New Site Search Critique
-
Hi
I am a huge fan of the SEOMOZ site and this great community which has helped me learn the current SEO skills I have now which are still very basic compared to the pros on the forum.
I have tried to follow best practice regarding onsite and technical seo when developing my new site www.cheapfindergames.com and I would really appreciate it if experts on the forum could spare a minute to critique the site from a search perspective please
This will give any elements of what onsite and technical SEO I done well and what aspects still need work.
I am currently trying to build quality links and social mentions into the site which will take time, and the site has been designed around usability and conversions.
Many Thanks
Ian

Re: item 3, no damage
Re: item 7 - I did share a suggestion. I prefer to use the home page to target the site's brand. I use inner pages which are 1-click from the home page to target the site's main keywords. Your site can target 100s of keywords so unless one particular keywords is highly dominate over the others, this approach is my preference.
Re: item 10 - no. The W3C is the governing body for HTML/CSS code. I was referring to using their validator tool to ensure the code used on your site is valid.
Re: sitemaps, there are numerous software apps available to create a sitemap. Find one you like and set a CRON job to run as needed to generate a new sitemap.

Hi Ryan
Thanks for the great feedback. Coming back to some of your points
1.) How can I resolve this in the .htaccess file - what script is required so that it points to http://www.cheapfindergames.com therefore reducing canonical urls.
3.) Would this cause any damage if it is left as it is?
7.) Any suggestions on what you feel would work? Perhaps
Video Games Price Comparison - Cheapfindergames.com ?
10.) Do you mean putting javascript and css in external files rather than inline?
+ What would you recommend to create an XML sitemap, as the site is a dynamic site which changes throughout the day

Hi Ian,
As you requested I have taken a look at your site and would share some initial items which can be improved from a SEO perspective:
1. You have duplicated pages. You shared your home page URL as http://www.cheapfindergames.com. If you select your logo in the upper-right corner of your page, it shows the URL as http://www.cheapfindergames.com/index.php. Both URLs load which is an SEO issue. Note: the HOME link in your footer has the same issue.
2. Your site lacks a 404 page. Provide a helpful 404 page with your site's navigation and search box.
3. Your robots.txt page blocks the /retailer.php page which is unnecessary since you have a redirect in place.
4. Drop the technology extension from your URLs. For example your "About" page URL is http://www.cheapfindergames.com/aboutus.php. It is not helpful to users nor search engines to know it is a "php" page. Additionally the technology may change in the future causing unnecessary redirects. Try the following URL instead: http://www.cheapfindergames.com/aboutus
5. Organize your social engagement. You have a large facebook block, a tiny twitter widget and then over off to the side is your G+ block. Try offering a single clean block for all your social sites.
6. Your home page text block has grammar issues "...from the major uk retailers to bring you’re the best price and deal."
7. As Kieran shared, the title should be adjusted. It's often best for your home page to focus your brand "Cheap Finder Games" and allow an inner page focus each of the many keywords you wish to target. If you decide otherwise, pick one keyword focus for your page.
8. Your mailing list seems to be the primary means for you to keep in contact with visitors. You may want to offer a clearer Call To Action for signup.
9. Your meta description is too long and a bit unfocused.
10. You can do a bit of code clean up and allow your code to validate.
These tips will hopefully give you some initial direction with your site. Best of luck.

Thanks Kieran I understand now
Totally agree and every day I try and improve it, I was just looking for additional insight into perhaps things i might have missed that would have an affect on rankings.

In the footer of the page you have 3 links to these loactions but the links are just to the existing page.
Also when you say you have 99% covered the fact of the matter is that you never have everything covered and for a nice like yours I would spend time every day looking at my content working on various aspects, checking my keywords, and a host of other items.

Thanks yes the keywords are xbox 360, PS3, computer games, Wii and then the long tail keyphrase would be the likes of Best Price of Fifa 12 Xbox 360 which I cover in the details page
http://www.cheapfindergames.com/games-fifa-12-xbox-360/B005A2BDZY
- you mention " Wii/ PS3 / Xbox links are only directed to the home page" could you explain what you mean by this please?
ALSO if any other experts can locate anything I have missed with regard to onsite and technical SEO it would be great to know, or have I covered the 99% of what's required.

