Question regarding two versions of a page (redirect)
-
At one point in my SEO journey I had noticed some duplicate issues going on in Google webmaster tools (I could have been reading it wrong.)
It looked like WMT was saying I had 2 versions of some of pages...it looked like pages that ended in a '/' ranking differently than pages that have no slash at the end.
So I downloaded the redirect plugin and redirected many non / pages to the page that end with the "/". This was probably a mistake. but I'm trying to clean all of that up. (I'm also noticing that SEOMoz tools tells me my site has many, many redirected url's. I'm not sure why.
I was looking at http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/pages?site=noahsdad.com%2F this morning at my top pages and it shows 2 versions (one being redirected) of the page about my son who was born with Down syndrome. (Noahsdad.com/story and Noahsdad.com/story/) I don't know if I've built rankings for those pages separately and it would now hurt me if I did away with the redirect. I'm not sure why I did the redirects (I must have read something online somewhere.)
I'm wondering if someone wouldn't mind looking at the report and letting me know what the best way to 'clean' this stuff up...Should I go into the redirect software and delete all of the redirects where the non / page is being redirected to the / page?
Thanks.

You'll need to check the source code, as you'll be changing redirects rather than removing them, redirects will still be in place.
rel="canonical" href="http://noahsdad.com/story/" /> is a current Canonical.
rel="canonical" href="http://noahsdad.com/story" /> would be the new Canonical ( without the / )
-
Thanks!
So when I remove the redirect how can I check to make sure the new page gets the canonical? There will only be one page if I remove the redirect, right? So since it is just one page, wouldn't that page be the canonical?
-
Yep, some Canonical tags are being used. Will need to change the canonicals if you change your redirects ( removing the / ) unless it's automated that is.
Good luck with whatever you decide to do
-
Thanks. Like I said above I think my theme adds the canonical tag, because in the seo tools I can see many of links showing 'canonical.'
-
Using the / at the end when linking; if it matches the URL being linked to, then absolutely. If it differs to the URL being linked to, then it's linking to a different page essentially. Best to choose one method and to stick with it for consistency, whichever that ends up being. Usually, without the / is the better option.
You're right, with redirects, link juice is passed to the page being redirected to, however not 100% of it. Usually varies between 60% and 90%, as a guide, so some loss for sure.
With those new pages and redirects from last night; have you considered using the Canonical tag? Sounds like it's something that your website would benefit from using.
Here you'll find a **Guide to Canonical Tags**and here you'll find a Post & Discussion on 301 Redirects vs the Canonical tag which will explain everything you need to know about Canonicals.

I'm not sure. I believe the wordpress theme I have does this...

I was under the impression that it was always best to use the / at the end of the domain when linking, etc. Is this not the case?
Either way is fine. However, I choose to use the no "/" pages rather than the "/" pages. I do this because I get more links pointing at my site without the "/," and I want to retain as much link juice as possible.
Also, when you do a redirect I was under the impression that the link juice from the redirected page would be passed on to the page it is redirected to. Is this not the case?
A portion of it does pass. I've heard as high as 90% passes on.
I deleted some of those redirects but left the /down-syndrome-1 there...I have no idea how a url was generated with the -1 at the end, but it did. So i left it there (I may need to do something with that.)
Is it an exact duplicate of another page? If so, redirect.
Are you utilizing a "canonical" tag on the pages you want to be the "true" source? As it, using the "canonical" to say, "hey, this is the original!"

Thanks for the info, it helps a lot.
I was under the impression that it was always best to use the / at the end of the domain when linking, etc. Is this not the case?
When I go to my wordpress settings I see that under general settings my wordpress address and site address both have http://noahsdad.com (no slash) - just wanted to add that bit of info just in case it made any difference.
Also, when you do a redirect I was under the impression that the link juice from the redirected page would be passed on to the page it is redirected to. Is this not the case?
I made a change last night regarding a redirect to http://noahsdad.com/down-syndrome and http://noahsdad.com/down-syndrome-1 (both with and without the slash) I'm not sure if it was something with a slug I changed or something, but I had about 4 different redirects going to one page. I deleted some of those redirects but left the /down-syndrome-1 there...I have no idea how a url was generated with the -1 at the end, but it did. So i left it there (I may need to do something with that.)

Hi there,
You have a fab website dedicated to your son and his amazing progress, you must be very proud of the little chap.
Your question; there is some tidying up required moving forwards.
An example of a good redirect that you have is:
www.noahsdad.com/ is being 301'd to www.noahsdad.com
You apparently have 23 other pages being redirected from a version without / at the end to a version with / at the end, e.g. http://noahsdad.com/story 301'd to http://noahsdad.com/story/
The main issue with redirects this way round (non / pointing to a page with / at the end) is that with inbound links, the vast majority will point to pages without / at the end, so you'll be loosing some link juice through the redirects.
However, you already have many links pointing to your pages with a / at the end, some of this link juice would be lost if those pages are redirected. Though looking to the future, it could still be worth doing this sooner rather than later, so long as you try and request that your most valuable inbound links kindly have the / removed from the link, a time consuming process.
So an option is to remove the redirects that are in place, then 301 redirect the URLs with a / at the end to the corrosponding URLs without the / at the end.
You'll also need to update your sitemap.xml ( http://noahsdad.com/sitemap.xml ) to remove the / at the end of URLs once the 301 redirects are in place.
Over time, the URLs with a / at the end will disappear from search engine indexes.
So it's a calculated decision to make really, whether or not to change your Redirects around. It will likely result in some ranking drops (and more importantly, some visitor reduction) in the short-term, however would likely be more beneficial to do so in the medium & long term.
I hope that helps,
Regards
Simon

