Redirecting a previously expired domain - any SEO benefits?
-
Is there any SEO benefits from registering a previously expired domain name that is still linked to form an authorative source and 301 redirecting it to another site on a similar subject?
Obviously first benefit is giving users who are clicking on the link to be sent to a site on a similar subject that just to a dead link.

Hi Wardy,
Usually, there would be value to redirect an expired domain, but it depends on the age, what the domain previously held, and whether there is revelance to your new domain. With a 301 redirect, any "link juice" (hate the term, but it's got to be used!) will be passed down the line to your new site, so as long as the link and old domain is valuable, the answer is yes, there would be some slight benefit.
Also, check in "open site explorer" to see if there are any other valuable links to your old domain. If there are several valuable links, buy the domain and redirect before someone else buys it.
If there's just the one valuable link, write to the site and ask them to amend the destination URL.
Hope that helps.
Matt

I wonder what it takes to capture twitter as a backlink. We have a twitter account @idyllicsoftware which never occurs in open site explorer. Also it never shows newer back links. Could you suggest how to use it better?

.com links for .co.uk domains
Hi, I was wondering whether .com links from the US for .co.uk domains increase the search engine visibility of .co.uk domain in the UK just as much as .co.uk links for .co.uk domains (assuming they are all top quality content links)? (Context: I have heard that it does from someone who should know, but I would like to double check on that) If half of the backlinks for a .co.uk domain are from .com domains in the US is this a dangerous pattern Google would pick up on?

Best SEO Bang For Buck from $1000
I'm a developer with little SEO / Marketing skills. I've recently redesigned my site ( www.habitmix.com ), I think the site is great but it doesn't get a lot of organic search traffic (about 30 visits a day). I have $1000 available to spend in next couple of weeks and am wondering what the best way to use the money would be. I realize SEO is a long term process not a one time job, and I realize $1000 isn't a big budget. So far I am considering : Finding someone on ODesk to create blog content, say a post a day for a month Finding an SEO company to analyse the site and create a link building strategy for me to execute. Surely there are a lot of other ways I could spend my $1000 that would help grow organic traffic. Any suggestions appreciated. Cheers Sam
