Why is a section of our website dropping in&out of Google SERPs?
-
In July 2011 we started a news section that has it's own 'subfolder' /news/ (http://www.chorder.com/news/new_gear/, http://www.chorder.com/news/gear_deals/ etc.)
The whole news section is dropping in&out of Google SERP's since late October, as show in attached graph.
All news texts are real deal, written by our own staff, linked from homepage.
Any idea why this happens and how to prevent it?

The page you mentioned above titled "Epiphone Introduces Ultra 339...." offers details about four models of guitars. It seems like a category page which offers a brief description and then users who have an interest can click through and read more details. The quirk is that when users click through, the specific item page contains even less information (thin content) and the information is somewhat a spin on the content from the first page.
Please refer to the following page: http://www.chorder.com/electric-guitars/Epiphone/Ultra-339+8130/
With respect to pagination, my highest recommendation is to set up the page for your readers, not the search engines. There is not an issue with the number of links on your pages per se, but rather they are currently just a list of links. Perhaps you can link to category pages allowing users to find models they are interested in. If someone wants an Epiphone Ultra 339 then they will either search Google or your site and quickly find the specific model. The pages seem more geared to help people who do not know exactly what they want so they can figure it out.

Thanks for your time and great advice Ryan,
I will fix these issues and hope that'll be enough to rank again. Here's my plan:
- Create new URL structure for news: Use dash instead of plus or underscore character, remove all non-alphanumeric characters
- Fix trailing slash problem
- 301 redirect old URLs to new categories/articles URLs
- Create pagination for category pages: 15 news article links per page, to lower the on-page link count
- Redesign category pages to include more text: Will add teaser text for each news link, not just for the first one
I'm not really sure what did you mean by:
"- Even the http://www.chorder.com/news/new_gear/Epiphone+Introduces+Ultra-339,+ES-339+PRO,+Toby+Standard+IV+and+Toby+Deluxe+IV+110/ page is duplicate content from all the individual guitar pages."
Can you please explain? Thanks.

Why is a section of our website dropping in&out of Google SERPs?
I try to be helpful in Q&A responses but your site and web page have so many issues which can affect SERPs it is not possible to point to any specific issues. A few examples:
-
your site is duplicated on the web. http://www.chorder.com/news/new_gear/ and http://www.chorder.com/news/new_gear (no trailing slash) are two unique URLs which lead to the same web page and return a 200 header code. This is an SEO issue which needs to be corrected. The fix depends on your web server setup.
-
The page you mention, http://www.chorder.com/news/new_gear/, has no unique content at all. It is a list of 100+ links. The primary content on the page is "Epiphone unveils two semi-hollow bodies and two basses. Semi-hollows include Ultra-339 and ES-339 PRO, and the basses are Toby Standard IV and Toby Deluxe IV." The first sentence seems unique so I performed a Google search where another page from your site with a url of http://www.chorder.com/news/new_gear/Epiphone+Introduces+Ultra-339,+ES-339+PRO,+Toby+Standard+IV+and+Toby+Deluxe+IV+110/
-
Your URLs use "+" as a word separator where you should use a hyphen "-".
-
Even the http://www.chorder.com/news/new_gear/Epiphone+Introduces+Ultra-339,+ES-339+PRO,+Toby+Standard+IV+and+Toby+Deluxe+IV+110/ page is duplicate content from all the individual guitar pages.
There are many positive aspects of your site. You address a niche, you offer clear images, social logins, rss, etc. If you spend some time resolving the SEO issues you have the potential to do well.

Moving an entire section of a website to a new URL
Hello there,
Reporting & Analytics | | CraigFairgrieve
I currently have a website that offers services to both domestic and business clients. Currently these are hosted on a single URL, then split out .com/business and .com/domestic We're going to be moving the .com/business structure and content to an entirely new URL which will be dedicated to only the business part of the business. This will also mean a change in the branding of the existing content as the new URL will come under the name of the parent company. My question is two fold: (1) What's the best way to go about this? (2) What would be the estimated effect on the traffic? Many thanks for your help in advance.0 -

