Attracta.com / "weekly submissions to top 100 search engines"
-
I recently received an offer from Attracta.com because I have a hostgator account. They are offering different levels of service for submitting xml sitemaps on a weekly basis. Is this a good idea?
Thanks for your feedback!
Will

There seems to be some confusion surrounding XML sitemap usage so I'd like to clear that up.
Many people question the need for an XML Sitemap, and for frequently updating it.However, creating and submitting an accurate up-to-date and properly formatted XML Sitemap in a fundamental part on good on-site SEO and really pays off.Websites are never hurt or penalized in any way by using sitemaps. Even if you already have a XML sitemap, adding a second will still help. In fact, if you look at Google's own robots.txt file ( http://www.google.com/robots.txt ) you can clearly see they are using multiple sitemaps themselves.
Google recommends XML Sitemap submission in all of their Webmaster and SEO tutorials: " Whether your site is old or new, we highly recommend you submit an XML Sitemap" - Google Webmaster Tutorial
In fact, recommending people NOT use a XML Sitemap in #4 on SEOmoz's list: "The Biggest SEO Mistakes SEOmoz Has Ever Made" written by a widely recognized SEO expert, the CEO of SEOMoz himself: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/whiteboard-friday-the-biggest-seo-mistakes-seomoz-has-ever-made
Attracta is the largest supplier of XML sitemaps with over 2.8 million websites using them, and that seems to be what makes them have such a very high PR. Also, Attracta sitemaps are free, show you exactly when Google and other search engines access them, and can be updated and resubmitted at anytime.

I found your replies helpful as I have just found a competitor site jumped into no.1 position from nowhere. Their strongest link in OSE is from their sitemap page listed on http://cdn.attracta.com/sitemap/competitor-sitemap/ which seems to have very high DA/PA so I was thinking of submitting the same.
Of course I already have my own sitemap.xml created on my site and submitted to Google Webmaster Tools and I don't have any crawl or indexing problems, but I was thinking that getting this additional sitemap hosted on Attracta must be passing some link juice because of the PA?
They seem to have a free submission just for sitemap so I thought an additional submission here would be free and harmless? Would it not?
I guess I am hesitating after what has been written here though.

Hi Will,
The advice already given here is solid.
In addition to that, a little personal experience I will share.
I had a client who accepted the offer you have received when the service first came out a couple of years or so ago. They told me that they saw a significant loss of indexed pages and traffic to their site within a short time.
I cannot say that what happened to their site was a direct result of using the service as I was not in control of the site at that time. However, I do know that once they decided they wanted to remove the service it took me almost 8 months to get the company to do so!
Hope that helps,
Sha

Do you need this service? Do you have a problem getting your site indexed?
As Casey said, as long as you follow the guidelines search engines can quickly index your site. Building some good links from good authority sites can help search engines find you.
Google webmaster tools tells you when you sitemap was last processed and you can see your crawl stats to see how many pages are being crawled/day.
If your site isn't getting indexed, then I'd try to find out the route cause rather than pay for a "search engine nagging" service like this.

Hi Will,
Today, there isn't much value in search engines besides the top 3, Google, Bing & Yahoo. There is really no difference in those 100 search engines to the top 3.
That being said, Google, Bing & Yahoo are all sophisticated enough to crawl and find your website without it being "submitted". It is a great idea to submit a sitemap for sure, but you dont need to submit it every week. If you follow the http://www.sitemaps.org/ guidelines you can set it up where the search engines will automatically revisit your sitemap and crawl your content on a daily, weekly, monthly, etc basis.
Also, If you are using WordPress you can download a free plugin to create your sitemap that makes it easy to set up the crawl basis.
I hope this helps.
Thanks,
Casey

