Redirecting Domains
-
Hi Everybody,
My clients owns a lot of domains related to his website.
I redirected them to the website.
So his website is: www.vallnord.com
but if you type Vallnordski, vallnordsnow, etc etc they will go to the website, but they will not change the url and will keep vallnordski, vallnordsnow instead of going to vallnord.com
Not very clear actually, so if you have 20 seconds to type them you will see it very clear.
I was wondering if this was a good practice or it is better to actually redirect someone completely (If they type vallnordski.com take them to vallnord.com)?
Is redirecting a good SEO practice?
Regards,
Guido.

Hi Guido,
It seems none of the domains you mentioned are now working. You should return everything to the way it was before so that your client's sites are operable and then we can start over to resolve your problem.
Incidentally, what just happened sounds slightly familiar to me. Are you using an Apache server?

Sorry - you most probably did it right, but just to confirm - did you put it after RewriteBase / etc.? Can you paste the whole mod_rewrite block here?
-
I just did it. but now if I type vallnordski.com I get a 500 server internal error.
I added only:
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www.vallnord.com$ [NC] [AND]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^(.).vallnord.com$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.)$ http://www.vallnord.com/$1 [R=301,L]At the beggining of the mod rewrite section
Any idea why this might not work?
Thanks!

Yes - you need the 301 redirect - to do it - open or create the .htaccess file in the root of your site and type the following within the mod_rewrite section (if you already have one or if not then create one like so):
<ifmodule mod_rewrite.c="">Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine on
RewriteBase /RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www.vallnord.com$ [NC] [AND]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^(.).vallnord.com$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.)$ http://www.vallnord.com/$1 [R=301,L]</ifmodule>This way any domain that is now www.vallnord.com will be automatically redirected to it (permanently as 301).
To answer your question in full - yes - it is a good practice to redirect someone - you should always try to do your SEO campaign pointing to just one domain - even if you have a number of different ones pointing to it - as long as you use permanent redirection (301) you'll be fine.
I hope this helps you solve the problem.

if i am not wrong you should use a 301 Redirect

We switched the domain from www.blog.domain.com to domain.com/blog.
We switched the domain from www.blog.domain.com to domain.com/blog. This was done with the purpose of gaining backlinks to our main website as well along with to our blog. This set us very low in organic traffic and not to mention, lost the backlinks. For anything, they are being redirected to 301 code. Kindly suggest changes to bring back all the traffic.

302 Redirect Question

Missing 301 redirects
I just had a developer friend call me in a panic, because they had gone live with a new site and found out (the hard way) that they had missed some pages on their 301 redirects. So the pages are appearing in Google but serving 404s. Ouch! So their question was: other than running a report for 404 errors in something like Screaming Frog, is there a way to hunt down ONLY pages serving 404s, then export to CSV so they can be redirected? Anyone got any tricks up their sleeve?

SSL redirect issue
Hi guys, I have a site that has some internal pages with SSL. Recently i noticed that if i put https://mydomain.com, this URL is accessible but all the design is messed up. My site is on wordpress and i use "redirection" plugin for all the 301 redirect. So i decided to add a new 301 redirect from https://mydomain.com to my actual URL version of home page http://mydomain.com. After doing that, my home page doesn't load at all. Does anybody know what happens? Thank you for advice!

301 redirect chains
Hi everyone, I've had my site for a while now and have changed the structure a number of times. I'm confident my 301's work well and am not concerned about dead ends on my site. My question is, is there a way to find 301 redirect chains? i.e. can I export my link data from webmaster tools and run it through some software that tells me how many steps my 301's are taking to get to the final page? I don't know for sure that there are long 301 chains in my link structure, but I have a suspicion and it's very hard to check by going through them manually. Thanks in advance Will

Domain Forwarding Implications
Hi, I am working with a client who is planning to rebrand the company and set up a new domain. What is the best way to maximize and pass the authority from the existing sites (there are 2)? Each site already has many inbound links and have been around for a while. Should I set up 301 redirects for all of the pages? Should I set up domain forwarding? If I do this, what are the implications from an SEO perspective? Please advise. Thank you, Erin

301 for old domain to new domain - Joomla plugin or cpanel?
A client changed domains and both are being indexed. There are thousands of content pages. I can install a 301 redirect Joomla plugin and configure it so that each page redirects to the new domain. I have a feeling I will need to manual set every page. OR I can create a domain level redirect setting in cpanel using wildcards. I think this will automatically pass every old URL to the new URL. Which is the better approach? The cpanel option sounds like less work.

Old Domain - What to do?
A client recently bought an older domain that is keyword-rich to an aspect of his company. The main website has both e-commerce and call-to-action elements. Our team is split on whether or not to create a micro-site on that domain focused on that aspect of the work that he does or to simply redirect the old domain to his main website. I have not had the opportunity to look at the link profile of the recently acquired domain nor do I have any idea of how many times it's changed hands (which would seem to now be a possible indicator of doorway pages). If any clarification would help, please let me know and I'll do my best to answer.
