SEOMoz Crawl Diagnostic indicates duplicate page content for home page?
-
My first SEOMoz Crawl Diagnostic report for my website indicates duplicate page content for my home page. It lists the home page URL Page Title and URL twice.
How do I go about diagnosing this?
Is the problem related to the following code that is in my .htaccess file? (The purpose of the code was to redirect any non "www" backlink referrals to the "www" version of the domain.)
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^whatever.com [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.whatever.com/$1 [L,R=301]Should I get rid of the "http" reference in the second line?
Related to this is a notice in the "Crawl Notices Found" -- "301 Permanent redirect" which shows my home page title as "http://whatever.com" and shows the redirect address as http://http://www.whatever.com/
I'm guessing this problem is again related to the redirect code I'm using.
Also...
The report indicates duplicate content for those links that have different parameters added to the URL i.e. http://www.whatever.com?marker=Blah Blah&markerzoom=13
If I set up a canonical reference for the page, will this fix this?
Thank you.

I contacted the help desk as instructed an was told:
"I took a look at the campaign and it looks like our crawler can't parse the 301 redirect you have in place on the main page. The reason for this is the redirect in place, adds two https when rogerbot tries to crawl through it. Roger can’t parse the redirect as is, but it can identify it (as it did in your notice’s report on the crawl diagnostics page). This isn't a problem for browsers since they are made to ignore redirects of this nature. Crawlers on the other hand have a strict code to follow and can't follow redirects like that. When I load up your site [mywebsite.com] right now, it redirects to www.[mywebsite].com. Try creating a new campaign under the domain you are redirecting to, this should clear any issues up."
And so I did that and it looks like that worked after the new crawl, however I then set up another campaign for another website I manage being sure to use the "www" in front of the domain and got the same problem again -- the home page appears twice as duplicate content.
So I'm back to asking my primary question again: What is the definitive redirect code to use to convert a non "www" request to a "www" request? The same redirect code mentioned in my first post is being used on all of my sites.

Hi Perry,
In your browser, are you seeing things redirect to the double http? I think there's a bug in the crawl tools that's causing some false errors right now. Before you go work on the redirect file, could you send an email to help@seomoz.org to first make sure we're not the ones that messed up?
Thanks!

Duplicate Content - Different URLs and Content on each
Seeing a lot of duplicate content instances of seemingly unrelated pages. For instance, http://www.rushimprint.com/custom-bluetooth-speakers.html?from=topnav3 is being tracked as a duplicate of http://www.rushimprint.com/custom-planners-diaries.html?resultsperpg=viewall. Does anyone else see this issue? Is there a solution anyone is aware of?

Why are my 301 redirects and duplicate pages (with canonicals) still showing up as duplicates in Webmaster Tools?
My guess is that in time Google will realize that my duplicate content is not actually duplicate content, but in the meantime I'd like to get your guys feedback. The reporting in Webmaster Tools looks something like this. Duplicates /url1.html /url2.html /url3.html /category/product/url.html /category2/product/url.html url3.html is the true canonical page in the list above._ url1.html,_ and url2.html are old URLs that 301 to url3.html. So, it seems my bases are covered there. _/category/product/url.html _and _/category2/product/url.html _ do not redirect. They are the same page as url3.html. Each of the category URLs has a canonical URL of url3.html in the header. So, it seems my bases are covered there as well. Can I expect Google to pick up on this? Why wouldn't it understand this already?

Is this duplicate content when there is a link back to the original content?
Hello, My question is: Is it duplicate content when there is a link back to the original content? For example, here is the original page: http://www.saugstrup.org/en-ny-content-marketing-case-infografik/. But that same content can be found here: http://www.kommunikationsforum.dk/anders-saugstrup/blog/en-ny-content-marketing-case-til-dig, but there is a link back to the original content. Is it still duplicate content? Thanks in advance.

Pages with content defined by querystring
I have a page that show traveltips: http://www.spies.dk/spanien/alcudia/rejsemalstips-liste This page shows all traveltips for Alcudia. Each traveltip also has its own url: http://www.spies.dk/spanien/alcudia/rejsemalstips?TravelTipsId=19767 ( 2 weeks ago i noticed the url http://www.spies.dk/spanien/alcudia/rejsemalstips show up in google webmaster tools as a 404 page, along with 100 of others urls to the subpage /rejsemalstips WITHOUT a querystring. With no querystring there is no content on the page and it goes 404. I need my technicians to redirect that page so it shows the list, but in the meantime i would like to block it in robots.txt But how do i block a page if it is called without a querystring?

301 lots of old pages to home page
Will it hurt me if i redirect a few hundred old pages to my home page? I currently have a mess on my hands with many 404's showing up after moving my site to a new ecommerce server. We have been at the new server for 2 years but still have 337 404s showing up in google webmaster tools. I don't think it would affect users as very few people woudl find those old links but I don't want to mess with google. Also, how much are those 404s hurting my rank?
