One Domain or Four?

Hi,
We are coming to a bit of a crossroads at our company. Our current website www.revolutioninc.co.uk is ranking half decently in some of our main keywords and is moving in the correct direction. However.
There is talk of us now producing a different website for each of our services Web Design, Graphic Design, Marketing and Print. I think I see the benefits of doing 4 seperately in terms of bounce rate probably improving, being able to produce a more concentrated amount of content per site, etc.
We have a meeting on it tomorrow and I do have a good few key points to discuss regarding the advantages. Initially however, does anybody here have an opinion of the potential pitfalls/benefits of following this route. I'm thinking also in regards to the direction google is heading.
Any opinion is appreciated, good or bad, as I want to put as informed decision as possible across.

If you are able to buy all those domains do it! and keep it from you competition, if you already got then, that was a smart move!

I went through a great deal of stress thinking about the same thing as you - I have several great domains that complement my main domain very well. Considering that they are industry terms, they would bolster what I do even more. I went through every possible analysis and came to this conclusion and hope it helps you out.
**1) If it's about your brand, then it's about your brand. **
Sounds simple and stupid but it's true. Taking each domain separately is nice but people were always most impressed with the main one. And at the end of the day, when they wanted to easily find everything, they expected it to be on my main domain. They expected to interact with me at my primary domain. They did not expect to take out accounts on three web sites and write to me at three email addresses.
2) Domain authority issue with SEO. This has already been mentioned so I won't expound except to say less is less and dividing what you have elsewhere makes you a small fish in a smaller niche rather than a larger fish in a bigger sea.
3) Managing 1 site is much easier than integrating 4. Subdomains are a pain to manage more than subdirectories. It only gets more challenging when you're moving to completely separate domains, may want to deal with one single database for all, firewalls, etc. It's yet another hassle you may not need or want to deal with.
So what am I doing? I'm going to set up little silo sites on each of those domains and primarily use them as doorways into my primary domain. They will have RSS feeds from our main sites, some other rss feeds from some other locations and might actually attract some unique content there as well. Nice to have but my primary focus is on my main domain.
And after reading dozens of posts on this issue, I'm very glad to have made a decision and moving in that direction. If I ever want to move my content to those domains, I'll do just that when the time comes. Best of luck to you.

Benefits of four separate domains:
If you own domains with your keywords in them, then the keyword relevancy would be a reason to go in that direction.
For example:
Assuming those aren't the domains in question, and they're more like revolutionincwebdesign.com, then the keyword relevancy won't be much of a benefit.
Pitfalls of four separate domains:
As Gareth and Brina said, you'll be splitting your domain authority and you'll need to quadruple your link building efforts just to stay even.
Bottom line, unless these are killer domains, or you're a holding company with different and unrelated business, it's most likely better to focus on building up a single domain.
You can always use the keywords in the filename:

It wouldn't help your domain authority - It would hurt it quite a lot. That's because all of your work is going to be split up, and none of your domains will share in each other's success. You will have to do four times the work to build your domain authority. I would strongly recommend against doing this.
Having that many domains is just setting yourselves up for confused customers (who get onto one domain for your business but can't find what they were looking for), CMS headaches as you bounce between sites, and there are no practical benefits to doing so.

Assuming our domain authority wasn't impressive. Would tailoring 4 websites towards each specific service actually allow us to increase our domain authority? Essentially allowing our content to be much more specific on each domain? Or would it still be better to keep everything under one umbrella in your opinion?

A massive part of SEO if getting domain authority, this is what you would split by having different sites...everything would get diluted.

We changed our domain, I used the move tool in Google Search Console and I am having our site redirected and go daddy, and now I spoke with someone who suggest we do a 301 redirect for all pages on our site and I’m not sure that’s the correct move.
We just changed our domain name after 15 years. when I bought the new domain name I called Go Daddy and they instructed me to contact my google G sweet admin account and change all of our emails over which I did and then I went into Shopify who is my host and changed my primary domain there and then I went back to Go Daddy and had my old website forwarded to my new site. since then there has been nothing but problems with Google. my product feed from my merchant center account has been suspended three or four times now, I tried to rename and move all of my Google accounts from my old domain to my new one, but I am not an SEO person... after making the changes I have started google chats with analytics department with the merchant center with Google as they all keep saying that it looks fine but I’m not convinced because the product feed keeps getting disapproved. So I posted an ad for help and the Guy I spoke with suggested I do a 301 redirect for every single page on my old site, But I’m concerned that might confuse things further? I’ve already started the move in Google Search console And in Shopify I added the old domain back into the domains section and am having it redirectEd that way too... I guess I’m just looking to know which way I should proceed, any and all advice is warmly welcome thank you in advance Maureen

