Organic Search dropped 50% Wednesday and has not recovered
-
I've included two charts below. 1. Our organic search results for the last year and, 2. Results for the last 6 weeks.
We were up to about 350 visits per day in June 2011. In late june we added affiliate links to our site and took a hit down to about 120 a day.
At the end of august we moved the affiliate links behind a login. Only registered users saw them. And we started moving back up.
Last week January 8-14 we were averaging about 550 per day.
Then this Wednesday we dropped to 287. Thursday 268. And today is under 100.
We have not updated our website at all. No changes.
Does anyone have any idea what might have caused this plunge. Has anyone else seen their traffic drop in half.
Thanks for your help.

Looks a bit like panda too, that sharp drop. How is your content? thin, duplicated, templated, non-unique?
edit: you didnt do anything but you did move affiliate links behind logins? Better go double check you didnt screw something else up unintentionally when doing that
What does you IIS/Xenu crawl say?

I bet its becuase you have ads above the fold.
Quite a few websites got hit becuase of this, and I setup two websites a few months back one with ads below content and one with above. the one above the fold got stuck down!

I agree with Kieran. Don't panic over one day change, but do check your bandwidth usage, in case there was a problem at your ISP you are not aware of. Also, check your analytics or logs. There may be a deadspot due to connectivity. Did you update any software? add or change a plugin? Do you have ads or other external javascript from other sites that may have hung your pages and stopped visitors coming?

Hi James
A big drop in a few days indeed but it might just be a temporary thing. I would give it a few more days and see if ti continues then send on a link and maybe we can help you dig. have your rankings dropped as significantly?
-
Do you have a lot of ads above the fold? Google released a new update yesterday and you may be in the 1%.

Hi James,
Couple of questions which might help us..
What does your backlink profile look like?
You mentioned you havent updated your website. When was the last website update? And how often do you add new content?

Googles Search Intent – Plural & Singular KW’s
This is more of a ‘gripe’ than a question, but I would love to hear people’s views. Typically, when you search for a product using the singular and plural versions of the keyword Google delivers different SERPs. As an example, ‘leather handbag’ and ‘leather handbags’ return different results, but surely the search intent is exactly the same? You’d have thought Google was now clever enough to work this out. We tend to optimise our webpages for both the plural and singular variations of the KW’s, but see a mixed bag of results when analysing rankings. Is Google trying to force us to create a unique webpage for the singular version, and another unique webpage for the plural version? This would confuse the visitor, and make no sense.. the search intent is the same! How do you combat this problem? Many thanks in advance. Lee.

SERP Drop
Hi, I have been trading online since 2006 and over the years I have built up some impressive SERP's for keywords such as "mens underwear' which I was SERP 1 for. However, over the past 6 months I have pretty much dropped off the face of Google for a large proportion of my keywords. I suspect I have been hit by the Panda/Penguin updates and do not know how to recover this. I have a mixture of what I consider to be relevant and healthy links, but there are also a few links in there that Google would no longer like. However, I believe that the majority of my links are OK. What should I do? Thanks i97zo6W.jpg

Did anyone else notice a DA Drop this week?
I have our site + 4 other competitors' sites in my SEOmoz campaigns and all of the DA's dropped by 1 or 2 points. Has anyone else noticed a drop this week? Two months ago, all of these websites also went down 1 or 2 DA points, then some of them came back up a point the next month. What's going on? Thanks

[G Penalty?] Significant Traffic Drop From All Sources
My client's traffic started to significantly decrease around Nov 21 (Panda update 22). This includes traffic from all sources - search engines (G, B, & Y!), direct, AND referral. At first we thought it was a G penalty but G answered our reconsideration request by stating that no manual penalty had occured. It could be algo penalty, but again, the site has been hit across all sources. Client has done zero backlinking - it is all natural. No Spam, etc.. All of his on-site SEO is perfect (700+ pages indexed, all unique content, unique title and desc). On Oct 16, he switched from his old URL to a new URL and did proper redirects. (Last year - Dec 2011 - he switched his CMS to Drupal and although there was a temporary decrease in traffic, it showed recovery within a month or so.) He does zero social on his site and he has many ads above the fold. Nevertheless, the traffic decrease is not source specific. In other words, all sources have decreased since Nov 21, 2012 and have not recovered. What is going on? What can be the explanation for decrease in traffic across all sources? This would be easy to answer if it was only Google Organic decrease but since direct and referral have also been hit, we cannot locate the problem. Please share your personal experiences as well as advice on where we should look. Could this be negative SEO? Where would we look? ANY ADVICE IS WELCOME !!!! Every bit counts Thanks!!

Do Google donations to Wikimedia show any bias in search results?
Over the weekend we learned Google co-founder Sergey Brin donated $500,000 to Wikimedia, the parent company of Wikipedia.com. Last year I believe Google donated $2 million to Wikimedia. I now ask, is this suspicious in anyway, seeing that Wikipedia ranks so well in Google for so many terms? There are several blog posts about it online here and there throughout the years, but what does everyone think?

Has anyone recovered from Panda?
My two websites were unaffected by the original and 2.0 panda updates, but istring in June my traffic has been down around 30%. In analyzing it appears that my long tail searches have been greatly impacted. So it looks like I am a victim of the mighty panda. My main site, www.uncontesteddivorce-nyc.com is in my opinion a decent looking site, with unique content and no ads, etc., but for whatever reason it has been negatively affected. There might be some duplication of content between certain pages and also my links are all or practically all directory links, though a lot are pretty heavy duty directories. I see a lot of stuff written giving advice on how to recover from Panda. Has anyone actually done so? How did you do it? thx Paul
