Ranked on Page 1, now between page 40-50... Please help!
-
My site, http://goo.gl/h0igI was ranking on page one for many of our biggest keywords. All of a sudden, we completely fell off. I believe I'm down somewhere between page 40-50. I have no warning or error messages in webmaster tools.
Can anyone please help me identify what the problem is? This is completely unexpected and I don't know how to fix it...
Thanks in advance

Jassy,
Thanks for all of your help....
our traffic is fairly slow today, but not a big enough sample size. if it remains low, i will report back and ask for advice...
Thanks!

Tyler, don't worry too much about the page rank - it only gets updated a few times each year and is (at best) a very, very rough measure.
Ads are fine and the one you've described sounds perfectly okay.
I'm in the UK and used geoedge proxy to search google.com - that showed your site about half-way down the serp. Try a new browser, if you use firefox, install chrome/safari/opera and try a few searches on one of them..but two of us have reported you're ranking okay...
You could also try adding &pws=0 to the end of the url after you've done a google search to try and de-personalise it.
Also, there are a stack of rank checkers...have you tried any, seomoz has one.
Are you seeing a fall-off in search traffic commensurate with the drop you're seeing in rankings? If yes, then investigate further, if no, then perhaps there's nothing to worry about.

I did a quick scan through the links on OSE and it seems like many of them are links with anchor text that matches your products 100% ---- Jassy: I typically comment on both blogs and forums using anchor text, i thought that was a good practice... However, the comments i am making/writing/posting are all relevant to the topic being discussed.
your site appearing in a long list of unrelated sites - in what is obviously a paid link. I'm not sure if that would be the cause though. ----** I don't pay for links, i do pay for advertisements on one website. There is a picture of my products (right hand column) with the alt tag as "plastic bins"... Is this frowned upon by Google? I thought as long as I'm buying an ad, on a decent website (PR of 5), that is actually encouraged, no?**
BTW, I just noticed that I'm seeing a toolbar pagerank of 1, if the site had a higher toolbar pagerank before, that might be a clue that google has somehow devalued your site...but I'd treat that with a heavy pinch of salt.--- My PageRank has never been higher than 1, however i am now checking that all the time to make sure it doesn't drop down to zero
Like Brian, I see you on page one of google US (I tried plastic bins) and DA is lower than others, in fact I'd say you're actually doing rather well compared to the other sites! ---- For some reason, i don't see myself on page 1 anymore for these terms, and i am cleaning cache and resetting history, are you positive i am really ranking there for Google US?
Thanks

I did a quick scan through the links on OSE and it seems like many of them are links with anchor text that matches your products 100% - I certainly didn't do any kind of exhaustive or thorough review. Perhaps you could try using this http://www.seomoz.org/blog/link-profile-tool-to-discover-linking-activity to compare your link profile against competitors?
By spammy, I meant (for example) your site appearing in a long list of unrelated sites - in what is obviously a paid link. I'm not sure if that would be the cause though.

Thanks to both of you for help.
Brian: I believe i fell off of the first page for the main keywords i use, examples: plastic bins, plastic storage bins, plastic storage containers and many others.
In terms of link building, i am submitting my website to a whole bunch of online directories, promoting it through social media sites like facebook, twitter, and google +, I am submitting it to a bunch of social bookmarking sites, i am posting relevant comments on blogs with my keyword as the anchor text (legit comments, adding value to discussion, not just saying "great, thanks for writing", and also joining the discussion on forums and using the signature field to put links (but all comments are real and relevant and add value to the convos, not spam)
Jassy: how do i find out if my backlinks are spammy? I'd love to know.... and what do you mean by : OSE shows a lot of exact match links from forums etc.
Thanks again

Google says you've got 21,800+ pages indexed and majestic says 496 linking RDs...so that sounds okay. Are any of the links spammy perhaps?.
OSE shows a lot of exact match links from forums etc. (at first glance) - did you know that?
They don't look particularly spammy... do you know how your link profile compares to competitors or (better) the people ranking higher than you?

