Can someone at the mozplex please update that antiquated directory listing you offer? Most of them are pay to play, reciprocal, or just plain dont exist anymore. Thanks

outdated site directory found here:http://www.seomoz.org/dp/seo-directory
not that directories are amazingly useful anymore, but with all the updates and vitriol thrown there way an update is in order. Its one of those "layup" link building tools but in its current state its less of perk and more of a boon.
Thanks

I am pretty familiar with the challenges with machine learned list generation. There are so many quality indicators that can be faked. headed up some similar projects to make these exact things viable. I feel your pain. I appreciate the one on one. Dont be a stranger. exchanges like this are what make seo what is.
P.s. one thing we did is look for any directory, scrape its categories based on their listings, rank them based on PR, and multiple other strength indicators. Then filter through the list by seeing who charges, who doesnt, and who exists
and the amount of outbound links on pages with less than 100 links, are they blog rolls, are they etc...
todd.
I wish you the best.

Long term, we definitely want to reward those who participate and help, but we'll need to expend some engineering effort to build a system that does that in a scalable fashion. In the meantime, though, I can promise we'll keep coming out with big improvements like the social analytics, new PA/DA models, improvements to OSE, the web app, etc.

Rand,
Well thought out reply. I am very sensitive to time constraints when apportioning time to give attention to the step children of our projects. Pehaps leveraging some of your existing clientele with a value added proposition(free time, part time contract, t-shirt), would take that task of your hands and give someone a little extra moz pride, without sounding needy of course It would certainly not make anyone feel that the product they pay for is only going to be updated if they do it themselves. The double win is super valuable as it clears up the time constraints for you and really steps up a a simple, but valuable product, and updated and frequently.
Thanks Rand.

Fair points. We've got a ton of items that need regular maintenance at Moz, so we tried here to build an MVP (Minimum Viable Product) to replace the antiquated list and still provide some value.
In terms of some of those directories being gone, less useful or pay-to-play, it's a tough line to walk, but we'll keep searching for ways to make this scalable, more accurate and more useful. We've got a bunch of ideas, but they require dev work, which means they're in the pipeline behind a lot of other projects.
Thanks Todd!

Great post, appreciate it. However, I was surprised by your request / recommendation that those paying for this service ( i believe its listed as a perk) should be responsible for policing it. The fact is the list needs constant updating as sites like these come and go so quickly. I am hoping to shed light on that fact, not just to simply bandaid the problem. Furthermore a lot of the directories listed do not correspond with the best practices espoused by those involved in this organization... paid links, bad neighborhoods, etc... etc...
Thought it was noteworthy.
Cheers

Hi Todd,
That was actually just updated in September (you can read a blog post about the update at http://www.seomoz.org/blog/seo-link-directory-best-practices). If you want to send me an email with any corrections (keri at seomoz dot org) I'll find the right person to send the updates. Thanks!
Keri

Duplicate Content Issue from using filters on a directory listing site
I have a directory listing site of harpists and have alot of issues coming up that say: Content that is identical (or nearly identical) to content on other pages of your site forces your pages to unnecessarily compete with each other for rankings. Because this is a directory listing site the content is quite generic. The main issue appears to be coming from the functionality of the page. It appears that the "spider" is picking up each different choice of filter as a new page? If you have a look at this link you will see what I mean. People searching the site can filter the results of the songs played by this harpist by changing the dropdowns etc... but for some reason the filter arguments are being picked up...? Do you have any good approaches to solving this issue? A similar issue comes from the video pages for each harpist. They are being flagged as identical content - as there are currently no videos on the page. | http://www.find-a-harpist.co.uk/user/39/videos | http://www.find-a-harpist.co.uk/user/37/videos | Do you have any suggestions? Many thanks for taking the time to read this and respond. | | | | | |
