Ranked on Page 1, now between page 40-50... Please help!
-
My site, http://goo.gl/h0igI was ranking on page one for many of our biggest keywords. All of a sudden, we completely fell off. I believe I'm down somewhere between page 40-50. I have no warning or error messages in webmaster tools.
Can anyone please help me identify what the problem is? This is completely unexpected and I don't know how to fix it...
Thanks in advance

Jassy,
Thanks for all of your help....
our traffic is fairly slow today, but not a big enough sample size. if it remains low, i will report back and ask for advice...
Thanks!

Tyler, don't worry too much about the page rank - it only gets updated a few times each year and is (at best) a very, very rough measure.
Ads are fine and the one you've described sounds perfectly okay.
I'm in the UK and used geoedge proxy to search google.com - that showed your site about half-way down the serp. Try a new browser, if you use firefox, install chrome/safari/opera and try a few searches on one of them..but two of us have reported you're ranking okay...
You could also try adding &pws=0 to the end of the url after you've done a google search to try and de-personalise it.
Also, there are a stack of rank checkers...have you tried any, seomoz has one.
Are you seeing a fall-off in search traffic commensurate with the drop you're seeing in rankings? If yes, then investigate further, if no, then perhaps there's nothing to worry about.

I did a quick scan through the links on OSE and it seems like many of them are links with anchor text that matches your products 100% ---- Jassy: I typically comment on both blogs and forums using anchor text, i thought that was a good practice... However, the comments i am making/writing/posting are all relevant to the topic being discussed.
your site appearing in a long list of unrelated sites - in what is obviously a paid link. I'm not sure if that would be the cause though. ----** I don't pay for links, i do pay for advertisements on one website. There is a picture of my products (right hand column) with the alt tag as "plastic bins"... Is this frowned upon by Google? I thought as long as I'm buying an ad, on a decent website (PR of 5), that is actually encouraged, no?**
BTW, I just noticed that I'm seeing a toolbar pagerank of 1, if the site had a higher toolbar pagerank before, that might be a clue that google has somehow devalued your site...but I'd treat that with a heavy pinch of salt.--- My PageRank has never been higher than 1, however i am now checking that all the time to make sure it doesn't drop down to zero
Like Brian, I see you on page one of google US (I tried plastic bins) and DA is lower than others, in fact I'd say you're actually doing rather well compared to the other sites! ---- For some reason, i don't see myself on page 1 anymore for these terms, and i am cleaning cache and resetting history, are you positive i am really ranking there for Google US?
Thanks

I did a quick scan through the links on OSE and it seems like many of them are links with anchor text that matches your products 100% - I certainly didn't do any kind of exhaustive or thorough review. Perhaps you could try using this http://www.seomoz.org/blog/link-profile-tool-to-discover-linking-activity to compare your link profile against competitors?
By spammy, I meant (for example) your site appearing in a long list of unrelated sites - in what is obviously a paid link. I'm not sure if that would be the cause though.

Thanks to both of you for help.
Brian: I believe i fell off of the first page for the main keywords i use, examples: plastic bins, plastic storage bins, plastic storage containers and many others.
In terms of link building, i am submitting my website to a whole bunch of online directories, promoting it through social media sites like facebook, twitter, and google +, I am submitting it to a bunch of social bookmarking sites, i am posting relevant comments on blogs with my keyword as the anchor text (legit comments, adding value to discussion, not just saying "great, thanks for writing", and also joining the discussion on forums and using the signature field to put links (but all comments are real and relevant and add value to the convos, not spam)
Jassy: how do i find out if my backlinks are spammy? I'd love to know.... and what do you mean by : OSE shows a lot of exact match links from forums etc.
Thanks again

Google says you've got 21,800+ pages indexed and majestic says 496 linking RDs...so that sounds okay. Are any of the links spammy perhaps?.
OSE shows a lot of exact match links from forums etc. (at first glance) - did you know that?
They don't look particularly spammy... do you know how your link profile compares to competitors or (better) the people ranking higher than you?

I still see you on Page 1 of Google for many of the keywords that are in your meta-keywords tag for your homepage. Can you please be more specific about what penalty you think you are seeing?
Your domain authority and mozRank are much lower than the other websites that are on the first page for some of these keywords, and while you have many links in OSE, they are from a relatively narrow diversity of websites, where the other sites listed highly have similar numbers of links but from a very diverse list of domains. How are you working on your linkbuilding? What methods are you trying?
Because you have a partial match between your domain name and many of the keywords you've listed in that tag, it could also be partially due to Google's continuing reduction in the value of keyword-matching in domain names. Matt Cutts has said on a few occasions that they are working on turning down the influence of exact-match keywords in domains, and I would not be surprised if this was at least partially related to their changes around this. I have no evidence for this being involved in your current issue, but it may be related.
Thanks.