I still see you on Page 1 of Google for many of the keywords that are in your meta-keywords tag for your homepage. Can you please be more specific about what penalty you think you are seeing?
Your domain authority and mozRank are much lower than the other websites that are on the first page for some of these keywords, and while you have many links in OSE, they are from a relatively narrow diversity of websites, where the other sites listed highly have similar numbers of links but from a very diverse list of domains. How are you working on your linkbuilding? What methods are you trying?
Because you have a partial match between your domain name and many of the keywords you've listed in that tag, it could also be partially due to Google's continuing reduction in the value of keyword-matching in domain names. Matt Cutts has said on a few occasions that they are working on turning down the influence of exact-match keywords in domains, and I would not be surprised if this was at least partially related to their changes around this. I have no evidence for this being involved in your current issue, but it may be related.
Thanks.

Does adding subcategory pages to an commerce site limit the link juice to the product pages?
I have a client who has an online outdoor gear company. He mostly sells high end outdoor gear (like ski jackets, vests, boots, etc) at a deep discount. His store currently only resides on Ebay. So we're building him an online store from scratch. I'm trying to determine the best site architecture and wonder if we should include subcategory pages. My issue is that I think the subcategory pages might be good from a user experience, but it'll add an additional layer between the homepage and the product pages. The problem is that I think a lot of user's might be searching for the product name to see if they can find a better deal, and my client's site would be perfect for them. So I really want to rank well for the product pages, but I'm nervous that the subcategory pages will limit the link juice of the product pages. Home --> SubCategory --> Product List --> Product Detail Home --> Men's Ski Clothing --> Men's Ski Jack --> North Face Mt Everest Jacket Should I keep the SubCategory page "Men's Ski Clothing" if it helps usability? On a separate note, the SubCategory pages would have some head keyword terms, but I don't think that he could rank well for these terms anytime soon. However, they would be great pages / terms to rank for in the long term. Should this influence the decision?

Google sees 2 home pages while I only have 1
How to solve the problem of google seeing both domain.com and domain.com/index.htm when I only have one file? Will the cannonical work? If so which? Or any other solutions for a novice? I learned from previous blogs that it needs to be done by hosting service, but Yahoo has no solution.

Page Not Found Help!
Hi, I recently (about 2 months ago) moved a blog from a separate domain name over to my eCommerce site to help with marketing. http://www.moondoggieinc.com/blog. I seem to have gotten it all to work right, but I'm getting tons of 404 errors and they all have " in them for example: http://www.moondoggieinc.com/blog/”http://www.moondoggieinc.com/custom_dog_tanks_and_tees.php” I'm not sure how this happened of how to fix it, but there are about 250 pages like this. I know how to redirect them all with a 301 in htaccess, but Im not sure if that's the appropriate course to fix this or if that's just putting a patch on something that's causing a more major issue. Or do i just need to write 250 301 redirects? Thanks! Kristy O

Duplicate index.php/webpage pages on website. Help needed!
Hi Guys, Having a really frustrating problem with our website. It is a Joomla 1.7 site and we have some duplicate page issues. What is happening is that we have a webpage, lets say domain.com/webpage1 and then we also have domain.com/index.php/webpage1. Google is seeing these as duplicate pages and is causing me some real SEO problems. I have tried setting up a 301 redirect but it wn't let me redirect /index.php/webpage1 to /webpage1. Anyone have any ideas or plugins that can be used to sort this out? Any help will be really appreciated! Matt.

