Can anyone recommend a good UK service provider for Dedicated Servers?
-
Hi, we have just had a shocking experience moving from shared hosting to a dedicated server with a very large service provider. Our website slowed down, the server has been down more times than up so we have moved back to shared hosting until we can find a supplier that can deliver. nightmare!! If anyone can recommend a good company it would be appreciated.
Thanks

Rackspace is one of the more expensive hosts around. They simply aren’t meant for most budget site owners. But by experience, Convergent Internet Solutions offers the experienced technicians and reliability just as Rackspace does. They just offer it with more of a budgeted mindset “customer first attitude”.

Good call Keri , thanks ! We are UK based so I will amend the original question

What country is the target for this website? Your profile looks like you're from the UK. If you're targeting people in the UK, you might want to specify that, so we can help give you recommendations that better suit your area. If possible, you generally want hosting in the country you're targeting.

Personally, before I worked for Convergent, I had been using Convergent Internet Solutions for over 5 years.
Nothing but good things to say. It’s nice to know who you’re working with, when you can ask for a tech by first name, or giving an client number. I would call Chad, Rackspace is awesome, but really expensive. -
I've been using GoGrid for 2 years and very happy with the reliability and service. In my opinion they are chipper then Amazon when talking about the full bundle(Load balancers, CDN etc..). They usually have a 100$ free trial so you can try them for a full month

+1 for Rackspace. Very good uptime + super quick and dedicated support.

It depends alot on your needs and budget:
Rackspace and Amazon are good when it comes to reliability, but dedicated is VERY expensive. If you are okay with the cloud they both offer this and can be quite reasonable.
I like Rackspace as you have a little more wiggle room and it is a little cheaper than Amazon.
What are you needs/requirements in a web server?

Is it a good idea to direct a new url to a subfolder?
Hello everyone, I have a client who is in public relations. He is wanting to integrate SEO into his business and is hiring me to help. He purchased a domain that is separate from his existing website, but wants to keep the services and existing blog (which will include SEO) on his current site. For example, he has: www.example.com and wants to add a SEO folder which will contain our services: www.example.com/prseo the domain he purchased (as another example) is: www.prseo.com but wants to direct it to the folder he has set up @ example.com/prseo Can anyone offer advise? Is this a good idea?

Can you use schema markup to do this?
We sell steel plates. They come in a number of different grades and then in a variety of sizes. Generally we have a page for each unique grade. What I want to do is to use schema to enhance the rich snippet in SERPS to say something like width: 2 - 3.5m length 6 - 14m thickness 6 - 300mm Phosphorous: 0.005% Sulphur 0.005% is this possible using schema? would I use thing/product or another theme? i'm trying to scope out the possibilities here to determine whether it is worth spending time on. The the other more interesting question is whether it is possible to respond differently to informational and purchasing searches. So if someone is looking for informations physical and chemical properties would be best used in the schema markup. If they are looking to purchase then product characteristics. Can these be shown differentially?

301 re-directs to similar content, good idea?
We need to remove about 50 articles from our site, and we can find similar content to re-direct these to. Would it be a good or bad idea to re-direct this content? Or should we just 404 it? Should a 301 re-direct always be an exact match?

Can I Disallow Faceted Nav URLs - Robots.txt
I have been disallowing /*? So I know that works without affecting crawling. I am wondering if I can disallow the faceted nav urls. So disallow: /category.html/? /category2.html/? /category3.html/*? To prevent the price faceted url from being cached: /category.html?price=1%2C1000

How do you know when to upgrade hosting to VPS or Dedicated Server from an SEO perspective?
From an SEO perspective, how do you know when to upgrade web hosting to VPS or Dedicated Server? Added: We have a Dedicated IP Address and plenty of bandwidth and disk space. We've done a lot of work on page speed. What we don't need is slow-downs due to the sharing space. Our business is seasonal with much higher traffic for three months of the year. I'm leaning towards moving it up a notch. What is the next level after this? And yes, our web host just confirmed that some of the things I want to implement can't be done because we are on a shared server. He recommended going to Dedicated Hosting. And finally: If we want to be absolutely positive that shared hosting problems won't affect us, and to customize, and also to increase speed, dedicated server seems to be the way to go?

Is SEOMoz only good for "ideas"?
Perhaps I've learned too much about the technical aspects of SEO, but nowhere have I found scientific studies backing up any claims made here, or a useful answer to a discussion I recently started. Maybe it doesn't exist. I do enjoy Whiteboard Friday's. They're fantastic for new ideas. This site is great. But I take it there are no proper studies conducted that examine SEO, rather just the usual spin of "belief from authority". No?
