Search snippet ignors title tag :-(
-
Good Morning from 1 degrees C light drizzle Wetherby UK
Ok here is todays puzzle. When I Google "Great Inns" ( http://www.greatinns.co.uk ) I get a search snippet which looks like this: http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/cc53/zymurgy_bucket/great-inns-title-glitch.jpg
As the screen grab illustrates the Title tag is missing and simply says untitled. So my questions is pleased why is google rendering this when in the source code there is a tag eg: <title>Great Inns of Britain - Home – Independent, Historic Inns, Quality Service Any insights welcome :-)</p></title>

Thank you for all your replies.. The code is getting cleaned up as I type

Actually, this happened to me just today, on google.com itself:
http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/14/picture62u.png/
Got this when searching 'keywordtoolexternal' (because for some reason I don't bookmark stuff like this). Â Something strange is up, have never seen this sort of thing before.
EDIT: Â JohnMu from Google has stated that these issues are more than likely related to robots.txt:

For what it's worth, there's another thread about someone having "untitled" show up in the Google SERPs at http://www.seomoz.org/q/google-is-showing-website-as-untitled.

And, 'mornin from Houston where we don't use no C's with our weather reportin' It's 61 (that's with an F).
Nightwing, you may also want to take a look at your overall on page SEO for the site. Every page has the same title tag, meta description and H1. At least the ones I looked at. A good place for you to start is with the Beginner's guide to SEO here on SEOmoz.
Chapter 4 talks about how to set up a page in terms of these key elements.
The Q&A will help you along as you have questions. Good luck.

Morning from Leeds!
I agree with Paul, it looks as though it might be because <title>is over 3 lines</p> <p> </p> <pre id="line18"><span class="attribute-name"> </span><span class="attribute-value">esheet" </span><span class="error"><span class="attribute-name">/</span></span>><<span class="start-tag">title</span>> Great Inns of Britain - Home – Independent, Historic Inns, Quality Service </<span class="end-tag">title</span>></<span class="end-tag">head</span>></pre></title>

Hi from 1 degree C, overcast (but no drizzle yet) Blackpool,
As Alan says check you GWMT and move your title tag up in the head.
There may be something deeper going on though, I tried searching text from your deeper pages to see if those pages had titles in G serps. But alas I was unable to find the pages in the SERPs after copying and pasting the text. (Some only showed 4 results and yours was not amongst them).
I also Googled a number of your URLs and again I got stumped.
GWMT pronto and see whats occurring!

Not far here (Halifax).
Very strange as to me the code seems ok. It not however on a different line for the title tags, not sure this would help having the <title>start on a new line?</p></title>

Goog afternoon from 38C hot and humid Perth Western Australia
google often replaces your title if it is keywords stuffed, yours is a bit stuffed,
but to be sure, go to GWMT and crawl as googlebot and see what it sees. see if your title is showing.
Your title is at the bottem of the head section, it could be that something above is stoping it making it to your title.
Try moving it up higher
Also i would place my encodeing first after the head tag

Search visibility of website that only uses H2 tags - will not having H1 damage my visibility?
Excuse the basic question. I host my domain and website on Squarespace. I use a specific theme and after doing a site crawl of my site Moz picked up that Pages and Blog posts 'Missing or Invalid H1' tags (450 issues!). I discovered that my Squarespace theme only using H2 tags. Is this a serious issue that affects my search visibility? What would you recommend that I do to fix this, if anything? I'm starting some SEO and lnikbuilding, but wanted to see if this is an issue that I need to consider. Thanks!!!!

Impact of changing title and description.
When a site doesn't rank for keywords, is this advisable to keep changing the title, description and other on page factors of a page , say home page, until it ranks? Will that impact on improvement? Or else will it be counted in the negative side?

Duplicate Post Titles in WordPress with
Hi, First off, this is a WordPress specific question. we migrated a site into WordPress, with hundreds of long articles that are split into 3 or 4 pages each. Each of these articles was entered as an individual post, split into different pages using the tag. We're using the yoast seo plugin. The problem then is that each of the pages gets the same title and meta description. Has anyone a good solution to differentiate the  pages? Thanks,

Title tag not changing in Google. Can somebody take a look for me?
I'm using Yoast SEO plugin for the website. The website is http://www.emerypharmaservices.com. It appears on the webpage, the title tag is correct (home page should be Contract Laboratory Research Services for Analytical Chemistry and Microbiology), however, in Google it only says Emeryville Pharmaceutical Services. Could this be due to my settings? Please advise. Thank you

Good Seo Titles
Hi. Mybsite is www.theprinterdepo.com and I am trying to find a good template for my product/page titles. Many users search our products by the product model: something like Q2121X. Some other users search by: hp 1320 printer or just 1320 printer. They will almost never search for hp 1320 new, or hp 1320 refurbished. My website is developed in magento, and we have a SEO plugin in which I can put a template for the URL and also a template for the product title. I was thinking for title and URL. title + condition + productmodel However many users search for: "refurbished printers" and maybe its better that our products say something like this: HP 1320 Refurbished Printer, instead of: HP 1320 Printer - Refurbished - Q2121X Please let me know your suggestions.

Title tag same text as H1?
What is the group's opinion on whether or not the <title>tag should have the exact same text as the <h1> tag on the same page? Obviously both should contain the phrase that page is optimized for but is it better to have them be variants of each other, or both the same and maybe equal to the key phrase that page is optimized for? Thanks.</p> <p>Example:</p> <blockquote style="background: none repeat scroll 0% 0% #f7f7f7; padding-top: 5px; margin-left: 0px; padding-left: 2px; padding-bottom: 5px; white-space: nowrap; overflow-y: auto; font-family: monospace;"> <p>title: los angeles blue widgets</p> <p>h1: los angeles blue widgets</p> </blockquote> <p>Or,</p> <blockquote style="background: none repeat scroll 0% 0% #f7f7f7; padding-top: 5px; margin-left: 0px; padding-left: 2px; padding-bottom: 5px; white-space: nowrap; overflow-y: auto; font-family: monospace;"> <p>title: los angeles blue widgets</p> <p>h1: blue widgets in los angeles</p> </blockquote> <p>Where the page is trying to optimize for "los angeles blue widgets"</p></title>

Title Tag for homepage Not displaying correctly in Google Search Results
Hi We have a problem with how Google is is displaying our title tag when a user does a search on our company name Increation. I have attached two images of how the title tag for our Homepage is dispayed in Google Search Results. One of them is "increations" - this is the result which is displaying incorrectly. The other shows Kitchens | Bathrooms | | Luxury Kitchens |  - which is how we want the title tag to be dispalyed. This inorreclt result is only displayed when a user types in Increation into Google. (BTW it only happens on Google, not the other search engines). To give you some background an external SEO company did some work for us (before I joined as usual :-)). They built a lot of anchor links with the word "Increations" pointing back to our home page. Is this whats causing the probelm? Also how can we resolve this issue so that the correct Title Tag is displayed. Thanks for your help. Mik increation_search_results_google#hyhfZ