Figuring out why sales drop significantly from one day to another
Hi all, We're running an eCommerce site and are using Moz to track our organic results i primarily we are using the Rank tracker and On page analysis tools. One strange issue that we experience on our website is sales dropping from one day to the next unexplainably (to us anyway). For example, one day (could be any day of the week or weekend) we'll make £1,000 of sales, the next £200 - the following might be back up to £1,000. I've tried looking for patterns in traffic, but oddly even on the days when we have poor sales we still tend to have almost as much traffic. We also use adwords, which account for about 50% of sales - on some of the poor days our spend on adwords is down, on others it's not. If the spend is down I could make a fair assumption that our competitors are playing around with their bids. I'm interesting in trying to determine why we have such irregular sales patterns. If they dropped 10/20% I could quite easily put it down to any number of factors - even the weather for example, however drops of 80/90% seem strange. I don't really know where to look for the answers - my first thought was that on the poor days I should check whether our organic rankings had dropped significantly overnight - but the Moz Rank Tracker only updates once per week, so perhaps there is an alternative way someone could suggest? I'd be really interested to hear from any of you that might have been through similar struggles, or, have some ideas that might help us get to the bottom of the fluctuation in sales. Microsites vs. one site
My client has created a product that he wants to market to two, very different, audiences. The goal is to funnel them through the site and get them to purchase. My question is about the best SEO strategy on how to do this effectively. Since they are distinct audiences with little in common we've recommended building two microsites, and optimizing each with unique content and different keyword focus. I realize it will be harder to optimize two sites rather than one, but it seems to make sense from a user perspective. But once the users goes to a "non-audience specific" page, like any page that is about the product or company and not about the audience, should we build yet a third website that houses the "company/product pages" and channel the conversions there in order to avoid having duplicate content on the two other sites? Or should we put the same "company pages" on both the Audience A and Audience B websites, only vary the text so it doesn't look like duplicate content. Or is the microsite strategy flawed all together? Please keep in mind this is a brand new product and it has national scope. There is no local focus. We will be building their rankings entirely from scratch. I REALLY appreciate any insights you may have. We have been going around and around about this. Thanks

Landing page on a separate domain?
I want to start a PPC campaign for an ecommerce site, but my ads are rejected due to my URL being offensive. The name works great from a branding perspective, but it has kept me from being listed in certain directories and advertisements. I thought about buying a separate domain to host the landing pages for the PPC campaign where the user would then be redirected to my product page for purchasing. Is this a good idea? Would you recommend another approach?

Sales pages or one site?
New client in the pensions market and they want to launch a new product. There are They have asked for a site build but my question is Is there a benefit to writing unique copy for this one product on each micro site/sales page and focus on a particular keyword, with an email capture for lead generation and also a link back to the main site. Buy domains with targeted keywords in them : www.workplacepensions.co.uk www.auto-opt-in-pensions.co.uk etc? Thoughts please as it will change my proposal 😉

Is it possible to set a Goal conversion tracking from a subdomain to a root domain?
Hi Mozzers, Here is an issue I am going through: I have a root domain(www.example.com) that is the core website where you are able to schedule a service I have a subdomain (sub.example.om) that is part of content strategy offering free tips and follows a different branding strategy. There are internal links from sub to root domain I have a GA subdomain tracking code installed on every page for both domains I would love to set goal tracking on GA for visitors coming to my subdomain, then going to root domain and then schedule a sevices? Is this possible? If it is, can someone show me a How To because I tried it anddidn't work? Thanks mozzers!

14,000+ links a to one site - is this a problem?
First, thanks to those who have helped me before. Second, according to Google Webmaster there are about 14,765 external links to my site. According to Open Site Explorer I have 22. So a couple of questions: 1. Why such a discrepancy? 2. Of the 14,765 links shown in Google Webmaster 14,665 are all from one place and all link to my home page. The site is interiordesignproductfinder.com. In August of this year I bought a sponsorship there. There are several of these sponsors so which show up on a rotating basis. Will having 14,765 links all of a sudden showing up be grounds for some type of a Google downgrade? Why are there 14, 765 links instead of just one. Is a new link created every time our sponsorship rotates to the page? Another thing, in the past couple of months our conversions have dropped significantly. we average about 180 visits a day with a 50% bounce rate.
