Same image file with different alt text?
-
I have an image that represents 'widgets'. The image works for more than one kind of widget.
I have two pages, one optimized for 'blue widgets' and one optimized for 'red widgets'.
I would like to use the same 'widgets' image on both pages but change the alt text to be 'blue widgets' or 'red widgets' depending on the page it is used on.
Should I:
(1) use the same image on different pages with different alt text.
(2) duplicate the image file and have two copies 'red_widgets.jpg' and 'blue_widgets.jpg' and then use each copy on the page optimized for the corresponding phrase.
(3) create distinct, unique image files (where the pixels are different, not just the file names) for each kind of widget.
This is a simplified example of a larger SEO problem where I have 1 image that can be useful on 20 pages that are each optimized for 20 different phrases. Should I use the same image with 20 different alt tags, or create 20 identical (but renamed) copies of the image, or create 20 slightly different image files (with different pixels in each image)?
Thanks.

I think this also has something to do with user experience as well as SEO. You want to provide quality content for both Google and more importantly your user. Does this image provide value to your user?
If the image provides value to each of those "widgets" then you should use a different image on each page specific to "blue widgets", "red widgets", etc..
If the image isnt really needed for user value and your just using it fo SEO. I have used the same image on different pages WITH different file names with no problem before, like you sad "red_widgets.jpg" & "blue_widgets.jpg" can be the same file. An easy way to do this is to just duplicate and rename in FTP rather than saving new files in PS.
So either way I wouldn't use the same image with different ALT tags. Its worth it to go the extra mile on this one.

Do you Index your Image Repository?
On our backend system, when an image is uploaded it is saved to a repository. For example: If you upload a picture of a shark it will go to - oursite.com/uploads as shark.png When you use a picture of this shark on a blog post it will show the source as oursite.com/uploads/shark.png This repository (/uploads) is currently being indexed. Is it a good idea to index our repository? Will Google not be able to see the images if it can't crawl the repository link (we're in the process of adding alt text to all of our images ). Thanks

Sitelinks Issue - Different Languages
Hey folks, We run different ccTLD's for revolveclothing.com (revolveclothing.es, revolveclothing.com.br, etc. etc.) and they all have their own WMT/Google Console with their own href lang tags etc. The problem is this. https://www.google.fr/#q=revolve+clothing When you look at the sitelinks, you'll see that one of them (sales page) happens to be in Portuguese on the French site. Can anyone investigate and see why?

Are permalinks ending in / different than permalinks with nothing at the end?
In my Google Analytics, I have different stats for what I think is the same page, win-a-party and win-a-party/ I searched all over for the win-a-party/ page and I couldn't find it anywhere. Why would it be tracking these differently? Should I set a 301 from win-a-party/ to win-a-party?

Changing images on site without losing ranking
A number of images on my site rank very well under google image search but need to be replaced with updated versions. If I keep the file name and pixel dimensions identical will switching the image effect my rankings? Thanks!

Does Google see page with Trailing Slash as different
My company is purchasing another company's website. We are moving their entire site onto our CMS and the IT guys are working hard to replicate the URL structure. Several of the category pages are changing slightly and I am not sure if it matters: Old URL - http://www.DOMAIN.com/products/adults New URL - http://www.DOMAIN.com/products/adults**/** Notice the trailing slash? Will Google treat the new page as the same as the old one or as completely different (i.e. new) page? P.S. - Yes, I can setup 301s but since these pages hold decent rankings I'd really like to keep it exactly the same.

Robots.txt file getting a 500 error - is this a problem?
Hello all! While doing some routine health checks on a few of our client sites, I spotted that a new client of ours - who's website was not designed built by us - is returning a 500 internal server error when I try to look at the robots.txt file. As we don't host / maintain their site, I would have to go through their head office to get this changed, which isn't a problem but I just wanted to check whether this error will actually be having a negative effect on their site / whether there's a benefit to getting this changed? Thanks in advance!