Page Rank Flow
I wonder if someone can help me understand clearly page rank flow. If we have a website with a Home page, Services, About and Contact as a very basic website and the page rank will flow to each of those pages from the Home page (i'm not including internal linking between pages or anchor text from the home page content - this is a question purely about home page flow via the main navigation). If the Services page had 3 drop down pages. Would the home page rank also flow to each of these or is it going to the Services page which then distributes it to the three drop down. So instead of Home page rank flowing to 3 pages 33% each - it is flowing to 6 pages 16.6% each. Or is it flowing to 3 pages - 33.3% then the Services pages get a third of 33.3% ->10.1% I know this is simplifying it all a great deal- but it is the basic concept I am trying to grasp on this simple example. Thanks

Need joomla help. site rankings dropped since upgrade
Hi, really having problems here with www.in2town.co.uk our site was always in the top ten for a large number of important keywords and since our upgrade from joomla 1.5 a month ago to joomla 3.0 we have vanished out of a lot of the search engines for important keywords I am concerned that we could be doing something wrong. two of our important keywords is lifestyle magazine and also gastric band hypnotherapy, but we are nowhere to be seen for these keywords. I must be doing something wrong. The site is an old site, we have been around for many years and have always ranked well up until now. We use K2 and i am just wondering if we have set up things wrong. for example under this article it comes under the category of trip advisor http://www.in2town.co.uk/trip-advisor/t ... -term-stay now when you delete the article name and just keep the trip advisor you get a list of the articles and i am wondering if this is damaging my site. http://www.in2town.co.uk/trip-advisor any help in helping me to understand why my site has dropped in rankings would be great.

How to verify a page-by-page level 301 redirect was done correctly?
Hello, I told some tech guys to do a page-by-page relevant 301 redirect (as talked about in Matt Cutts video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r1lVPrYoBkA) when a company wanted to move to a new domain when their site was getting redesigned. I found out they did a 302 redirect on accident and had to fix that, so now I don't trust they did the page-by-page relevant redirect. I have a feeling they just redirected all of the pages on the old domain to the homepage of the new domain. How could I confirm this suspicion? I run the old domain through screaming frog and it only shows 1 URL - the homepage. Does that mean they took all of the pages on the old domain offline? Thanks!

Google Indexed Only 1 Page
Hi, I'm new and hope this forum can help me. I have recently resubmit my sitemap and Google only Indexed 1 Page. I can still see many of my old indexed pages in the SERP's? I have upgraded my template and graded all my pages to A's on SEOmoz, I have solid backlinks and have been building them over time. I have redirected all my 404 errors in .htaccess and removed /index.php from my url's. I have never done this before but my website runs perfect and all my pages redirect as I hoped. My site: www.FunerallCoverFinder.co.za How do I figure out what the problem is? Thanks in Advance!

New EMD update effected my mom's legit author page? From page 1 in SERP to nowhere for her name
I think my mom's site, MargaretTerry.com was hit by this update for her name "Margaret Terry". Went from bouncing around the first page on google.com and .ca all the time to nowhere on the index. The results are now very strange, a mix of Youtube, linked in, and small book stores that she has done events at recently to promote her first book. I was checking after some of my SEO buddys were freaking out about their EMD's getting hit on Sunday. She is an aspiring author with a book coming out this month. There is obviously no ads or spam content on the site... I have never done SEO for it either except a bit of on page I guess. It sucks that people might be grabbing her book soon and when they Google her name nothing shows up. This couldn't have really happened at a worse time. Not to mention the hours spent building the site to her liking, free of charge of course 🙂 Is there anyone I can contact there to help me out? Shouldn't and EMD that is someones name still rank when you search their name?

Advice on importing content please to keep page fresh
Hi i am working on a site at the moment http://www.cheapflightsgatwick.com which is a travel news and holiday news site but i am trying to find out what is best reference content for the following section http://www.cheapflightsgatwick.com/humberside-airport What i am thinking of doing to keep google keep coming to my section of the site is to import content, what i mean is, to use google for keywords such as humerside airport and have the stories appear on this page as well as writing my own content. I was thinking of importing content because it would help keep the page fresh without my original content become too old but i am concerned about this and not sure if it is the right thing to do. i am concerned if i do this if my rankings would reduce because i am importing content and for people to read the rest of the story they will have to leave my site. i am also worried that google will reduct points for duplicate content. can anyone let me know what i should do, if i should just stick to original content and not import it or to import it and if i should import it using google news how would i do this. many thanks
