Optimizing Dynamic landing pages in specific Geo-Locations
-
I have a website that has a a dynamic URl for individual dealer landing pages - this works based on the geo-location tool on the site. When a user comes it it will recognize their location based on IP address then present the appropriate content based on zip code logic.
Example URL: http://www.3mwater.com/?___store=dealer
Example URL: http://www.3mwater.com/dealer/
Question: How can I best optimize each individual page for each individual dealer when the URL stays static regardless of dealer?
Thank you!

Hi Yanez,
I have some concerns about the dynamic scenario and how it relates to Local Search. I actually spoke about this with Darren Shaw of WhiteSpark and he gave me permission to quote him on this:
If set up properly, I think it can be fine for the search engines:
BAD: domain.com/locations.php > detects IP and loads the location info into the page.OK: domain.com/locations.php > detects IP and 301 redirects to the correct location page like /denver.php. It's ok, as long as there is a crawlable list of all location pages on the site.
BEST: domain.com/locations.php > detects googlebot, and if not googlebot, detects IP and 301 redirects to the correct location page like /denver.php. It's ok, as long as there is a crawlable list of all location pages on the site. This could be called cloaking, but it's actually not a concern to the engines. There are tons of examples of sites using cloaking for good, not evil, and Google is fine with it. Google has no problem with cloaking when it benefits the user and isn't used to serve different content to the engines that a user would never see.
Hope this helps!
Miriam

Noindex PPC landing pages or optimise for SEO?
Organic seems to be down YoY on one of the categories of a large ecommerce website that I work on. This particular category has multiple landing pages set up for PPC consisting of filtered products. So these landing pages are prone to duplicate content due to the products listed. e.g. Blue Thingamajigs White Thingamajigs Black Thingamajigs High Gloss Thingamajigs Oak Thingamajigs Glass Thingamajigs etc These landing pages do well for PPC, but are nowhere to be seen in organic (51+). The main category page however ranks quite well for quite a variety of root and longtail keywords, though not as well as it used to. For example, it does rank for "thingamajigs", "white thingamajigs", "white gloss thingamajigs" and "white gloss thingamajigs with cherries on top". Would it benefit the main category page if the PPC landing pages were noindexed? Or, despite Google's preference for the main category, work on further optimising the landing pages for SEO? Or is there another solution that I'm completely overlooking? (It is a Friday afternoon after all...)

Similar pages on a site
Hi I think it was at BrightonSEO where PI DataMetrics were talking about similar pages on a website can cause rankings to drop for your main page. This has got me thinking. if we have a category about jumpers so: example.com/jumpers but then our blog has a category about jumpers, where we write all about jumpers etc which creates a category page example.com/blog/category/jumpers, so these blog category pages have no index put on them to stop them ranking in Google? Thanks in Advance for any tips. Andy

Has Google stopped rendering author snippets on SERP pages if the author's G+ page is not actively updated?
Working with a site that has multiple authors and author microformat enabled. The image is rendering for some authors on SERP page and not for others. Difference seems to be having an updated G+ page and not having a constantly updating G+ page. any thoughts?

Google Penguin - Target Landing Page
Hello, One of our sites have been hit by the first penguin update back in April and ever since then we have been removing links and submitting reconsideration requests... It only seems to have affected our home page as some of our internal landing pages are still ranking OK in the SERPS #1 / #2. I'm just wondering if we created a landing page for this keyword and drove high quality / relevant links to this landing page could we get it to rank higher than our homepage even though our Homepage is on the 5th page.Hope the above make sense. Has anybody had any joy with this?

Is my home page over optimized for this key word?
I've been working for a couple of months not to try and get my site optimized for the key word "kayak fishing". I haven't done any black hat linking or anything and my site had disappeared passed page 76 on Google United States... Did I over optimize things? I get an A for the onpage reports from SEOMOZ. site: www.yakangler.com Keyword: Kayak Fishing
