Why do I get duplicate content errors just for tags I place on blog entries?
-
I the SEO MOZ crawl diagnostics for my site, www.heartspm.com, I am getting over 100 duplicate content errors on links built from tags on blog entries. I do have the original base blog entry in my site map not referencing the tags.
Similarly, I am getting almost 200 duplicate meta description errors in Google Webmaster Tools associated with links automatically generated from tags on my blog. I have more understanding that I could get these errors from my forum, since the forum entries are not in the sitemap, but the blog entries are there in the site map.
I thought the tags were only there to help people search by category. I don't understand why every tag becomes its' own link. I can see how this falsely creates the impression of a lot of duplicate data.
As seen in GWT:
Pages with duplicate meta descriptions Pages [ Customer concerns about the use of home water by pest control companies.](javascript:dropInfo('zip_0div', 'none', document.getElementById('zip_0zipimg'), 'none', null);)
/category/job-site-requirements
/tag/cost-of-water
/tag/irrigation-usage
/tag/save-water
/tag/standard-industry-practice
/tag/water-use
6 [ Pest control operator draws analogy between Children's Day and the state of the pest control industr](javascript:dropInfo('zip_1div', 'none', document.getElementById('zip_1zipimg'), 'none', null);)
/tag/children-in-modern-world
/tag/children
/tag/childrens-day
/tag/conservation-medicine
/tag/ecowise-certified
/tag/estonia

Nice if you can get your tags to reflect the broad range of topics covered by your site, but I think sometimes it can give a visitor the perception that your content is a little thin when you only have one article against each topic.
Say you're reading an article, you see that it's tagged with the topic you're interested in, click on that tag and only get the one article that you've just read.
When deciding on tags to use, try and think of how your visitors may wish to explore your content. Remember to try and maintain an external perspective and use tags that are meaningful to your visitors.
If you've got the time and enough traffic to give you the info, you could use your analytics data to see how people are using tags vs. site search for example.
Of course, as you point out, this doesn't have anything to do with the duplicate content problem.

Doug, thank you so much for responding quickly. I will have to explore the archive. I really haven't ever explored this section. You've given me a new place to research and I appreciate that.
As far as reducing the number of tags, that I don't understand as being an issue. Because if I am doing something wrong, i.e. presenting the whole article via tags rather than references to it, that is the problem, whether I have 2 tags or 20 tags. I want to find a solution that will solve the core issue regardless of the number of tags created.
Is that a different reason that you suggest reducing the number of tags? I have heard around town that it is good not to have so many tags, but shouldn't I create them if a post covers a wide range of topics. For example, if I wrote one post about a trip to Europe, chosing not to divide it into 15 posts for 15 countries, wouldn't I want to create a tag for each of the countries I mention in the post?
Doug, thanks again.

As you mention, you use tags to give visitors the ability to browse articles with that cover the same subject matter. Normal practice would be to give the visitor a list of articles that have been tagged with this term.
A list of articles shouldn't flag up as a duplicate of any of the other article pages.
However, I notice that on a couple of the tag pages I took a look at that I just get one article being displayed, and being displayed in full. This is obviously going to be a duplicate of the original article.
I suspect that this is because for a number of the tags there is only one article to be returned.
I would look at how you are presenting articles when listed in the "tag archive" view and perhaps only display the introduction to the page with a link to the full article.
You may also want to think about the tags you are using so that you have fewer tags with only one article.
Hope this helps!

