Hyphenated domains – good or bad?

I have a client who will be changing their domain name from www.brand.co.uk to www.brandglobal.com. There are concerns however that this might affect the searches for brand terms and variants. Hence, there is a suggestion for going for www.brand-global.com. I’m aware that search engines are smart enough to discern the brand name in most cases, but I’m wary if it would impact highly on the brand search terms and would it be a better option to go for www.brand-global.com instead of www.brandglobal.com? Any advice (or reference to discussions around this) would be much appreciated. Thanks

I do not have hard data to prove this claim, it's purely my opinion and I should have marked it as such. I had a few presentations to customers recently and most of the time when I asked them to go to a specific page the person would use a hyphenated (spelling?) version or search brand1 keyword1 instead of brand1keyword1.
I personally first try a hyphenated version (e.g. -online.com).So I updated my response to the question to reflect this.

Can you share more information about most people tending to use hyphens when typing in a name? I haven't seen studies on that before and it sounds like really valuable information to have. Most of the advice I see is to avoid hyphens in the domain name itself as multiple hyphens can look spammy and it's more difficult to say verbally.
In any case, if you do opt for the hyphen, ALSO get the non-hyphenated domain. Otherwise someone else will get brandglobal.com and capture a ton of your traffic from when people don't type in the hyphen.

I don't like using a www.brand-global.com if you have a www.brandglobal.com it looks a tad spammy and second rate in my opinion. I don't think it will impact highly on the brand search terms.
If you do choose www.brand-global.com i would for sure buy www.brandglobal.com and 301 redirect it

There are two opinions on this in the SEO world and mine is that it is good. I like the readability and believe for that alone it is beneficial. To date, I have seen nothing proving it is a negative.
But, here is a question: Why change from the brand.co.uk to brand-global.com? Does adding global assist your client's needs in any way. They may be a global company, but why would you not simply leave out global and go with brand.com or .net?

I don't think it maters to Google, but it does maters to the person searching. I think that using a hyphenated domain increases the readability of the URL and therefore leads to better CTRs (and thus to a tiny advantage in rankings).
Also if someone misspells your brand name it's easier to scan in the SERPS what you were looking for (e.g. searching for "brant product" leads to brand-global.com, which I think is a lot easier to read then brandglobal.com)Personat opinion, withouth any data: most ppl. tend to use hyphens when typing in a name.[edited]

My understanding is that a subdomain is treated like a unique site but I'm not finding current articles to confirm this is still true. 2. We noticed that goods offered in our email newsletters used to disappeared from fisrt google search results page. Goods where in top 5 positions or even higher, but after email newsletters we didn't find them even in top 100. We suspect service provider of email sending is in blacklist? Could it be reason? If yes, how could we check that?

Will Google ever begin penalising bad English/grammar in regards to rankings and SEO?
Considering Google seem to be on a great crusade with all their algorithm updates to raise the overall "quality" of content on the Internet, i'm a bit concerned with their seeming lack of action towards penalising sites that contain terrible English. I'm sure you've all noticed this when you attempt to do some proper research via Google and come across an article that "looks" to be what you're after, then you click through and realise it's obviously been either put together in a rush by someone not paying attention or putting much effort in, or been outsourced for cheap labour to another country whose workers aren't (close to being) native speakers. It's getting really old trying to make sense of articles that have completely incorrect grammar, entirely missing words, verb tenses that don't make any sense, randomly over-extravagant adjectives thrown in just as padding, etc. etc. No offense to all those from non-native speaking countries who are attempting to make a few bucks online, but this for me is becoming by far more of an issue in terms of "quality" of information online as opposed to some of the other search issues that are being given higher priority, and it just seems strange that Google have been so blasé about it up to this point - especially given so many of these articles and pages are nothing more than outsourced filler for cheap traffic. I understand it's probably hard to code in something so advanced, but it would go a long way towards making the web a better place in my opinion. Anyone else feeling the same way? Thoughts?

