Suggested crawl rate in google webmaster tools?
-
hey moz peeps, got a general question:
what is the suggested custom crawl rate in google webmaster tools? or is it better to "Let Google determine my crawl rate (recommended)"
If you guys have any good suggestions on this and site why that would be very helpful, thanks guys!

Hi David,
According to Google's webmasters help page, it states that the crawl rate option is just about how fast it crawls your site and not how often it does. Check out the link for more information about it.
Also, I wouldn't stress to much on the settings because the search engines are going to do what they do, just make sure to create good content and get it out there, the search engines will see this and depending on how well it is they we come more often on there own.
Hope this helps!

I believe it is much better to allow the search engines to handle it themselves. Check your logs to see what they are doing, so you know if they are hammering you server. If they are, you can slow them down using the robots.txt file On a large site, google will often such out a few hundred thousand pages per day. Yahoo will do more, but their crawler isn't always friendly or smart. Sometimes different Slurp crawlers will request the same pages. Bing emailed me six months ago and asked that we remove the 2second delay I added. I did that because they were hammering the server, but only sent a few thousand readers per day. Google doesn't usually hammer the server, but when 5 or 6 are hitting you at the same time, it can affect you site response time. - and then some of them want to penalize you for having a poor experience for visitors.

Canonical error from Google
Moz couldn't explain this properly and I don't understand how to fix it. Google emailed this morning saying "Alternate page with proper canonical tag." Moz also kinda complains about the main URL and the main URL/index.html being duplicate. Of course they are. The main URL doesn't work without the index.html page. What am I missing? How can I fix this to eliminate this duplicate problem which to me isn't a problem?

Crawl Issues / Partial Fetch Via Google
We recently launched a new site that doesn't have any ads, but in Webmaster Tools under "Fetch as Google" under the rendering of the page I see: Googlebot couldn't get all resources for this page. Here's a list: URL Type Reason Severity https://static.doubleclick.net/instream/ad_status.js
Technical SEO | | vikasnwuScript Blocked Low robots.txt https://googleads.g.doubleclick.net/pagead/id
AJAX Blocked Low robots.txt Not sure where that would be coming from as we don't have any ads running on our site? Also, it's stating the the fetch is a "partial" fetch. Any insight is appreciated.

Bulk URL Removal in Webmaster Tools
One of Wordpress sites was hacked (for about 10 hours), and Google picked up 4000+ urls in the index. The site is fixed, but I'm stuck with all those urls in the index. All the urls of of the form: walkerorthodontics.com/index.php?online-payday-cash-loan.htmloncewe The only bulk removal option I could find was to remove an entire folder, but I can't do that, as it would only leave the homepage and kill off everything else. For some crazy reason, the removal tools doesn't support wildcards, so that obvious solution is right out. So, how do it get rid of 4000 results? And no, waiting around for them to 404 out of the index isn't an option.

Google is indexing my directories
I'm sure this has been asked before, but I was looking at all of Google's results for my site and I found dozens of results for directories such as: Index of /scouting/blog/wp-includes/js/swfupload/plugins Obviously I don't want those indexed. How do I prevent Google from indexing those? Also, it only seems to be doing it with Wordpress, not any of the directories on my main site. (We have a wordpress blog, which is only a portion of the site)

Should we use Google's crawl delay setting?
We’ve been noticing a huge uptick in Google’s spidering lately, and along with it a notable worsening of render times. Yesterday, for example, Google spidered our site at a rate of 30:1 (google spider vs. organic traffic.) So in other words, for every organic page request, Google hits the site 30 times. Our render times have lengthened to an avg. of 2 seconds (and up to 2.5 seconds). Before this renewed interest Google has taken in us we were seeing closer to one second average render times, and often half of that. A year ago, the ratio of Spider to Organic was between 6:1 and 10:1. Is requesting a crawl-delay from Googlebot a viable option? Our goal would be only to reduce Googlebot traffic, and hopefully improve render times and organic traffic. Thanks, Trisha