Google Webmaster Dropped Traffic
Hi Guys, I've recently implemented a new site design with a new url architecture etc.. I set up Google Webmaster tools in early March and went live with the new site on 2nd April. Since the 6th April (4 days after going live) I've notice a drop in impressions from 15,000 - 28,000 per day to 3,500 - 5,500 per day. Now I'm kind of new to this, so after I cleaned up after my initial panic, I checked impressions vs. clicks. Impression are down 44% and clicks 31%. Not bad I thought but then again what if I dropped so far off the radar I never made an impression. 1. So first question: Are the number of impressions of a keyword independant of ranking. So if I rank #3,445,234th will I still see impressions listed but avg. position reflect #3,445,234? So while I was thinking of asking these questions I checked Google Analytics for which I have just over 3 years of metrics. Compared to the past; overall traffic and organic traffic are the same if not 10-20% better. 2. So second: Am I missing something? Its a resort website so easter just ended and you would expect the traffic to match and drop, but such a sudden and dramitic drop in Webmaster Tools impressions does not match Google Analytics. Infact Organic traffic climbed slightly. Can anyone offer any insight? Thanks, Adam

Google Analytics censoring keywords?
The top keyword on our real time GA is showing as a blank. There's a topic of a sexual nature in our talk threads trending on Twitter right now which is driving a lot of traffic and I'm wondering whether Google have censored the keyword. The next few keywords are our name and variants of. Could there be some other reason why this word isn't showing up? Has anyone else experienced this?

Google Search Results inconsistent from different computers
Recently after some optimization activities - I do not see much movement in search rankings - my client is seeing the results on page 1 position 3 and I see page 2 for the same keyword. How does Google change ranking based on past searches and how can I get an accurate picture of what the actual rank is?

What should I expect after completely redoing a website?
Hello Forum, My team and I have completely redone an eCommerce website, which offers new SEO-friendly URLs. We have also taken care to optimize our product and category pages for specific keywords, so as to keep our regular traffic and increase the long-tail. In the old un-optimized website, many of its Google search results simply took users to the homepage, thus the homepage has a lot of external link juice. Our new site is optimized so that users are taken to the page most relevant to their query. For example (we are a yoga site), with the old site a search for "yoga bolsters" would take visitors to the homepage. Now the search results take the users to the yoga bolster page. These new pages don't have the amount of external links as the new site and I've noticed a decrease in our site's average rank in Google Webmaster Tools 1.Given our new site with its new URLs, should this increase be expected? (we have implemented 301 redirects from the old site to the new) 2. What steps would you take to ensure you keep your rankings with the new site? Are they any special tools you recommend? 3. What the best way to increase the ones that have dropped? Page optimization? Link building? Both?

Google Analytic Tracking Issue (&utm_nooverride=1)
Hello, We have a problem that means we are unable to track our AdWords and organic work at all. Looking at "/All Traffic Sources" and clicking on "Ecommerce Tab" in Analytics we can see that (made up ratio :)):
Reporting & Analytics | | jannkuzel
£2 is attributed to Google/ CPC
£1 is attributed to Google / Organic
But £100 to Payment Provider/ referral and also various referrals from banking transaction pages. All of the revenue/conversions are being credited to the payment provider or the bank security checks the payment goes through. After having done some research we have found that the problem may be that Google Analytics attributes the purchase to the most recent click (on the payment provider button) rather than the initial click on the cpc campaign/organic or direct etc. Some people have suggested using the "&utm_nooverride=1"
tag which we wanted to run past you guys and confirm whether adding
this tag to the payment provider 'buy now' button on our website will
presumably fix this referral problem? Alternatively does the tag need
to be entered into our CPC campaigns as well? Or can you please guide
us in another way? We have also heard that "cross-domain" tracking could be the solution. So we are really confused what to do and where hoping someone had maybe been through something similar and could advice before we fully launch into a solution. In addition, it should be noted that our 'Goals Funnel Visualisation'
of 'checkout' breaks up at the penultimate stage of the checkout. All
customers exit through the /checkout_process (penultimate) but are recognised returning to the successful checkout page but there is a missing link in between these
two stages as 0% pass through is shown even though they do return? Thank you so much in advance for all your help.0 -
Seeing / and no / in Google Analytics
When I look at my Google Analytics code, I see that the same content will show up twice, once with a / at the end of the URL, and once without. My site is at http://www.skypeenglishclasses.com. Does anyone know why this would happen? Is it duplicate content?