Significant "Average Position" dips in Search Console each time I post on Google My Business
Hi everyone, Several weeks ago I noticed that each Wednesday my site's Average Position in Search Console dipped significantly. Immediately I identified that this was the day my colleague published and back-linked a blog post, and so we spent the next few weeks testing and monitoring everything we did. We discovered that it was ONLY when we created a Google My Business post that the Average Position dipped, and on the 1st July we tested it one more time. The results were the same (please see attached image). I am 100% confident that Google My Business is the cause of the issue, but can't identify why. The image I upload belongs to me, the text isn't spammy or stuffed with keywords, the Learn More links to my own website, and I never receive any warnings from Google about the content. I would love to hear the community's thoughts on this and how I can stop the issue from continuing. I should note, that my Google My Business insights are generally positive i.e. no dips in search results etc. My URL is https://www.photographybymatthewjames.com/ Thanks in advance Matthew C0000OTrpfmNWx8g

Does Duplicate Content Actually "Penalize" a Domain?
Hi all, Some co-workers and myself were in a conversation this afternoon regarding if duplicate content actually causes a penalty on your domain. Reference: https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/66359?hl=en http://searchengineland.com/googles-matt-cutts-duplicate-content-wont-hurt-you-unless-it-is-spammy-167459 Both sources from Google do not say "duplicate content causes a penalty." However, they do allude to spammy content negatively affecting a website. Why it came up: We originally were talking about syndicated content (same content across multiple domains; ex: "5 explanations of bad breath") for the purpose of social media sharing. Imagine if dentists across the nation had access to this piece of content (5 explanations of bad breath) simply for engagement with their audience. They would use this to post on social media & to talk about in the office. But they would not want to rank for that piece of duplicated content. This type of duplicated content would be valuable to dentists in different cities that need engagement with their audience or simply need the content. This is all hypothetical but serious at the same time. I would love some feedback & sourced information / case studies. Is duplicated content actually penalized or will that piece of content just not rank? (feel free to reference that example article as a real world example). **When I say penalized, I mean "the domain is given a negative penalty for showing up in SERPS" - therefore, the website would not rank for "dentists in san francisco, ca". That is my definition of penalty (feel free to correct if you disagree). Thanks all & look forward to a fun, resourceful conversation on duplicate content for the other purposes outside of SEO. Cole

Why are "outdated" or "frowned upon" tactics still dominating?
Hey, my first post here. I recently picked up a new client in real estate for a highly competitive market. One trend I'm noticing with all the top sites they are doing old tactics such as:
White Hat / Black Hat SEO | | Jay328
-Paid Directories
-Terrible/Spam Directories
-Overuse of exact text keywords for example: City name + real estate
-Blogroll/link exchange
-Tons of meta key words
-B.S. press releases blog commenting with kw as name Out of all the competition there is only one guy who is following the rules of today. One thing I'm noticing is that nobody is doing legit guest blogging, has great social presence, has awesome on page, etc. It's pretty frustrating as I'm trying to follow the rules and seeing these guys kill it by doing "bad seo". Anybody else find themselves in this situation? I know I'm probably beating a dead horse but I needed to vent about this 😉2 -
Blog on 2 domains (.org/.com), Canonical to Solve?
I have a client that has moved a large majority of content to their .org domain, including the blog. This is causing some issues for the .com domain. I want to retain the blog on the .org and have it's content also show on the .com. I would place the canonical tag on the .com Is this possible? Is this recommended?

Is warriorforum.com information reliable?
I see lots of ads like "Boost Your Trust Rank with pure .EDU Anchor Text Backlinks" Is this for real? And if it is what's the real value of such links? I assume they would be from some spam comments on some .edu blogs...right? Is it worth going this route? Thank you!

Seo style="display: none;" ?
i want to have a funktion which shortens text in categorie view in my shop. apple is doing this in their product configurator see the "learn more" button at the right side: http://store.apple.com/us/configure/MC915LL/A apple is doing this by adding dynamic content but i want it more seo type by leaving the content indexable by google. i know from a search that this was used in the past years by black had seos to cover keywordstuffing. i also read an article at google. i beleive that this is years ago and keywordstuffing is completly no option anymore. so i beleive that google just would recognise it like the way its meant to be. but if i would not be sure i would not ask here 🙂 what do you think?
