The idea is that the more people are talking about something, the more popular it is and the more important. This is a life lesson and SEs are catching up to the social scene on the web.
People love to share ideas and information, but not everyone blogs. Some times we just link to other content, or share links that link to other content.
Good practice is to have a Like button on your site, each blog post, each product page, etc. And to have a Share This on each as well.
This is the Facebook Like button. I am posting because it is a bit hard to find : )

There are a lot of questions right now regarding how links will be valued by search engines and Rand's post that Mike recommended is a great place to start your research.
One other thing to consider is the power of social media to help you earn traditional links. I know that isn't what you are asking about, but it's important to think about. Twitter, Facebook, Quora, etc. can be great tools for building reputation, crafting relationships, and sharing great content with people who like to build links. As such you may get your greatest value not from the Tweets and Likes, but rather from the resulting links your social circle will create.

Hi everyone! I am looking to add my clients awards to the Facebook business page to add a little "pow" and give myself a "look what I did" talking point at my next meeting with them. I was comparing their page to the competition, and I noticed the competition has a lovely Awards section under their About. Do you know how/where this is hiding? Social Signals Inquiry Regarding Competitor
There is a competitor in my sites industry, and per various tools like opensitexplorer, quicksprout, and searchmetrics, they have an evenly amount of massive (100k+ per page) facebook social signals (likes, shares, comments) to around 25-50 of their top pages on their site. They have no social media presence in terms of a fan page, and they rank on the first page for almost every single keyword that is niche related. How could it be possible to naturally have the same number of facebook social signals to all of your top pages? What have they done to even accomplish this, and is it only a matter of time before Google recognizes the black hat tactics they've put in place to manipulate the search engines?

Social Management Software
Hi all Just wondering, what service do you use to manage multiple social profiles ( in excess of 50). Curious as we have used http://commun.it for twitter accounts, but gets tedious as we need to log in on several different accounts, although great service Also use Hootsuite but reporting is terrible ... How can i make our social network site rank higher?
Our site is currently not in the first 3 pages of Google. it is a social networking site that requires users to login/ register. Much of the content is therefore user generated and is as diverse as the users themselves. The problem is that SEOmoz crawler is not even picking up the keywords i inserted into the site. What Happens To Social Media Love After A 301?
Say you have a WordPress site with a number of posts that have all been given lots of tweets, G+, FB likes and other social media love, and say you are showing that using a social media plugin on each post that shows the counts of all of these. If you 301 redirect the pages to another site, will the social media love counts follow, or will the page on the new site have to start again as far as social media is concerned? QhqeL
