Social Media Marketing focus and priorities for SEO
-
Hello Mozzers,
I'm looking at Social Media Marketing and wondering what counts for most in terms of SEO - (A) shares and likes from specific web pages, or (B) followers, likes, etc., on social media profile pages? What does Google measure vis-a-vis your website?
Also, regarding Twitter, if a twitterer forwards on a tweet manually (by inserting RT) - and his RT is then shared, does that count for anything, or is it better for clients if RTweeters simply press the RT button.
And should I include URLs in tweets, facebook posts, etc? And do backlinks help beyond increasing website visitor numbers - do any of the social media marketing tools pass juice back to websites via backlinks? Thanks in advance :), Luke

You're welcome Luke.
Not seen any testing about the importance of those counters with respect to Google. I'm not sure they would have an effect...if Google can find the links in tweets etc. I don't think it would need to 'check' what a page says/claims the number of tweets is too.
I see those counters as more of a signal to human visitors...the 'implicit message of 100 tweets on a counter is: 'hey this is great, it got a hundred tweets, you should read it!'

Great answer jassy - and thanks for the links.
I suppose I was trying to work out how you Google is figuring out which of my web pages are actually being interacted with. How it measures that, takes it into account. I was assuming through links to those pages, and you've confirmed that.
Another thing I've been wondering about is whether those facebook, Google plus and twitter counters you see on websites - are they being used to provide an 'interaction' / 'importance' signal to Google in a clearer way?

Hi Luke, there are a few posts on the blog that might help.
http://www.seomoz.org/blog/tracking-the-roi-of-social-media and http://www.seomoz.org/blog/facebook-twitters-influence-google-search-rankings
I think the consensus is that social shares (by that I mean tweets, likes, facebook shares, +1s) do affect rankings.
If I understand the question correctly, A is the relevant thing here - social signals relating to the pages that you want to rank.
B - If we treat the number/quality of followers etc. as the 'social authority' (who said klout?) of your social media accounts then I believe (don't recall seeing any data) that social shares from high 'social authority' accounts will be more influential for ranking than others.
So, yes, put URLs in your tweets (probably want to use a shortener that gives you some metrics e.g. bit.ly)
Most links in social channels (and I'm thinking of fb and Twitter here), are no follow.
I do wonder, if another way of looking at it might be: I want quality traffic that converts...links can help with that, so can social media (i.e. even if you get no ranking boost from social media, if it brings you the right traffic then that's a good thing right?)

SEO Master accounts?
We just got off the phone with our current SEO/ SEM provider and was shocked to hear that we are essentially renting the FB pages and Google + pages we paid them to create for our 100+ locations. We were told that all the pages have been created under a "Master SEO" account and we would immediately lose any juice from these pages if they are not under their account. He claimed the pages were given their rankings because the account they are associated with vs. the actual SEO done. Can anyone shed some light on this claim. I have never heard of such a thing.

Is it possible to get high page ranking with no social media activity?
I'm curious to know how much social media effects the chances of being more highly ranked on Google. I appreciate it's important to 'be seen' by Google, but if articles/newsletters are being written, does it really matter if a business isn't using Twitter or Facebook, etc?

Social Signals CONFUSION
You know how sharing on social networking sites can act as social signal for ranking but I was wondering that what type of sharing on fb/google + ? does it has to be our site links all the time or any sharing other than our own site links matters too ? lets say if we are just discussing something on fb/google+ without our site link does that count too? social signal is sent only when we share our own sites link on social sites or through any kind of activity on our social fb/google+ page ? If you want to tell anything else connected with social signal please go ahead ..

Social button yes or social button no...
Hi everybody! It's quite clear that if you have a pretty, clean, compact html code on your website, Google loves you as a lovely mom does with her kids. But it's not a dream world and you have actually to choose between social and clean code. In fact to add, for example, the Facebook social button, you have to include some files from the Facebook servers. Even though the googlebot doesn't download them (but people do, with page optimization decreasing), it reads some javascript code. Moreover you have to add some code where you want the button appears. I think it hasn't much sense for the googlebot, so that could it be punitive for your website / page to place that bunch of code? In the end my question is the following: Does the social power win against negative factors like additional files to download and a bunch of ugly code in your body? social power > bad factors (file downloading+more code)?

Social mentions and 301 to new domain
Hi all, I have noticed that when moving to a new domain your normal links will move along with you when you set proper 301 redirects and use google webmaster tools. But I'm under the impression your twitter mentions, fb likes etc. on the different pages will be lost... I'm looking forward to your comments and ideas. Cheers

Identifying Social Activity of Competition in Open Site Explorer.
Analysing the competition in Open Site Explorer, as you all know the results come back with the following detail: Facebook Shares Facebook Likes Tweets Google +1 There is no link through to the pages that have liked, followed or tweeted the URL. I want to understand what the competition is doing in moire detail. How are these numbers actually defined? Is their any way (or whats the best way) to identify the individual pages that the numbers refer to? Thanks in advance. Justin
