SeoMoz Directory List

Is it worth cracking through the directory list on SEOMOZ as the first step when link building to get things moving?
-
It certainly won't hurt, as long as you keep the following in mind:
- Not every directory link is right for your site. Be selective and don't go for every link out there.
- Pace yourself. A good hint I got from Ian Lurie's Fat Free Guide is the 2:1 rule: for every two directory links you build, make sure to build one genuinely natural link. This helps to keep your link profile looking “natural”.
- Research. Understand where your link will be placed before you go after it. Check Google’s cache of the page to make sure they are indexing it. Large directories are often plagued by bad SEO, and not every link carries the weight it should.
- Seek relevancy. Ask yourself if this link has the potential to send qualified traffic to your site. Even if it's a small amount of traffic, it's probably worth the effort.
I originally wrote these tips in a blog post published a few months ago.
According to rule #2, you should be safe with a couple of directory links - but if you are just getting started I wouldn't push it further than this. To really add value, try to ensure they are related to your niche. The harder it is to get into a directory, the more value it adds.

I would agree with seohive. It's a great place to start in order to get some quick wins, such as web directories that you might not be using.
In the long run you really want to be creating unique and more importantly useful content. This content will be the stuff of dreams that gets shared and naturally builds links.
Do this in conjunction whilst using social media to share that content with people who share an interest in that product and they will hopefully link back to your site, and if they are interested and operate in a market related to your product then hopefully that extra relevance will add some extra credence to your link.

Hi ActivitySuper
I would say if you get 5 mins, certainly have a look at the directory as there are some good sites in here. Depending on your business, your target audience? i.e local, national or international. I'd be more interested in researching link building in a more relevent way and being more creative in how you get your links.
For example, building linkable content, something people want to link too? also searching for competitor broken links? maybe you can rebuild the content?

How important are directory submissions to my off-page SEO?
Hi Guys, One area of my link building that I carry out is looking for online directories and social bookmarking websites to submit my website to. I do this in order to gain some backlinks to my website. What I want to know is are they really worth my time, and if so, which types would you say are the most important? I have obviously been through many directory lists, both on SEOmoz and on other websites, and also performed various searches to find relevant directories to my website. I just feel that posting up a link that lies deep in a directory online that, more often than not, have very low PA and lots of outbound links will offer very little in terms of SEO. If anything, this could really bring down the quality of my links and be detrimental to my website, right? This is a subject that I have been thinking about for a while and especially with the recent algorithm update from Google and the attack on many web directories that are, lets say, 'not playing by the rules', I'm worried that this will have a negative impact for my website. Let me know your thoughts guys and if you have any tips on how to get higher quality links from these kind of submission then I'm all ears! Matt.

Recently I discovered an opportunity for a link on the Better Business Bureau, but it cots $600/yr. In my niche I want the link for nothing more than link building. Is the link worth paying for? (I read the YouMoz post on the subject, but still no definitive answer).

Directory Listing Quality
Have any of you ever purchased a directory listing with Absolute Directory (http:www.absolutedirectory.com)? I was thinking about suggesting it to some of my clients since it was inexpensive, had a good domain authority (58), moz trust (5.81), and didn't seem to be filled with any ads or obtrusive content. Any thoughts? Is this to good to be true? Regards - Kyle
