What is the best way to optimize a page for a magazine
-
Hi i have a serious problem with a website that i am building http://www.cheapflightsgatwick.com/ with reference to letting the search engines know what the magazine is about.
I am building a holiday magazine which will focus on holiday news, cheap deals and holiday reviews.
I am wanting the home page to feature for the following keywords
holiday news, holiday magazine, holiday ideas, best holiday deals,
but the problem i have is, i have tried putting an introduction on the home page but it looks out of place, so what is the best way for me to let google know about what the site is about and to get it ranking well in the search engines
any help and advice would be great

I have left a space between the logo and the main page, would this be a good place to write an introduction, maybe a paragraph to the site and maybe write a paragraph there or each section so when you go to a different menu section on the site, have the info there.
or should i have it somewhere else on the site. at the moment i have no introduction on the site for the search engines to understand what the site is about

Thanks Diane,
I would suggest the following: Use your Holiday News page as just that. Put 10 times more Holiday related news, etc. than you do anything with travel. Yes, you can have a couple of links to deals, etc. but really be laser like in your focus on Holiday News, etc.
The minute you start adding cruise reviews, hotel reviews, travel advice, etc. you are going to be a travel site no matter how many times you say holiday. Make this page be about Holiday news, etc. Stay away from the standard travel site format you have if at all possible.
This will help you rank for Holiday news, etc and likely have a higher chance at converting visitors into purchasers.

robert this is amazing stuff thank you. i have always thought that when it comes to H1 that you should just use one or two words, so straight away i have learnt something thank you.
can you give me an example of the three sentences please and where on my home page would you put it.
the site is as you say about holiday news, it is about news from travel agents, airline news, it is also going to display honest holiday reviews, and also cheap holiday deals that we have come across.
these are also the areas we will be covering
cruise reviews, cruise news and deals, hotel reviews abroad and in the UK, travel advice, sun and sea holidays, low cost holiday news, cheap flights news.
many thanks for your help

I will assume you have done your keyword analysis and that the four keywords here are the best of the best for your purposes. If this is correct, then
Your order based on what you wrote would seem to be - The site is a Magazine. It will provide three things: News, Ideas, and Products at good prices. You want the world to know this all by virtue of your home page -
I would start with Title Tag = Holiday News, Holiday Ideas, Holiday Deals | The Holiday Magazine (I am naming it The Holiday Magazine here)
My H1 would be along the lines of The Best Holiday Magazine for News, Party Ideas, and Unannounced Holiday Deals
I would then have a two to three sentence "why" statement with an ordered list of these three News, Ideas, Products with an example and a link (eg. an outbound link to a great or recent travel deal - if you point out one from this Christmas - "Travel Deal Ghost from Christmas Past...2011" - that no one could believe, it would lead people to associate you with that great deal - It must be great and even clever) I would bold or italicize each item on ordered list: Holiday News, Holiday Deals, etc.
I would make sure to use good descriptions in alt text of up to about 140 - 150 characters. (Do not keyword stuff)
I would have a meta description that got people to click through.
I would find several holiday links to acquire and I would link to holiday sites, wiki on Christmas, etc. from your home page (two links).
So there is the quick and dirty. Make sure you remember me at Christmas if this works out for you
Edit: Diane, when I wrote this I had not gone to the link to your site (my bad). Your home page is not a Holiday Magazine as it stands now It is a whole lot of content on cheap travel. When I go to the Holiday page, it is better, but if you are just going to fill it with a ton of travel offers, etc. I do not see how you will rank for Holiday News even with the best structure.

How do I best optimize my on-page SEO for a magazine-style wordpress theme?
My Wordpress website is set up with a magazine style theme (Newspaper). Maybe that's the issue overall here. Questions: 1) Pages vs Categories vs Posts I currently have a category with a few dozen posts under it. The category page itself has a ~1000 word article on it. It paginates every 10 posts or so at the bottom, but most of the page is duplicate because it's only swapping out a few links. Should I instead make the "category" a page with the posts childed under it? What's the best way to go about that? 2) Canonical and Pagination I get errors about a ton of duplicate content for paginated categories and my author page (all posts are under the admin account, which has ~40 pages or so. Every page is just a list of posts and it bitches about duplicate Titles and Descriptions on every one of the paginated posts). Should I canonical these back to the root author? Same question regarding pagination for categories, assuming I'm not going to be switching them to Pages. 3) Home Page Links Right now my home page just shows a few links to the top posts of all time. After that, it shows the 5 newest posts. On the sidebar it lists a few random pages/posts. There are also a few "category listings" which just shows random posts relevant to that category. Do I want something more static/structured? The navbar does list most main content pages under their appropriate category, but the home page itself is pretty much dynamic.

Redirection loop. Best way to resolve...
Hi Guys Got a warning on a crawl today "Your page is redirecting to a page that is redirecting to a page that is redirecting to a page... and so on." In GWMT it is set to www. and also back-end in my server. I also have an SSL deployed and in my htaccess the rule is added to ensure all pages got to SSL. Any of you guys have advice regarding the best route to go or should I "IGNORE" this warning as all other aspects are clocking 95%+? Thanks in advance Daren

Joomla creating duplicate pages, then the duplicate page's canonical points to itself - help!
Using Joomla, every time I create an article a subsequent duplicate page is create, such as: /latest-news/218-image-stabilization-task-used-to-develop-robot-brain-interface and /component/content/article?id=218:image-stabilization-task-used-to-develop-robot-brain-interface The latter being the duplicate. This wouldn't be too much of a problem, but the canonical tag on the duplicate is pointing to itself.. creating mayhem in Moz and Webmaster tools. We have hundreds of duplicates across our website and I'm very concerned with the impact this is having on our SEO! I've tried plugins such as sh404SEF and Styleware extensions, however to no avail. Can anyone help or know of any plugins to fix the canonicals?

I know I'm missing pages with my page level 301 re-directs. What can I do?
I am implementing page level re-directs for a large site but I know that I will inevitably miss some pages. Is there an additional safety net root level re-direct that I can use to catch these pages and send them to the homepage?

What is the best URL designed for a product page?
Should a product page URL include the category name and subcategory name in it? Most ecommerce platforms it seems are designed to do have the category and sub-category names included in the URL followed by the product name. If that is the case and the same product is listed in more then 1 category and sub-category then will that product have 2 unique urls and as a result be treated as 2 different product pages by google? And then since it is the same product in two places on the site won't google treat those 2 pages as having duplicate content? SO is it best to not have the category and sub-category names in the URL of a product page? And lastly, is there a preferred character limit for a URL to be less than in size? Thanks!

Best practice: unique meta descriptions on blog 'tag' pages
Hi everyone, I'm curious, are there best practices for introducing unique meta descriptions on blog tag pages (I'm using wordpress)? For instance, using platinum seo, on an original post, the meta description is either the excerpt or a specified custom sentence. It doesn't appear that platinum seo allows for custom descriptions on tag pages. Love to hear your thoughts. Thanks! Peter

What's the best format for a e-commerce URL product page
We have over 2000 non branded experiences and activities sold through our website. The website is having a face lift with the a new look and a stronger focus on SEO. As part of this, I am keen to establish what the best practice is for product based URLs. I've researched the market and come up with a few alternatives that are used: domain/category/subcategory/activity_name domain/activity_name/category/subcategory/activity_reference domain/generic_term/activity_reference/activity_name domain/category/activity_location/activity_name Activities are location based but the location can change (say once every 2 years). Activity names, category, subcategory and activity_reference rarely change. Are there any thoughts/ research on the best method? (If there is one) Many thanks in advance for your insights.
