-design-styles/the-art-book-by-phaidon.html (the re-written URL). This doesn't seem to really be affecting our rankings, we targeted 'cheap books' and 'bargain books' heavily - we're up to 2nd for Cheap Books and 3rd for Bargain Books. So my question is - are these large amount of Crawl errors cause for concern or is it something that will work itself out? And secondly - if it is cause for concern will it be affecting our rankings negatively in any way and what could we do to resolve this issue? Any points in the right direction much appreciated. If you need any more clarification regarding any points I've raised just let me know. Benjamin Edwards