Help us define a category/product structure please
Hi, Apologies in advance for the long winded question... we need some guidance with our category/product/options structure in our shop. We primarily sell car parts and lots of our parts have multiple fitments for what is basically the same part. Some ranges can have 1,000s of products. We can't work out what is an appropriate level of information and granularity for our product structure. We recognise the importance of having fitments and specific terms in the product title and URL, but we also know that having loads of almost identical product pages is a definite negative and fragments our SEO potential. But where's the happy medium? For example, let's say we have a specific brand of brake pad (we'll call it Brako) with 4 different product-models (Super1, Super2, Super3, Super4), each fits 100 different cars, which are made by 10 different manufacturers. We have a few different ways of presenting/splitting up these 400 simple products: (ignore the URLs here, this is just to illustrate the browsing structure & likely product page titles) 1 category for the Brake Brand with 400 product pages inside, 1 product page for each specific combination of brake product-model and car-fitment. /Brako/Brako-Super1-brakes_BMW-M3.html 1 category, 400 product pages, 0 choices on each product page. 1 category for the Brake Brand with 40 products inside, 1 product for each specific combination of brake product-model and car-manufacturer. Each product page would then let you choose from a dropdown which of the 10 specific cars you had. /Brako/Brako-Super1-brakes_BMW.html 1 category, 40 product pages, 10 choices on each product page. 1 category for the Brake Brand with 4 sub-categories inside for the brake product-models with 100 products inside each, 1 product for each specific combination of car-fitment. /Brako/Brako-Super1-brakes/Brako-Super1-brakes_BMW-M3.html 1 category, 4 sub-categories, 40 product pages, 10 choices on the product page. 1 category for the Brake Brand with 4 sub-categories inside for the brake product-models, with 10 products inside each.1 product for each specific combination of brake product-model and car-manufacturer. Each product page would then let you choose from a dropdown which of the 10 specific cars you had. /Brako/Brako-Super1-brakes/brakebrand-Super1-brakes_BMW.html 1 category, 4 sub-categories, 40 product pages, 10 choices on each product page. 1 category for the Brake Brand with 4 products inside, 1 product for each brake product-model. Each product page would then let you choose from 2 dropdowns, each with 10 options: one for car manufacturer, the next for car model. /Brako/Brako-Super1-brakes.html 1 category, 4 product pages, 100 (10x10) choices on each product page. 1 product page containing options to choose all 400 Brako products using 3 drop down boxes: Car Manufacturer, Car Model and Product-Model /Brako/Brako-brakes.html 1 category, 1 product page, 100 (10x10) choices on each product page. Or we could mix it up and split the sub-categories by manufacturer: 1 category for the Brake Brand with 10 sub-categories (1 sub-category for each of the car manufacturers with 40 products inside each), 1 product page for each specific variation of car-fitment and product-model. /Brako/Brako-brakes-BMW/Brako-Super1-brakes_BMW-M3.html 1 category, 10 sub-categories, 40 product pages, 0 choices on the product page. 1 category for the Brake Brand with 10 sub-categories (1 sub-category for each of the car manufacturers with 10 products inside each), 1 product page for each specific variation of car-fitment. Drop dowjn box on the product page lets you choose product-model (Super1-4) /Brako/Brako-brakes-BMW/Brako-brakes_BMW-M3.html 1 category, 10 sub-categories, 10 product pages, 4 choices on the product page. 1 category for the Brake Brand with 10 sub-categories (1 sub-category for each of the car manufacturers with products inside each), 1 product page for each specific variation of product-model. /Brako/Brako-brakes-BMW/Brako-Super1-brakes_BMW.html 1 category, 10 sub-categories, 4 product pages, 10 choices on the product page. Obviously, option 1) is going to be the best search match for someone searching for 'BMW M3 Brako Super1 brakes' but that page will have almost identical content to 100 other pages and very similar content to a further 300 pages, which takes it's quality ranking down a lot. At the other end of the scale of complexity is option 5) which concentrates all search potential for the Brako Super1 down to a single page, which can be well written and have great content, but wouldn't have a match in the title, url or product name for anyone searching for 'BMW M3 Brako Super1 brakes'. 'BMW M3' would be mentioned in the page, but only once in a drop-down along with 100 other cars and possibly once in the content if there's something noteworthy about that application. So which option would you go for and why?

Can leaving up old web pages no longer accessible through my site navigation hurt my rankings?
My firm recently overhauled a client's website. As part of the project, we gave the content a new structure, eliminating certain pages and creating several new ones. However, I just found out that some of the "old" pages (the ones we supposedly eliminated) still appear in the Google SERPs. Somehow, the client - who handled the coding - let these pages remain live even though they can no longer be accessed through the site navigation. This seems like something that could hurt the client's SEO rankings, but I want to make sure before contacting the client and suggesting they take down the old pages. Can anyone confirm my suspicion?
