New web design targeting UK & France
-
Hi I have a couple of topics I would like to clarify.
My existing website is on .ie & we are now expanding into France & UK
We have decided to take the route of
example.com with subfolders for example.com/ie example.com/uk & example.com/fr
just like thishttp://app.wistia.com/stats/278112 provided by SEOmoz
-
Should we 301 redirect our existing .ie site to the .com or the .com/ie?
-
When building links should links be built to .com or each .com .com/fr etc
Also are there any good resources out there about International SEO?
Thank you

Excellent question Socialdude.
So, First we tackle 301 from example.ie to example.com or example.com/ie. My first inclination is to do the redirect to the .com/ie due to the likelihood of url to url content being more similar. The argument could be that since .com is domain you should redirect to root domain as opposed to sub directory. I am still inclined to go to .com/ie as I believe this will still ultimately impact the root domain.
Next, since you will want pages to rank in respective SE's in each country, I would want links going to sub directories as much as possible. So, to improve fr, I need links to fr pages, etc.
I look forward to others opinions on this.

Correct Hreflang & Canonical Tags for Multi-Regional Website English Language Only having URL Parameters
Dear friends, We have a multi-regional website in English language only having the country selector on the top of each page and it adds countrycode parameters on each url. Website is built in Magento 1.8 and having 1 store with multiple store views. There is no default store set in Magento as I discussed with developer. Content is same for all the countries and only currency is changed. In navigation there are urls without url parameters but when we change store from any page it add parameters in the url for same page hence there are total 7 URLs. 6 URLs for each page (with country parameters) and 1 master url (without parameters) and making content duplicity. We have implemented hreflang tags on each page with url parameters but for canonical we have implemented master page url as per navigation without url parameters Example on this page. I think this is correct for master page but we should use URL parameters in canonical tags for each counry url too and there should be only 1 canonical tag on each country page url. Currently all the country urls are having master page canoncial tag as per the example. Please correct me if I am wrong and **in this case what has to be done for master page? **as google is indexing the pages without parameters too. We are also using GEOIP redirection for each store with country IP detection and for rest of the countries which are not listed on the website we are redirecting to USA store. Earlier it was 301 but we changed it to 302. Hreflang tags are showing errors in SEMRush due to redirection but in GWT it's OK for some pages it's showing no return tags only. Should I use **x-default tags for hreflang and country selector only on home page like this or should I remove the redirection? **However some of the website like this using redirection but header check tool doesn't show the redirection for this and for our website it shows 302 redirection. Sorry for the long post but looking for your support, please.

Linking .com and .co.uk
My client has an online ecommerce store which he is due to launch later this week. He owns both the .co.uk and the .com  - the site is hosted on .co.uk and the .com domain redirects to the .co.uk The client wants anyone who visits the site from the .com to see permalinks when later going through the site as .com as opposed to .co.uk permalinks. Is this possible/any suggestions? Thank you!

UK English and USA English - two flags on navigation?
If a website is translated to English and has .co.uk version and a .com which are directed at UK and USA audiences respectively (using localised spellings etc), how do you get the visitor to the right version? It seems clumsy to add two flags on the navigation - one for USA and one for GB English as well as other languages. Should a redirection script be in place based on their IP address? Thanks for any help

New gTLDs
We have seen that there are a lot of new gTLDs coming available. Does Moz have any insight on how the various search engines are going to treat them. Will they be a backwater of the internet or are some of them likely to become relevant and used by major companies. Â If we were to simultaneously set up new sites based around a .com domain and say a .shop domain, would they both grow equally?

International Sites - Sitemaps, Robots & Geolocating in WMT
Hi Guys, I have a site that has now been launched in the US having originally just been UK. In order to accommodate this, the website has been set-up using directories for each country. Example: domain.com/en-gb domain.com/en-us As the site was originally set-up for UK, the sitemap, robots file & Webmaster Tools account were added to the main domain. Example: domain.com/sitemap.xml domain.com/robots.txt The question is does this now need changing to make it specific for each country. Example: The sitemap and robots.txt for the UK would move to: domain.com/en-gb/sitemap.xml domain.com/en-gb/robots.txt and the US would have its own separate sitemap and robots.txt. Example : domain.com/en-us/sitemap.xml domain.com/en-us/robots.txt Also in order to Geolocate this in WMT would this need to be done for each directory version instead of the main domain? Currently the WMT account for the UK site is verified at www.domain.com, would this need reverifying at domain.com/en-gb? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Why would a site lose rankings in U.S while maintaining rankings in other English locations (Canada & Australia)
What would cause a site to lose ranking in the U.S while maintaining top (1st page) positions in other English results countries such as Canada or Australia? Â Is this purely penguin related because of location of backlinks or are there other significant factors that could be in play? Would this rule out Panda as a cause because it's simply an "English language" targeted algo and not location dependent like backlinks (penguin)? Appreciate any insights

Analytics Profile for '.co.uk' extension
What's up Mozzers, I am currently doing some work for a local business in the UK and they've asked me to set-up Google Analytics and Webmaster Tools profiles for them. The site is currently accessible at the following domain extension, 'mydomain.com' and 'mydomain.co.uk'. What is the best way to set this up in Google Analytics and Google Webmaster Tools so I get the most accurate measurement of traffic coming to my website?
