On raking reports
-
Hello.
I was wondering why doesn't SEOMoz update ranking reports daily as opposed to weekly.
Rankings to change overnight and since other services do it (e.g sescout.com) I can't really why not this one.
-
In that (obvious and well described case) a middle ground could probably do the trick.
Meaning, how about doing it 2 or 3 times a week.
That's what Solomon would have done
Thanks for the reply Cyrus.

Really great question that boils down to economics, scale and accuracy more than anything else.
The good news is that independent testing has shown that Moz keyword tracking, especially in the PRO campaigns (which uses slightly more sophisticated tech than the stand alone Rank Tracker) provides a greater degree of accuracy than most other providers.
The biggest hurdle to daily tracking is processing power. When you track as many keywords as SEOmoz across various search engines across the globe, it actually requires more processing power than other companies have to muster. At scale, this causes multiple challenges, including cost and server resources.
Tracking also means checking with Google, so Moz has to be careful about not violating Google's TOS (terms of service) by making large requests. Other companies play loose and fast with Google's rules - and that's something Moz won't risk as the data is too valuable for our customers.
And because keywords naturally fluctuate daily, we've found that tracking keywords once per week provides more actionable metrics for most folks.

It's like when you are on diet.
Tracking weight loss daily (progress) is way more effective and challenging than tracking it weekly.

Daily tracking...perhaps for some industries, fortunately not so important for the ones I'm involved in
To be honest, I regularly see big discrepancies between the ranking reports and real results (using google/bing uk). I'd be happy if the results were more consistent first then more frequent could come afterwards.

Sure, but then again why not have bot daily and weekly reports ?
Both have (different) value.
As for the sleep - what's that ?:)
-
I'm with you on that one! But I can really see why they doesnt, like you say the serp changes every day but it's really the big picture you should keep track on. if your site drops one day and you make changes based on that you might get bad results since that could just be a short drop only to rank higher the next day.
By following the big picture you will have better grounds for making changes. I mean you have to sleep aswell?

Google RankBrain Update Affecting Ranking Reports?
In the past 2 months we have been seeing a large amount of movement in our ranking reports in Moz Pro. Here is what is going on: We run reports for around 15 different clients using Moz. We also track around an average of 100-150 different keywords for each client (some more, some less). What I have seen lately is that we have a week where the sites do great, next week a large shift down. The week after a large shift up. The next week a large shift down. Rinse, repeat. It makes it very hard to spot the trouble areas on a page or keyword when there doesn't really seem to be a consistent way of knowing what the trends are. It appears to be random, and the next week they seem to recover, along with some that do not. We will see some keywords drop 30 places, only to regain the majority of that drop the following week. Some of the sites have received content updates while others have remained largely untouched. It is very confusing to see this pattern, and I have tracked it for about 2 months. Is anyone seeing a similar pattern in their reports? Could this be related to the rollout of Google's RankBrain, the new AI learning tech from Google? Most of the keywords are tracked are not long tail, and are basic local business/service type of keywords. Plumber in St Louis, etc etc

Magento creating odd URL's, no idea why. GWT reporting 404 errors
Hi Mozzes! Problem 1 GWT and Moz, both are reporting approximately one hundred 404 errors for certain URL's. Examples shown below. We have no idea why or how these URL's are being created in Magento. Any hypothesis on the matter would be appreciated. The domain name in question is http://www.artorca.com/ These are valid URL's if /privacy is removed. The first URL is for a product, second for an artist profile and third for a CMS page 1. semi-abstract-landscape/privacy 2. jose-de-la-barra/privacy 3. seller-guide/privacy What may be the source for these URL's? What solution should we implement to fix existing 404's? 301 redirects should be fine? Problem 2 Website pages seem to also be accessible with index.php in the domain name. Example Artorca.com/index.php/URL's. Will this cause a duplicate content issue? Should we implement 301's, canonicals, or just leave as is? Cheers! MozAddict

Wild Fluctuations With Yahoo/Bing Moz Report
Whenever I get my weekly custom report, I usually see steady but moderate gains in Google or slight drops 1 to 3 spots. But, with Yahoo/Bing it's just crazy. +25 here, -47 here, etc, etc. Also, we even have keywords that we rank in the top 3 on with google, but not the top 50 with Bing or Yahoo. Not sure how that's possible. Nor do I understand how if Bing powers Yahoo, how we can have reports that show a dramatic increase (or decline) in Bing, but the opposite in Yahoo. Granted, not all the rankings are like that for Bing and Yahoo, but there are so many discrepancies, I'm starting to wonder if it's a software problem or something. Does this happen to anyone else? Thanks, Ruben

Are organic site links excluded in the rankings report?
If I'm pulling a rankings report for a specific subdomain and a different subdomain appears at the main result and the specific subdomain is a site link beneath it, does that show up in the results? It doesn't seem to in my report.
