Best way to redirect 3 sites to 1 new one.
-
Hi All
We currently have 3 old sites that have tones of content. Due to brand/business consolidation we have merge all 3 to produce 1 website. The new site contains all the old content from the old 3.
So, I know I need to 301 redirect all the old content from the previous sites to the equivelent content on the new sites but am confused how you do this with 3 domains?
One of the domains is being replaced with the new site.
So I have:
All the content for all the sites have been imported into a new site and any duplicate content issues havce been resolved.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Thanks

I understand, I didn't actually mean redirect content as such but I realise I was a little unclear in my questions.
So basically I should point all 3 domains to the new one then redirect-wise, is the below correct?
redirect 301 http://www.oldsite.com/some-category/article/ http://www.newsite.com/category/article

When you do a redirect, all you do is redirect requests for that page.
So when the search engine follows a link, it is redirected to another page, and it gives the link juice to that page. you do not redirect content or any thing else about the page but its incomming links, so if there is no links pointing to the site, there is nothing to redirect.
when you do a 301 redirect you are redirecting links, the page that link comes from and the link text should be relevant to the new page.

Also, any pointers on how to achieve this?
"Above this redirect i would redirect to deep pages that do not have the same path, by checking the existing path of the link. This way you dont have chain redirects"

Hi Thanks for the reply.
Ok, so use the redirect code you provided at the end of the htaccess. I'm not sure I follow what you mean about redirecting links not content, I'm not talking about external links purely just about any old content from the old domains that may show in serps and getting these redirected to their new versions on the new site.
A clearer example of what I have is:
Old domains each cover one brand
So the new site is structured like:
So how do I handle the redirects from old pages? Like this?
redirect 301 www.brand1.com/some-page www.newsite/brand1/some-page/
Then use your redirect code last? Also the site structure (as above) is totally different than before so would that effect your redirect code?
To make it trickier one of the sites is a hosted blog platform that I dont have ftp access to but I can repoint the domain. I could repoint this domain to new hosting with a page saying moved and have a .htaccess under that domain doing the redirects.

I would point all the domains at the new domain.
Then have a rule that states, if the host does not equal new domain then make sure it does. see code below. But put this last. as it is only good for links that have the same path as the old site, like the home page and any others you managed to keep the same path
Above this redirect i would redirect to deep pages that do not have the same path, by checking the existing path of the link. This way you dont have chain redirects
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www.newdomain.com$
RewriteRule (.*) http://www.newdomain.com/$1 [R=301,L]but having said this,
First i would not do this all at the same time, SE will discount your redirects if you redirect too many domains to the one domain. there is a matt cutts video about this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a70ygsHgvMw
Also, you do not redirect content, you redirect links. the important thing is the page the link comes from and the link text, the page it did link to is irelevant, then decide on that where to send it. so if no links to the old page there is no link juice to redirect.
Do not send all to the home page, they will be discounted if you do

I should add that one of the sites is hosted with a blogging platform (blog harbour) thats about to shut down therefore I can't upload a htaccess with redirects in. So I was just going to point the domain at the new domain name and add redirects to a htaccess file on the new domains like:
On new domains .htaccess:
redirect 301 www.olddomain.co.uk/category/article.php www.newdomain.co.uk/category/article.php.
Is this the best way?

Redirection chain and Javascript Redirect
Hi, A redirection chain is usually defined as a page redirecting to another page which itself is another redirection. URL1 ---(301/302)---> URL2 ---(301/302)---> URL3 But what about Javascript redirect? They seem to be a different beast: URL1 ---(301/302)---> URL2 ---(200 then Javascript redirect)---> URL3 From what I know if the javascript redirect is instant Google counts it as a 301 permanent redirection, but I'm still not sure about if this counts as a redirection chain. Most of the tools (such as moz) only see the first redirection. So is that scenario a redirection chain or no?

Google indexing staging / development site that is redirected...
Hi Moz Fans! - Please help. We had a acme.stagingdomain.com while a site was in development, when it went live it redirected (302) to acmeprofessionalservices.com (real names redacted!!) no known external links to staging site although staging site url has been emailed from Google Apps(!!!) now found that staging site is in the index even though it redirects to the proper public site. and some (but not all) of the pages are in the index too. They all redirect to the proper public site when visited. It is convenient to have a redirect from the staging site to the new one for the team, Chrome etc. remember frequently visited sites. Be a shame to lose that. Yes, these pages can be removed using webmaster tools.

But how did they get in the index to start with? And if we're building a new site, and a customer has an existing site is there a danger of duplicate content etc. penalties caused by the staging site? We had a similar incident recently when a PDF that was not linked anywhere on the site appeared in the index. The link had been emailed through Google Apps, and visited in Chrome, but that was it. So 3 questions. Why is the staging site still in the index despite the redirects? How did they get in the index in the first place? Will the new staging site affect the rank of the existing site, eg. duplicate content penalties?0 -
Best Place to Redirect 301 to?
Hey Everyone! I have an old site with hundreds of blog posts that are very spammy (duplicate content, keyword stuffed, and just plain bad content). I am going to redirect them and delete them from WordPress but I'm wondering where is the best place to redirect them to? Home page, other posts, other pages...? Any thoughts would be appreciated! Thanks!

Best way to manage SEO for a massive events listing website.
I run a website that tracks entertainment for the entire state of South Dakota. While I've made some fantastic strides in gaining traffic, I feel lost on how to manage all those entries in an SEO friendly manner. I have a TON of errors showing on my crawl diagnostics and I just don't know what to do. The nature of the website is such that there are going to be duplications all over the place. I know that I can help some of this by getting my canonical links setup properly (that's coming in my next version of the site's theme), but what else should I do to make those event listings friendly for the SE's?? http://www.entertainsd.com

Best practices for switching site languages around
Hi folks. The site in question is at http://bit.ly/UDV186 It is split into English and Spanish versions, each at root/en and root/es respectively. The home page is in Spanish. We're trying to rank the site for English keywords so we want to switch the homepage to English and put the Spanish version as secondary. What are the best practices for this? Can we just literally swap the two versions around onto the existing URLs, i.e. take the English text and put it onto the home page? Provided all links point to the correct page, would that be fine? Are there any other best practice considerations to take? Thanks in advance.

Best META Fields to Include on New Site
I am in the process of transitioning sites to a Drupal CMS and am curious to know what META information to provide on each of the new site pages. Best Way To Handle Expired Content
Hi, I have a client's site that posts job openings. There is a main list of available jobs and each job has an individual page linked to from that main list. However, at some point the job is no longer available. Currently, the job page goes away and returns a status 404 after the job is no longer available. The good thing is that the job pages get links coming into the site. The bad thing is that as soon as the job is no longer available, those links point to a 404 page. Ouch. Currently Google Webmaster Tools shows 100+ 404 job URLs that have links (maybe 1-3 external links per). The question is what to do with the job page instead of returning a 404. For business purposes, the client cannot display the content after the job is no longer available. To avoid duplicate content issues, the old job page should have some kind of unique content saying the job is longer available. Any thoughts on what to do with those old job pages? Or would you argue that it is appropriate to return 404 header plus error page since this job is truly no longer a valid page on the site? Thanks for any insights you can offer.

Looking for some help adding a 301 redirect for my Site
Hi there, I am trying to eliminate the 'www' using a 301 redirect script as I have duplicate page titles for both versions (with and without the 'www') I checked the page authority and found the pages without the 'www' to be ranked higher. For this reason I believe it would be wise to go for this option. I have an .htaccess file, all I need is the code and I should be ok 🙂 Thanks!