Duplicate page content
These two URLs are being flagged as 98% similar in the code. We're a large ecommerce site, and while it would be ideal to have unique product descriptions on each page we currently don't have the bandwith. Thoughts on what else might be triggering this duplicate content? https://www.etundra.com/restaurant-parts/cooking-equipment-parts/fryers/scoops-skimmers/fmp-175-1081-fryer-crumb-scoop/ https://www.etundra.com/restaurant-equipment/concession-equipment/condiment-pumps/tablecraft-664-wide-mouth-condiment-pump/ Thanks, Natalie

Will it upset Google if I aggregate product page reviews up into a product category page?
We have reviews on our product pages and we are considering averaging those reviews out and putting them on specific category pages in order for the average product ratings to be displayed in search results. Each averaged category review would be only for the products within it's category, and all reviews are from users of the site, no 3rd party reviews. For example, averaging the reviews from all of our boxes products pages, and listing that average review on the boxes category page. My question is, will this be doing anything wrong in the eyes of Google, and if so how so? -Derick

Moving from Bigcommerce to Woocommerce on WP. Should we redirect size pages into one page?
We are moving from Bigcommerce to Woocommerce on WP. On Bigcommerce, due to some bizarre reasoning the previous developer had 3 separate URLS for the same product in different sizes - S, M and L. Now we plan to have one product page where the sizes can be selected and 301 redirect the 3 urls to the new one. Is this advisable? Or should we just have 3 separate pages. OR should we have one of the sizes pages as the new page and then redirect the other 2 to this one? I ask this because the site has a LOT of ranking power and we do not want to jeopardise that.

To create extra pages, or not to create extra pages?
I'm responsible for a site where we cater for all kinds of medical & legal problems. I recently conducted keyword research that shows a lot of questions being 'asked' in relation to the conditions we cater for. Naturally, I want to create content to answer these questions. We have a page for 'Cancer compensation' - the 'possible content' that answers questions won't necessarily help someone claiming compensation for cancer mistreatment, BUT someone who asks a question relating to cancer, answered in the 'possible content' may find the 'cancer compensation' page useful. SO! Do I: Add this content to the existing 'cancer compensation' page? Create individual pages of content answering each question, linking to the 'cancer compensation' page? or do I amalgamate all the answers into one heafty 'resource' page that sits elsewhere on the site? What do you think? Thanks in advance. John King

Looking for a few hours of consult from an on-page/redirection SEO guru.
Hi! I could post our question here, but I think we will need an hour or so of questions and answers. Anyone consider themselves an on-page guru or redirection strategy guru? Here is the breakdown: 1. We sell digital media. 2. Most of the pages that return for us in the serps are indexed Search Results pages. From the research we have done, these are our highest trafficked results, but also our lowest converters. We have hundreds of thousands of indexed and dynamic Search Result pages we need to deal with. 3. We are concerned about Panda eventually giving us issues with these indexed Search Pages. 4. We would like to 301 re-direct these indexed Search Results pages to applicable product pages. 5. Looking for advice on a strategy to do so which would include the best way to locate the pages we need to 301 in the SERPS, being careful that the 301 will help and not harm us, etc. Note, we are just looking for a couple of hours of discussion and guidance. We don't need a massive SEO analysis or anything. Just looking for input and guidance on this one particular issue. If you just want to answer here for free, hey, we won't complain, but are happy to pay for quality advice. PM if interested. Thanks! Craig

SEO Location Pages - ALT Image Tag Question
Hello Guru's, I have a Hire Website whereby you can rent products online. I have created different Location pages for these which are in essence the same pages page but with different location specific urls, title tags , on page content etc etc. This helps me to rank for local search. These location pages also display 20 products per page. My question is Should I make the ALT IMAGE TEXT location specific for each of the 20 products . Example - Steam Cleaner Rental in "location" or should I only amend a few of the Atl Image Texts to be location specific. I don't want to come accross as spammy in google eyes but I also don't want to be seen as having duplicate content , images etc etc What do you think ? thanks Sarah.

Should we consider redirecting a high ranking subdomain page to our homepage?
My site bluecotton.com sells custom printed t-shirts. Our DA is 46. Our homepage is PA 55. The design studio is where users create their designs. Over the years the design studio has received a lot of fan fair including links from gizmodo and adobe. When I rank against our biggest competitors customink, ooshirts, uberprints.com I find that our domain as a whole doesn't look all that great. However, when I look at the history of our subdomain I see that we are more trusted and credible than all of our competitors. We have 10k links pointing to the design studio. Here is my question. What if I did 301 redirect of bluecotton.com/studio.html to bluecotton.com? Then I created a new url for the DS. This would not cause users any problems. In fact for many they would get more context around what we are trying to do and what we offer. Is this crazy? I never find results in google for the design studio. It always shows our home. That is pretty much what happens to all of our competitors on the higher traffic terms that are driving real sales. So why do i ask? If my subdomain is more valuable becuase of the design studio links then I wonder if I redirected it to the homepage if it would supercharge my homepage and propel is forward in the serps. Thoughts?

Page title
So if we have a main category page on our site (mines an ecommerce site), do we go for more than that main keyword phrase for that category of products, or is it better to just keep it by itself, and not utilize the 65-70 characters available?
