Local Search Citations
-
Hi
Is there a checker where it will show what local citation sites a Google Places listing has? My listing has been claimed on the likes of Yelp, Qype etc but I doubt if the others above me have as they have not even claimed their places account
The reason being is that it can only be the local citations that is causing the following listing - or if there is anything else I would be interested to learn what it is?
to appear above
on a search for chartered accountants swansea

I would be curious as to why you believe: "The reason being is that it can only be the local citations that is causing the following listing...to be rated above...," the other?
First, your query term for the first link is: chartered accountants Swansea
If you look at DRP (first link - Google Places), the categories they have chosen up to the continue... are: all accounting categories. When you look at Harris Basset the first category is accountant, and the next two are financial consultant and payroll... This does cause a problem.
When you look at DRP, there address is ...Swansea Enterprise Park, Swansea, whereas HarrisBasset is ...Enterprise Park, Swansea, West Glamorgen... Also, you state the others have not claimed their places account yet the one you show, DRP, clearly states it is an owner verified listing.
But, even more telling is that there are 3 citations on the Harris Basset Places page that all took place in two days.
Is the company you paid to do the reviews the same one that stated the ludicrous assumption about local citation? Click on the names on each of the reviews and you will see that each reviewer posted two reviews to companies....The same two companies. If a lowly SEO guy can figure it out, trust me, the GOOGLE can. Even if only Swansea is chosen for a probability test, what is the likelihood that three reviewers for one company would have only two reviews each and that the second review was for the same second company? When you add in that the time frame of all six reviews is less than 3 weeks and that the second company was a window and conservatory company (really, they did not know each other but all three purchased windows within a week of one another and then, purchased accounting within 24 hours of one another).
So, you may need a real SEO team to handle your local representation. There are white hat ways to get citations from real Harris Basset clients (assuming HB has clients that are happy of course) posted on Places and other sites. Even with those methods, I never allow my team to have immediate posts one after the other for a client site. It is just too likely to cause an alert in my opinion.
I could go on and on about how these reviews were written but it would be overkill. Sorry to beat that long dead horse, but this is stuff that I see every day. Work on getting the real clients to review over a period of time and clean up the categories.
All the best,

Webmaster tools search analytics - can you get current position (not average ) to show with out having to click through
We are working using Webmaster tools position, then pages. Looking at the average position to improve our page rankings. A lot of our pages are already moving up quite well, so the average is not reflecting the current position Is there a way we can see the current page rank rather that an average, with out having to click through each search, (position, then pages etc.) it is quite time consuming.

Local SEO Question: Domain Wide Vs Specific Page
Hey Moz Community, Question about Local SEO authority and how it applies to a domain vs. landing page. Let me elaborate... Company is launching a new local out reach sales channel and merging it with our inbound sales channel under one brand. The plan thus far is to create a targeted landing page for local customers/leads. I have been tasked with creating the written content and making sure we are optimized as much as possible for this landing page to show up for our city. Funny enough for a lot of relevant terms we are already in the top 10 with little optimization (Also due to low competition for most of these terms) Two questions: 1. Should the whole site be optimized for local - appropriate schema markup, G+ business local set up, contact page with correct address formatting, building citations/local links etc.? To accompany our targeted page? 2. Will taking a local first initiative hurt reaching our non-local target market? If so will a very targeted landing page for local customers do the trick minus rest of local optimizations ? I guess what the question really boils down to is will optimizing for local hurt our broader inbound search reach/ranks in the long run? I want to be sure we are competitive to our broader audience and local audience on the same site with trying to get into sub-domains or considering re branding what is essentially the same department but for local purposes. Responses and sharing previous experience would be greatly appreciated 🙂

Tracking Numbers and Local Listings
Hello all, had a quick question about the pros and cons of claiming a bunch of local listings and using a tracking # on our business profiles with those listings rather than our actual #. Anyone have any insight into whether this is good or bad practice and why? Thanks in advance!

Practice Name vs. Dr. Name in Local Search
I wanted to get some opinions on an interesting situation for local search. Many doctors and dentists are found in one of two ways online: Their name and title, e.g. Dr. James A. Smith, MD Their practice name, e.g Smith Plastic Surgery, P.C Often sites like Healthgrades are providing data on the doctor him or herself, and the information can be tough to switch out. At the same time, there's a tendancy on the Dr's part to want to be listed as their practice name. Their site is often set up that way. How are you handling this kind of setup? Have you found a way to reliably associate (and format) a practice and doctor's name in a listing, in such a way that doesn't violate Google's quality guidelines? I know the drill for handling a doctor within a hospital, but this is a slightly different situation...

Citation building for service area businesses?
Hi Mozzers, Just recently came up with a situation where a business has a service area, but no address that would be displayed. Can you do citation building for a service area business like this, and if so, how? Would you just use the (otherwise hidden in Places) address? Thanks!

Is creating great content not important for Local seo?
I'm helping a friend out with Local SEO/Google Places and his content is lacking - no blog, no articles, etc. I've read the major "How To" guides for Local seo by Andrew Shotland and David Mihm and their ranking factors but I never see anything about content or linkbuilding (aside from directories).

How far away does your Google Local Listing Show up - and how to improve.
How does google decide if a listing from one city shows up in another? When I do a search for a lawyer in my city my competition from another town shows up - but I don't show up when I search their town. Only 3 listings show up for both searches - so it's not necessarily a rank thing. Any ideas on improving the distance your listings show up for? Thanks!
