Search engine friendly URLs
-
I'm going to create some new content for my site, I'm trying to decide on the best search engine friendly format. Namely, is it ok to use a subdirectory or should I keep all content on root level?
Is the SEO effect of either of these URLs superior to the other?

I like this analysis and recommendation.
The only other thing I would say (if it's a page) is drop the trailing slash on the recommended URL to this:
domain.com/cooking/lasagnaThat makes it clear it's a page as opposed to a directory, and it also looks cleaner to the human eye.
Here's some more complete discussion on the trailing slash topic:

Hi Limens,
It is certainly fine to use a subdirectory, and can really make sense to help organize your content. It's also helpful in your analytics if you want to see who went to the blog area of your site versus the product area of your site.
It would help to know a little more about your site, but I would choose neither of the above. I'd actually go with something like domain.com/cooking/lasagna/. Note that I'm not including the .php. If you later switch to a different language, you won't have to redirect from php to asp or html, etc.
I wouldn't stuff your subfolder in your URL with keywords like the tasty-food in your example below. It just makes your URL longer and look a little more spammy to the human eye.

The second one is the best, because sort URLs are more relevant than long ones, but the best practices are http://www.seomoz.org/learn-seo/url
Use - instead of _ to separate keywords
-
this is what the length of URL would be in reality:
www.domaindom.com/cooking-tasty-food/lasagna_with_cheese.php
but if there is a good SEO reason, I could just put it on the root:
-
If your URLs are sort, the best way is to use domain.com/cooking/lasagna.php, this is the best way to optimize for lasagna and target secondary keywords cooking related.
Bye.

How to best handle search landing pages - that don't exist
I have quite a bit of blog information that can be searched, which results in "pages" that don't actually live anywhere. These are scanned by Moz and appear as poor page quality for speed, etc. How do I get the service to either ignore all of these or is there a way to treat them as a real page with content? As there are quite a few generated over time, I'd like to be able to capture them somehow. Thanks.

Changing url (permalink) structure of website??
Currently I'm working on SEO of one website www.mocomi.com. I want to change url (permalink) structure of entire website which has more than 5000 pages. Currently website have structure of http://mocomi.com/tenali-raman-the-kings-condition/ Which I want to change it to http://mocomi.com/fun/stories/tenali-raman/tenali-raman-the-kings-condition/ Likewise I want to change entire website permalink url structure to make site architecture more SEO friendly. Which means I'am going to add only categories & subcategories before actual link. Kindly guide with following questions which I need to move forward with this step. How much is it worth to change URL structure? Checklist or factors I need to consider while making this decision? Is it a good practice to change URL's of entire website at once or Should I change it in Parts? How much time it takes google to rank those urls again? Which are the best practices to do so?

Your tactics on improving organic search for a site in a struggling industry
We work with a client of ours with organic search initiatives. The problem is: the industry (e.g. the core of the business) is sagging. It has been for a couple of years. And they're finally feeling these sagging losses. Google Trends support this and shows it quite nicely. It pretty much mirrors organic search referrals as well. The industry (e.g. the core phrase that the company and its competitors have historically hit very hard) as well as Google Trends for the client (middle of the pack) and their two big competitors are attached. Wondering if anyone else has had this type of circumstance with their clients and some of their go to tactics that helped them stop the skid (and even make it start going up). URL structure
Hello all, I am about to sort out my websites link structure, and was wondering which approach to our services page would be best. should we have: services/digital-marketing & services/website-design etc or: digital-marketing/website-design & digital-marketing/seo Basically I see digital marketing as the top level category that is the umbrella term for all of our digital services. But would it make more sense to have service to be the main category and digital marketing within that (along with all the other services from web design to seo)? all thoughts welcome!

Missing new pages in Search
Hi, We are on wordpress platform with category permalink structure site.com/category/categoryname. To pull in more SEO traffic, we created pages with structure site.com/categorynameand pulled in all the content from category pages to these new pages followed by applying no-follow on category pages within robots.txt. While it has been a week we applied these changes, we still see old category pages on google search with weird description ( A description for this result is not available because of this site's robots.txt... ) How could we make search results to replace old categories links with the new pages? thanks in advance

Adding keywords to URL's
I understand the importance of having the keyword in the URL (at least now I do). When I created my site (www.enchantingquotes.com), I was completely ignorant about SEO. So....question is...how do I go about adding keywords to already done pages? Do I create a new section and then redirect - or do I have to basically recreate pages? Thx much 🙂
