Lost Google rankings for the main keywords
-
Hello everybody,
I love seomoz and was enjoying all the benefits it has, was reading Q&A and implementing new marketing strategies for my website.
I would really appreciate if anyone could explain my situation. The website, to which I devoted last 12 months of my time, was suddenly dropped from it's main keywords to nowhere 2 days ago, it does not look like a "dance" because some of my competitors lost their rankings too. I think its a penalty.
The site http://goo.gl/3VTMq is almost 2 years old, of the highest quality content. I've been adding content slowly over 24 months, building backlinks slowly, the rankings also were going up slowly.
Here are some of the keywords I've been ranking for: car insurance companies - 12, best auto insurance companies - 1, top car insurance companies 1, cheap auto insurance - 16, low cost auto insurance 4,lowest auto insurance - 2, and many more...
According to seomoz, I have no major problems with on-site seo, I have low bounce rate, high pages/visit and high time on site.
There is only one left - incoming backlinks. Google says that it just can't hurt you, but I think this is the only explanation of my problem. My backlinks consist of everything - from high quality contextual backlinks, to lower quality comment backlinks. I used Press Release services too..
This problem is like a nail in my head, I look forward to hearing your response.
Thanks in advance,
Vaz

Hey Vaz,
I didn't see any news about a big update of the Google algorithm recently. The reconsideration request take some time to process, if the hidden links were the cause of your lost rankings, it should come back soon now that you fixed the problem.
Check your (old & new) competitors backlinks via Open Site Explorer or Majestic SEO to see what they did to be ahead of you in the rankings.
If some of your competitors lost rankings too, maybe they were hit with the same problem as you (malicious code/hidden spammy links).
In any case good luck with your website !

Hey Aeronet,
The spam backlinks was an issue but the main reason in my case can be a major Google Algo Update. I see that my competitors lost their ranks too, the index is full of "new" spammy affiliate websites with almost no content... this is crazy.
I am losing ranks each day, can't figure whats wrong...
Anyone experienced the same?

You have to verify that you're the owner through webmaster tools (if that's not done yet ^^), and then you can follow the link here : http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=35843
Just explain that your website has been hacked, but be sure that the problem is fixed before asking them to reconsiderate.

Any tips on filling reconsideration request?

I will do my best...
This theme is custom, someone accessed it and changed footer file.
Thanks again, will update thread after reply from Google.

You can find many articles on how to secure more your wordpress (for example http://wp.tutsplus.com/tutorials/11-quick-tips-securing-your-wordpress-site/ ).
It could come from the code of your theme, if you download it on a shady wp theme website, it comes with a malicious code in your footer (base64 encode so it doesn't look suspicious).
And as your SEO in general, try to use the H1 on your homepage for SEO and not only for the visual style

Thanks Aeronet a lot, I have never thought about this!
It would be great if seomoz ads such ability - to check sites content for suspicious links.
How do you manage to stay safe from hackers? I have latest WordPress & all plugins updated.
-
I watched your code, maybe you're victim of a hack because there are several spammy links hidden in your page.
Check your wordpress plugins, watch on your ftp in your includes if one has been modified recently, and when it's corrected ask for a reconsideration in Google webmaster Tools so Google can watch if the problem is gone and re-rank your website.

Thanks.
What type of additional information?
-
Can’t really give you much back without more information but I would finality try and stay clear from linking with low PR sites and concentrate on higher quality websites.

Negative SEO and big decrease in main keyword ranking
Hi about 4 months ago, I had ranking #1 to #4 for "SEO" in Persian in my country; but someone made about 1000 spam links to my site and some other industry sites. I disavowed the links when I see (after 2-3 days of OSE detection). But now I'm in the page 2 of rankings for the most important keyword I ever had. The point is, My visits increased in this months, but I lost my rankings for this keyword not others. The spammy links targeted my main keyword. Whats you idea to get my ranking back? I'm writing content about SEO, Marketing and blogging for about 4 years and I don't have any bad resume in buying links or stuffing keywords or ... All natural.

What has a better chance of ranking alongside my main site for my company name, a subdomain or new domain?
Hi Moz, Do search engines really treat subdomains as separate domains in this regard? Or are we more likely to get more real estate on the first page with a new domain? Our goal is to have our main site and this new subdomain or domain ranking in positions 1 and 2 for our company name. This is going to be a careers site/portal. Thanks for reading!

Different rankings for same keyword in different geo locations
I am listed at # 11 in google.com.pk for a same keyword but listed 4th when I use &gl=us in the same query or use a US ip address. Could this be because google's recent update and maybe they are taking time to push the update towards other countries or something else? In any case I see decent rankings when I use the query in google.com or when I use gl=us, but lower quality results in google.com.pk so please guide what is going on. Thanks in advance for guidance (y)

Keyword Research: How best to target keywords without using a region as part of the search query.
When doing keyword research and trying to rank for a keyword. I am wondering if we need to localize the query by adding a city to it. For example Phoenix Web Design vs. just targeting web design since Google is localizing search results now. Then when creating content and optimizing the site do we just put the keyword in the title and page content or do we also add the region/city to the keyword phrase? Any insight would be appreciated.

Can I swap a website yet keep it's high ranking for a competitive keyword?
Couldn't fit the entire question in the main bit so the explanation is here: Working on a client's website which is hosted by volusion and also been doing SEO for them for about a year. Now we've finally got them ranking at the lower end of page 1 (around 10+) for their main keyword. They now want to move from volusion over to Amazon Web Store 😢 which seems to be an SEO nightmare from even my basic understanding of SEO. From looking at the coding and the way Amazon Web store is built on top of how restricted you are from doing anything with it, I am almost certain the shop will be extremely difficult to optimise and we will have to completely change nearly all of the content. Finally! the actual question; I was thinking I could get them to delay their move to Amazon webstore until they are ranking in the top 5 for this top keyword. Once they switch over, i assume they'll keep this ranking for at least a short while? This keyword attracts a high volume of traffic and if this traffic is clicking on the result for their website, and google sees that people are finding this website valuable (not clicking back onto google results). Will they be able hold onto this high ranking? Basically what I'm asking is, this will be a terrible outdated badly SEO'd shop, but if a high volume of people are clicking on it and staying on it from their lingering ranking will Google just let it stay at the top? A massive amount of gratitude in advance for anyone who tries to help with this! 😄

My homepage doesn't rank anymore. It's been replaced by irrelevant subpages which rank around 100-200 instead of top 5.
Hey guys, I think I got some kind of penalty for my homepage. I was in top5 for my keywords. Then a few days ago, my homepage stopped ranking for anything except searching for my domain name in Google. sitename.com/widget-reviews/ previously ranked #3 for "widget reviews"

but now....
sitename.com/widget-training-for-pet-cats/ is ranking #84 for widget reviews instead. Similarly across all my other keywords, irrelevant, wrong pages are ranking. Did I get some kind of penalty?0 -
Holiday hijack lowers Google ranking
A client of ours made a mistake that has dropped their Google rankings. They posted a holiday greeting on our homepage for several weeks, and now the search engines are not picking the page up at all. Any thoughts or suggestions on how to repair this?

Random Google?
In 2008 we performed an experiment which showed some seemingly random behaviour by Google (indexation, caching, pagerank distributiuon). Today I put the results together and analysed the data we had and got some strange results which hint at a possibility that Google purposely throws in a normal behaviour deviation here and there. Do you think Google randomises its algorithm to prevent reverse engineering and enable chance discoveries or is it all a big load balancing act which produces quasi-random behaviour?