Displaying desired domain in search engines
Last year I registered a hosting and domain account for Mummyzboy.tv. Then we added Mummyzboy.com domain to the account. Then the client wanted the .com to be the main domain so we: Made the .com become primary domain for the hosting account. Changed the webmastertool account url to the .com Changed all .tv for .com in the sitemap and re-submit it. It's been a month now since the last mods and over a year the the primary domain was change but Google still displays Mummyzboy.tv in his results, any tips?

How good is Guest post after Penguin Update ?
Hello 🙂 , You agree or not but 90% of guest posting is done for Link Building, we have seen several blogs on SEOMoz or more trusted SEO Sites that talk about Guest blogging. Everyone recommends guest posts with good content (Unique ofcourse) , valued content & linking to related websites. I have been doing Guest posting for many of my clients but from last 2 months, we got good success too (That is most of our content was approved) . Our writers did great job writing quality content, authoritative subject, providing do's & don'ts, tips, pros - cons etc. Though I have been trying to link to our direct URL instead of anchor text, or long words or name of our business not our main kws, just to be on safe side from Google. Sites where we posted guest post were minimum home page rank of 2 & seomoz's domain authority 30+ , so we know that our guest posts are not on junk sites or blogs. To be honest we have received around 35 guest blogs in one month (All unique content, never spun) linked on above topics, anchor links like I said above - other than that we have not done too fancy for link building, we paid attention to our social media, brand building, inbound marketing recommended by rand fishkin http://goo.gl/64VB5 & we never participated to buy link, buy guest post, buy any likes on fb etc... Still our ranks are not improved actually our ranks has dragged back, we have been doing SEO from last 4 yrs but we never did black hat, our website content is 10 times better than websites in front of us, our titles are unique and advice to human, but our competitors ahead in ranks talk to engines. Our website is up & running from 1993. That is too old and our service is top class. We used to rank well in most competitive words for yrs but new websites came in and started to outrank us. Now situation is this that - websites ahead of us are brands or microsites. I understand Google favors brands but that doesn't mean we are doing anything against Google. We have been practicing guest blogs from yrs but frequency was less. Now question is - Is Guest post worth, bz it is for link (ofcourse with good content) and Google say don't work for link. This is big dilemma We make good content and we need credit for that and link is credit which everyone wants. After penguin update things has started more worse than before. So modified question is - Is guest post worth after penguin update ? How changing my domain name brought back rankings.
First I would not recommend doing this to anyone else, but my circumstances were extreme.

Let me explain to those that did not read previous posts on the subject. I had a domain thatsit.net.au, I had never really promoted it as I used a keyword domain to rank in search engines but kept this domain mainly for email, but having said that it did rank ok considering, it ranked first for my business name at least.
A few moths back I decided to promote it and check the rankings, I was surprised to see that it ranked last for almost every thing,. Even my business name. Let me impress when I say last I mean in most cases absolute last and if not last very, very close to last.
I decided to get some links happening to move it of bottom, in my experiences a site that ranks that bad even a few links with show a big jump in rankings, it is easier to get from page 1000 to page 900 than it is to get from page 2 to page 1. The site had about 200 links and I pushed that up to about 1,000 but I was still at the bottom even for long tails searches where I was the only exact match on the internet.
asking for advice I got responses like you need better links and the such, this did not account for the sudden drop in rankings, as I knew the history I knew that thee was something deeper going on, I asked Google for reconsideration they said there was no manual action taken.
I should also mention I ranked very well in Bing all this time and still do.
By now I was getting paranoid that someone was stuffing me up somehow as a last resort I changed the domain name from thatsit.net.au to thatsit.com.au I did this about 10 days ago.
Today I searched for my company name and I came up #4 not bad from not being in the top 1,000 a few days ago.
Rankings are not where they used to be but I can handle that, I have 301’ed across all my links and have stated to change over the links I control, but as I still don’t know why the other domain would not move from the bottom as search results I am nervous that I may 301 over the problem.
I have never really done anything in the way of Black Hat SEO that would get me banned, maybe a bit of light grey over the years but nothing to worry about.
Anyhow I am non the wiser as to why things happened like they did. But I did want to report back to others that read the posts and thought that maybe I was imaging things.
I was never really depended on the domain ranking, what really bothers me is not knowing why the .net.au domain fell from rankiings and I still don’t know why.1
