A rel="canonical" to www.homepage.com/home.aspx Hurts my Rank?
-
Hello,
The CMS that I use makes 3 versions of the homepage:
www.homepage.com/home.aspxBy default the CMS is set to rel=canonical all versions to the www.homepage.com/home.aspx version.
If someone were to link to a website they most likely aren't going to link to www.homepage.com/home.aspx, they'll link to www.homepage.com which makes that link juice flow through the canonical to www.homepage.com/home.aspx right? Why make that extra loop at all? Wouldn't that be splitting the juice? I know 301's loose 1-5 % juice, but not sure about canonical. I assume it works the same way?
Thanks!

I would recommend you to make contact with your web agency and see if they can fix this for you. The best solution is to get one single unique URL for the index page.
Quite often, the web agencies can fix it, I´ve worked with a lot of customers having the same issue.
Good luck!

A canonical tells google that all 3 are the same page, I'm not honestly sure if there is a loss, but if there is no re-direct involved it should in theory not be a problem.
What I /would/ recomend however is setting up some 301's and cannonicals to the homepage.com address if you can. If it /is/ a problem or ever becomes one, this will ensure that your getting the most use out of the link.

Does rel="canonical" support protocol relative URL?
I need to switch a site from http to https. We gonna add 301 redirect all over the board. I also use rel="canonical" to strip some queries parameter from the index (parameter uses to identify which navigation elements were use.) rel="canonical" can be used with relative or absolute links, but Google recommend using absolute links to minimize potential confusion or difficulties. So here my question, did you see any issue using relative protocol in rel="canonical"? Instead of:

Rottentomatoes.com - mobile ranks better than desktop?
Howdy Mozzers, I don't see this very often but figured I would share my findings, no surprise that I found a huge portal like rottentomatoes.com ranking for the keyword: new on dvd , but for the last month or so - the page that is indexed for it is their "mobile" view. ( Screen Shot Attached ) I have a few ideas how you could go about fixing this - but just more of a conversation piece - have many of you ever seen such a thing - especially on a portal so big? Meta data & xml sitemaps for mobile sites when using rel="canonical"/rel="alternate" annotations
When using rel="canonical" and rel="alternate" annotations between mobile and desktop sites (rel="canonical" on mobile, pointing to desktop, and rel="alternate" on desktop pointing to mobile), what are everyone's thoughts on using meta data on the mobile site? Is it necessary? And also, what is the common consensus on using a separate mobile xml sitemap?

Rel = Canonical in Blog Posting
Hello, I keep coming back to rel=canonical issues! I noticed when I "view pagesource" that my drupal blog posting automatically creates link rel="canonical" href="/sample-blog-title" /< pattern (with the > reversed) in the source code. I'm getting a lot of Rel=Canonical warnings and double content warnings from Seomoz so I've been trying to insert link rel="canonical" href="http://www.example.com/blog/my-awesome-blog-post"< but the page won't retain the code for some reason. I'm entering the code in Plain Text, but saving the document as Full HTML. Is there a better piece of code I can put in to demonstrate that the original blog page is the original source? Thanks!

I cannot find a way to implement to the 2 Link method as shown in this post: http://searchengineland.com/the-definitive-guide-to-google-authorship-markup-123218
Did Google stop offering the 2 link method of verification for Authorship? See this post below: http://searchengineland.com/the-definitive-guide-to-google-authorship-markup-123218 And see this: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/using-passive-link-building-to-build-links-with-no-budget In both articles the authors talk about how to set up Authorship snippets for posts on blogs where they have no bio page and no email verification just by linking directly from the content to their Google+ profile and then by linking the from the the Google+ profile page (in the Contributor to section) to the blog home page. But this does not work no matter how many ways I trie it. Did Google stop offering this method?

To 301 redirect or not to 301 redirect? duplicate content problem www.domain.com and www.domain.com/en/
Hello, If your website is getting flagged for duplicate content from your main domain www.domain.com and your multilingual english domain www.domain.com/en/ is it wise to 301 redirect the english multilingual website to the main site? Please advise. We've recently installed the joomish component to one of our joomla websites in an effort to streamline a spanish translation of the website. The translation was a success and the new spanish webpages were indexed but unfortunately one of the web developers enabled the english part of the component and some english webpages were also indexed under the multilingual english domain www.domain.com/en/ and that flagged us for duplicate content. I added a 301 redirect to redirect all visitors from the www.domain/en/ webpages to the main www.domain.com/ webpages. But is that the proper way of handling this problem? Please advise.

Www or not www base url
Here is the situation. Developer custom coded a magento commerce shop for a seo client and is having problems adding www to the URL without breaking the site. They wont be able to get this completed until a couple months down the road. We are starting monthly SEO this June. Most directories and websites link to the www version of a site not the non www. What should I expect since we are ranking for the non-www and linking to the www version. In web master tools i'm telling google to display the URL as www.

Unknown "/" added causing 404 error
I have four 404 url redirect errors that I cannot sort out. It tells me the referring url: | www.homedestination.com/calculator-mortgage-resources.html has a "/" on the end. cannot find: | www.homedestination.com/calculator-mortgage-resources.html | I cannot figure out where this referring url is; as it is in the root file without a "/" on the end. Could it be on a page somewhere? All my Dreamweaver page link tests come back ok. I must be missing something simple and would value help for others who may spot it? Thanks! |