From a conversions point of view I do not think the landing page encourages immediate action for people arriving there.
Your Title tag
Compare Prices – Best deals offers on computer games for PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, PC | Cheapfindergames
looks a bit wordy and I am not sure if it is focused on your keywords (which you don't mention but I assume are games.
Plus as an FYI our Wii/ PS3 / Xbox links are only directed to the home page at the moment so might be worth correcting (actually I wouldn't have them twice on the page

Building new site on new web host with concerns
Hello, I have a domain with GoDaddy and current site is hosted there as well. I want to leave my domain with GoDaddy and build a brand new site on HostGator. The current website was designed to get us started. Not any significant traffic, backlinks, or SEO. The domain is not really what I want. There are 80 pages including those that are no longer in service. The keywords are not as relevant today. Current site domain is whiterocktech.net The new site will be very much different with SEO leading the way. We have designed it yet have not opened an account yet with HostGator. In addition, we have found a shorter more appropriate domain name. Not ideal but easy to type in yet it has a dash. This site is wr-crm.com. Questions: Does it make sense to "cut bait" from the current site given the lack use? Does it make sense to build the site and still set redirects from the old domain pages to a new one? Given so little traffic, is there really an effect on SEO if we sunset the old domain? Could I strip out the old domain website and just post a message on one page to come to our new site until old domain expires? I appreciate any insights on helping me with this decision. Mike

Moving site from html to Wordpress site: Should I port all old pages and redirect?
Any help would be appreciated. I am porting an old legacy .html site, which has about 500,000 visitors/month and over 10,000 pages to a new custom Wordpress site with a responsive design (long overdue, of course) that has been written and only needs a few finishing touches, and which includes many database features to generate new pages that did not previously exist. My questions are: Should I bother to port over older pages that are "thin" and have no incoming links, such that reworking them would take time away from the need to port quickly? I will be restructuring the legacy URLs to be lean and clean, so 301 redirects will be necessary. I know that there will be link juice loss, but how long does it usually take for the redirects to "take hold?" I will be moving to https at the same time to avoid yet another porting issue. Many thanks for any advice and opinions as I embark on this massive data entry project.

No related searches
Does anyone have any insight as to why a site wouldn't show any results when using this google search operator:
Technical SEO | | SoulSurfer8
related:site.com There are no results appearing. We recently moved from .com to .org with 301 redirects in place and change of address tool submitted. There are no penalties or warnings in search console but we have seen a significant decrease in search traffic. Thanks in advance.0 -
My site is not being regularly crawled?
My site used to be crawled regularly, but not anymore. My pages aren't showing up in the index months after they've been up. I've added them to the sitemap and everything. I now have to submit them through webmaster tools to get them to index. And then they don't really rank? Before you go spouting off the standard SEO resolutions... Yes, I checked for crawl errors on Google Webmaster and no, there aren't any issues No, the pages are not noindex. These pages are index, follow No, the pages are not canonical No, the robots.txt does not block any of these pages No, there is nothing funky going on in my .htaccess. The pages load fine No, I don't have any URL parameters set What else would be interfereing? Here is one of the URLs that wasn't crawled for over a month: http://www.howlatthemoon.com/locations/location-st-louis

Site dropped after article submissions
I have a site about back pain. The name is lower back pain relief. It has a lot of content on how to treat back pain with natural remedies. I paid for botw.org and yahoo directories as well as submissions from submit edge. My site was doing well within a few months. I was floating around at the bottom of page two for "lower back pain relief" and lower back pain. I found out about Unique article wizard. I started using that to write and submit articles. Now, my website is not ranking anywhere. I submitted a request for reconsideration to Google. They said no manual action had been taken. The question: How long does this penalty last? Is that website toast now? I think it was penalized for using the anchor text too much or adding too many links at once. It has been penalized for about 6 weeks now.

Time on site
From what I understand, if you search for a keyword say "blue widgets" and you click on a result, and then spend 10 seconds there, and go back to google and click on a different result google will track that first result as being not very relevant. What I don't understand is what happens when (and this happens all the time, i did it today) you click on a result go to that page, find it (not?) relevant and then get distracted, phone call, or someone calls you into another room in the office. You end up accidentally leaving the tab open all day long, and never go back to the google search. So your time on site to google is what? infinity? there must be an upper cap here? at some point they must say, ok, the user is gone, time on site = our maximum = 5 minutes?!? Get me? any insight?

Are lots of links from an external site to non-existant pages on my site harmful?
Google Webmaster Tools is reporting a heck of a lot of 404s which are due to an external site linking incorrectly to my site. The site itself has scraped content from elsewhere and has created 100's of malformed URLs. Since it unlikely I will have any joy having these linked removed by the creator of the site, I'd like to know how much damage this could be doing, and if so, is there is anything I can do to minimise the impact? Thanks!
