I am building a forum and its a general forum, what are the best practices to gain users/members. I dont expect to rank for every category in the SERP's. Doe's anyone here have any experience in gaining traffic/members to a forum?

I'd say you need to have a reason why your forum is better than what is already out there, and why a broad forum where any topic goes is better than a niche forum.
I'm at the opposite end of the spectrum from you. I run RC Naval Combat, a forum that is devoted to RC warships that shoot and sink each other. We have a custom design warship registry where you can show off your boat and list details about the scale (1:96, 1:144, etc), class (USS Iowa, HMS Revenge, etc), type (battleship, cruiser, destroyer, etc), local club, and more. We have a number of subforums for various aspects of the hobby.
That site has more activity and members than the warship combat subforum of a couple of major RC hobby forum sites. Those sites are much bigger, but look at us as the crazy people who shoot ball bearings at each other and sink each others ships. There can be helpful advice in the other subforums, but they just don't have the experience with fully submersing a ship and how we need our things set up differently in many cases.
Think about what exists out there already, and what you can do better. You're going to have this battle in many subject areas I would imagine. You need a value proposition about why people should come to your site for their discussions. It could be ease of use, mobile friendly, unlimited image uploads, a way of doing something way better than most everyone else is..but it's more than a build it and they will come proposition.

I'm in the same boat as you although my forum is more of a niche. One idea that's been recommended to me is creating a contest of some sort for a prize, with the stipulation that you need to make X posts to enter. Granted, you'll mostly have people posting to meet the threshold but it will at least get them into your forum and you might have some people who decide to stay.
Another tip is, if you have access to OSE here, add your competitors and see who's linking to them. I've found some directories that I didn't know about that my competitors were getting traffic from and made sure to add my site to them as well.
And of course, as I'm sure you'll hear a million times, try to make sure you have good content. When your website comes up in a search engine you want to make sure people click on it.
Another tip not so much in regards to attracting people but keeping them, is to keep the number of subforums you have minimal. If you're just starting off the worst thing you can do is have 15+ subforums; your users will never interact. Better to make those as the need arises.
Finally, a really good resource is The Admin Zone, a forum about, well, forums. There's a lot of information there that can help generate traffic. Here's the URL: http://www.theadminzone.com/
Good luck!

I have found using LinkedIn Groups to generate an awesome buzz. I would try starting there, and enter a group.
Let me know how it works for you!
Cheers!

How to implement products in facebook to generate maximum traffic to site and facebook profile page?
Lets take the example of a hotel reservation site offering 500 hotels. Any suggestions on how to present the 500 hotels within their facebook page so that they generate maximum traffic and interaction? No intention to offer checkout on facebook. E.g. adding image of each hotel in the photo album with link to website and some information about hotel. Any ideas? Any good posts or articles on the topic?

Do i direct traffic to all social platforms or not?
Hi ...I have a brand that is very strong socially..specifically facebook and twitter and this is where we have directed all strategy and traffic. We recently wanted to establish a presence on google+ and have done so. My feeling at this point is to maintain a presence on google+ but only direct social traffic to facebook and twitter from the brands website....so we can keep the focus here aswell as the stronger community. I have noticed other brands doing something similar.....is this a good strategy or should we be directing traffic to all the platforms from the site?...bottomline should we be linking to all our social platforms from the brands website or keep it linked to the stronger platforms and just maintain a presence on the others? thank you

Received Tons of Traffic From Facebook..But from where?
I checked my GA account today and noticed that I had a ton of traffic from Facebook to a specific blog article on my site. I tried to look into it, but I can't seem to find exactly where it's coming from. Is there anyway I can figure this out? It's been bugging me all day.

Do forums still have any SEO value?
Hi All! I want to know what people think about having forums on their sites. Do you still find value on these, or are they mostly a waste of resources? Would it be better to use facebook's registration plugin or something along those lines? Any other thoughts or suggestions on this topic would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Margarita

Best way to capture traffic from tweet pictures
I tweet a lot from several twitter accounts, and have a lot of traffic from my tweet pictures. However, I'd like to capture that traffic on my blog. I've tried a few plug in's that allowed me to use my blog has a host for the images I tweet out, but I've yet to find one that works very well. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas / suggestions on how I could send the traffic from all of the pictures I tweet out to my blog? Also, I don't want this to clog up the home page. At one time I used a plug in that allowed me to do something like this, and I created a separate category (http://noahsdad.com/twitter) and excluded that category from my home page. There were a few issues though, the formatting didn't work well for people viewing the pictures on twitter. And the plug in conflicted with other plug ins I was running. I haven't tried it in a while, so maybe it works better now. I hoping someone out there was some suggestions. thanks!

Buying Traffic?
Hi Everyone, Has anybody ever bought traffic using a site like visitorboost.com? What are your thoughts? What other services are there? We are trying to supplement our "like/follower" campaigns, while we wait on our organic methods to build followers. Think of a HVAC company just starting out in social....they dont have time to build and nurture a list, (although we will for the future) they need sales now...so they trun to radio, print ads, etc. If we could buy thousands of followers in a demographic that made sense and it was affordable, is it worth a try to get the word out? Thanks in advance guys!

What would be a good way to drive traffic to a temporary post - job posting / classified ad?
I was wondering what would be the best way to drive traffic to a posting that will only last 30 days. I didn't think linking would be the answer, but wanted to get opinions. I was thinking pinging and social media (Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter)... What would your strategy be?
