Subdomain vs Sub Folder

Hi.
This is my first question here guys and gals so please be gentle. We are creating a town based website that will hold news, events, articles and relevant local content. We are also creating a business directory that will be part of this.
My question relates to an issue we have regarding how the directory will be treated as part of the "network". Although we aren't 100% sure on the domain name yet, we want the directory to be found as easily as the domain itself. Even better, if the two could be treated seperately but strengthen the overall theme for the domain we'd be in keyword heaven.
Therefore in your opinion (hopefully with pro's and con's) which do you think will rank better in Google, Yahoo and Bing (or all three);
The directory seperate as a subdomain or as a folder within the main domain?So for example - providing we are including links between the two sections and the site is www.sitetown.com
Which is better for the directory itself?

There are a lot of levels here, but I will address only the URL format. It is accepted practice and generally considered more effective to:
http://www.blahblahblah.com/blah as opposed to a subdomain(blah.blah.com).the part that will be up for debate is the sitetowndirectory.com questions. I feel its a great idea for you to build a brand around whatever name you choose. This takes a lot of good old fashioned SEO but with the help of the community here you will be just fine. At the end of the day its up to you to make your domain work for you. There is some benefit to keyword rich domains, but these days we see a real trend towards brand, brand recognition and brand trust.

Should I move my blog from subdomain to subdirectory?
Hi there, We have a pretty strong organic presence on our consumer facing blog. Around 5.7 million organic clicks Year to Date. It's currently housed in Wordpress on a subdomain. Our team is considering migrating our blog from Wordpress to Sitecore, where our parent organization resides. With that consideration, we're trying to determine if we should preserve the subdomain or move to a subdirectory of the parent brand. Moving to the parent brand would also result in a loss of our custom global nav - we would inherit the global nav of the parent website. We're not concerned about traffic loss risk - we know that we'll lose some but we think the move to subdirectory might be more beneficial in the long run from an SEO perspective. We're mostly concerned about the users getting lost without the global nav specific to the blog. Thoughts/concerns? Thank you!

Client has franchisees on separate sub domains
Hi, a large client of mine has all of his franchisee network on sub domains and on separate wordpress websites (multi-sites). I have advised him that the best way forward is to use the main company .com domain and create sub folders for all of his franchisee areas. Does anyone foresee any problems with this going forward or do you have any advice to offer. I'd be interested in hearing what your verdict is on the subdomain vs subfolder war. Many thanks

Best Way to Remove Mutltiple XML Sitemaps From Multiple Subdomains
Just found a series of of XML sitemaps hosted like so: http://www.thesite.anothersite.com/sitemap.xml and defaulted to remove and 301 redirect but as this is the first time I've encountered an issue like this, an outside opinion or two would be much appreciated. Is the 301 the best option, should I 404 them or what?

Pages vs. Posts for SEO
Hi, I would like your thoughts about pages vs. posts for SEO. I understand the difference in terms of WP structure and have read the SEOmoz blog post about setting up your site for SEO success (http://www.seomoz.org/blog/setup-wordpress-for-seo-success). However, if you're trying to rank for a particular keyword, it seems that either one could work, from an on-page SEO perspective, as far as title tag, URL, meta description, etc. So how do you decide whether to set up a page vs. a post? One big page vs. multi-step pages
Hi mozers! Brand new to SEO and LOVING it! Having several key questions that I don't see answered yet, but I'll start with one we've been very curious about. Consider this guide we have for Forming a Delaware Corp.

We love this page, but (Question1:) does it lack better real "content" rather than lots of links to the guide process itself? But as you see, the step pages are all very similar, except for the answers and step info. (Question 2) Would it be better to put all our answers into the one overview page and skip having separate pages for each step? We like the process and simplicity of seeing one step at a time, but then these pages don't seem to have enough unique content on them. Related, at what point (if any) is a page too big with too much content and considered bad for SEO? Subdomain rewrite
Our old website had a staging subdomain that was used before I got with the company. We recently had the website redesigned, still on the DNN platform, but our staging subdomain is still showing up. The domain, staging.structural.net, shows up in serps and needs to be redirected to just the root domain. What is the best way to get this thing from working. If robot text is needed to get this subdomain from showing up, can you share? Also can you share the instructions you would use in iis to route this beast? Any advice is appreciated.

Are Subdomains Beneficial?
Are subdomains beneficial? I have a client with 4 stores. As it stands, they use one domain, www.mainpage.com/store1, www.mainpage.com/store2, etc. Are there any big benefits to making these subdomains like store1.mainpage.com, store2.mainpage.com?