Purchasing duplicate content
Morning all, I have a client who is planning to expand their product range (online dictionary sites) to new markets and are considering the acquisition of data sets from low ranked competitors to supplement their own original data. They are quite large content sets and would mean a very high percentage of the site (hosted on a new sub domain) would be made up of duplicate content. Just to clarify, the competitor's content would stay online as well. I need to lay out the pros and cons of taking this approach so that they can move forward knowing the full facts. As I see it, this approach would mean forgoing ranking for most of the site and would need a heavy dose of original content as well as supplementing the data on page to build around the data. My main concern would be that launching with this level of duplicate data would end up damaging the authority of the site and subsequently the overall domain. I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Categories VS Tag Duplicate Content
Hello Moz community, I have a question about categories and tags . Our customer www.elshow.pe just had a redesign of its website. We use the same categories listed before . The only change was that two sub categories were added ( these sub-categories were popular tags before ) .Then now I have 2 URL's covering the same content: The first is the URL of the subcategory : www.elshow.pe/realitys/combate/ The second is the URL that is generated by the tag "combate" that is www.elshow.pe/noticias/combate/ I have the same with the second sub category: "Esto es guerra" www.elshow.pe/realitys/esto-es-guerra/ www.elshow.pe/noticias/esto-es-guerra/ The problem is when I search the keyword "combate" in my country (Perú), the URL that positions is the tag URL in 1st page. But, when I search for "esto es guerra" the URL that positions is the **sub category **in the second page. I also check in OSE both links and sub categories goes better than tags. So what do you guys recommend for this? 301 redirect? canonicals? Any coment is welcome. Thanks a lot for your time. Italo,

Duplicate content on charity website
Hi Mozers, We are working on a website for a UK charity – they are a hospice and have two distinct brands, one for their adult services and another for their children’s services. They currently have two different websites which have a large number of pages that contain identical text. We spoke with them and agreed that it would be better to combine the websites under one URL – that way a number of the duplicate pages could be reduced as they are relevant to both brands. What seamed like a good idea initially is beginning to not look so good now. We had planned to use CSS to load different style sheets for each brand – depending on the referring URL (adult / Child) the page would display the appropriate branding. This will will work well up to a point. What we can’t work out is how to style the page if it is the initial landing page – the brands are quite different and we need to get this right. It is not such an issue for the management type pages (board of trustees etc) as they govern both identities. The issue is the donation, fundraising pages – they need to be found, and we are concerned that users will be confused if one of those pages is the initial landing page and they are served the wrong brand. We have thought of making one page the main page and using rel canonical on the other one, but that will affect its ability to be found in the search engines. Really not sure what the best way to move forward would be, any suggestions / guidance would be much appreciated. Thanks Fraser .

Duplicate content on job sites
Hi, I have a question regarding job boards. Many job advertisers will upload the same job description to multiple websites e.g. monster, gumtree, etc. This would therefore be viewed as duplicate content. What is the best way to handle this if we want to ensure our particular site ranks well? Thanks in advance for the help. H

Would Google Call These Pages Duplicate Content?
Our Web store, http://www.audiobooksonline.com/index.html, has struggled with duplicate content issues for some time. One aspect of duplicate content is a page like this: http://www.audiobooksonline.com/out-of-publication-audio-books-book-audiobook-audiobooks.html. When an audio book title goes out-of-publication we keep the page at our store and display a http://www.audiobooksonline.com/out-of-publication-audio-books-book-audiobook-audiobooks.html whenever a visitor attempts to visit a specific title that is OOP. There are several thousand OOP pages. Would Google consider these OOP pages duplicate content?

Duplicate Content on SEO Pages
I'm trying to create a bunch of content pages, and I want to know if the shortcut I took is going to penalize me for duplicate content. Some background: we are an airport ground transportation search engine(www.mozio.com), and we constructed several airport transportation pages with the providers in a particular area listed. However, the problem is, sometimes in a certain region multiple of the same providers serve the same places. For instance, NYAS serves both JFK and LGA, and obviously SuperShuttle serves ~200 airports. So this means for every airport's page, they have the super shuttle box. All the provider info is stored in a database with tags for the airports they serve, and then we dynamically create the page. A good example follows: http://www.mozio.com/lga_airport_transportation/ http://www.mozio.com/jfk_airport_transportation/ http://www.mozio.com/ewr_airport_transportation/ All 3 of those pages have a lot in common. Now, I'm not sure, but they started out working decently, but as I added more and more pages the efficacy of them went down on the whole. Is what I've done qualify as "duplicate content", and would I be better off getting rid of some of the pages or somehow consolidating the info into a master page? Thanks!
