302 (Temporary Redirect) up and growing, how to fix?
-
Hi guys.
On my website I have an action that will only perform if you are logged into your account, otherwise you are redirected to the login page causing a 302 redirection.
When SEOmoz crawls my website, it gets all these redirections to the login page, but I really can't do much better so what is the best way of fixing this?
I've thought of using rel="nofollow", but I want make sure this change will fix my issue, both with the SEOmoz crawler and any other search engine crawler.
Thank you guys so much!

Hi Éber,
In my opinion, it's totally legitimate to nofollow those links to your login page, assuming they are showing the same 302 redirect and login page to Google. This will cut down on excessive crawling and possibly help you out with your Google Crawl "allowance."
If, on the other hand, you wanted to direct some link juice towards your login page, you could turn the 302 into a 301.
There might be other solutions, such as blocking the page with robots.txt, or using clever javascript. That said, nofollow is probably the easiest.

I don't think there is anything you can really do to prevent this. That's just the nature of the beast when it comes to pages that can only be seen by privileged users.
Typically, sites I've created, all the "member" pages are located within the own directory, ie. /my-account/, where I place a block on the folder within the robots.txt file so crawlers can't get their hands on privileged information.

Not really, my app is written in PHP and I'm doing a simple http redirect.

Is it using response.redirect in .NET by any chance?

After HTTPS upgrade, should I change all internal links, or a general 301 redirect is better?
I recently upgraded to https. Of course most internal links of my old posts are still http. So I set up a 301 redirect in order to make the old link works. In terms od SEO this is good or it is better to update all the internal links to https, manually? In that case can I do it in batch with a search/replace command in the phmyadmin database? any other suggested method? thank you

Redirecting to homepage ok?
I deleted a bunch of category pages (renamed mostly actually and thought they'd be auto redirected like my blog posts are but they weren't) so I used a plugin that reroutes any 404 page to the homepage. Is that the best thing to do in this situation? Google Webmasters says there are about 84 404-errors and this should get rid of those right? Is there anything SEO BAD about doing it this way?

Redirect a blog category page to the homepage?
Hi folks Following Penguin 1.1, I have a client site at number 5 for their primary keyword. (was creeping up page 2 with whitehat link building and tight on-site SEO.) However now the page ranking at No. 5 is for a blog category archive. What do people think the quickest / safest way to get this ranking directed back to the homepage is? Many thanks Simon

Use 301 redirects when deleting old products?
I'm removing old products (wines) from my site, and I've been using 301 redirects for each product page back to the winery page. My question is, am I using best practice? I want people who search for these now nonexistent products to go to the winery page where they will see what is now available. But does google approve? I've also tried leaving the product's page intact but saying that it is no longer available and putting a link in the text that points to the winery page. Which is better, in the eyes of the god google? Thanks!
