404 appearing in Sitelinks
-
I am little embarresed to say that the custom 404 page is appearing in a client's Sitelinks for their brand name search term.
I have demoted this page from Sitelinks for the brand term but it still appears
What is the best practise for a custom 404 page appearing in a sitemap and/or being blocked by robots.txt?
Thanks

Thanks Tim, great shout. Just checked and you were right. Bit slap on the wrists all round.
Thanks again!

Just thinking - does the 404 page return a correct 404 response in the header? i.e. make sure it's not returning a 200 ("this is a legit page") response

What I mean to say is that within a few days after the 301 is set, Google will either update the URL or if they find a better page that should be the site-link instead of the new 301'd URL, it will update. It's just sort of seemless. Did that a couple months ago and worked like a charm.

Thanks Nakul - but the issue is with the 404 page itself being indexed (as it appears in the sitemap), then this page being used as one of the sitelinks for a brand search term.
I agree 301 should be put in place for any 404s seen on the site

The best best in my opinion would be to do a 301 redirect for the 404 URL to the correct/updated page if you have one.

Server return 404 and 200 status
Dear All,
Technical SEO | | omverma
We have a website where we are showing some products. Many times it happens when we remove any product and add that again later. In our site, we have product list page and detail page. So if any product get deleted and client hits the detail page with deleted product url, then we are returning 404. Next time when that product will be available our server will return 200. I have two questions : 1. Is is right way to deal with deleted product ? 2. After deploying it, we observed that our keywords ranking is going down, is that really affect ? Thanks,

600+ 404 Errors: Best Practice for Redirects?
Hi All, I've just checked my GWMT profile for one of my client's sites and found that there are currently over 600 404 Error notifications! This is not that surprising given that we very recently redesigned and launched their new corporate site, which previously had a ton of "junk" legacy pages. I was wondering if it would work in terms of efficient SEO to simply apply a 301 redirect from the 404 page to our root to solve this issue? If not what would be a good solution? Thanks in advance for all your great advice!

No Search Results Found - Should this return status code 404?
A question came up today on how to correctly serve the right status code on pages where no search results are found. I did a couple searches on some major eccomerce and news sites and they were ALL serving status code 200 for No Search Results Found http://www.zappos.com/dsfasdgasdgadsg http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=sdafasdklgjasdklgjsjdjkl http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trksid=p5197.m570.l1313&_nkw=dfjakljgdkslagklasd&_sacat=0 http://www.cnn.com/search/?query=sdgadgdsagas&x=0&y=0&primaryType=mixed&sortBy=date&intl=false http://www.seomoz.org/pages/search_results?q=sdagasdgasdgasg I thought I read somewhere were it was recommended to serve a status code 404 on these types of pages. Based on what I found above, all sites were serving a 200, so it appears this may not be the best practice. Any thoughts?

301 on ALL 404 for Pagerank Recovery, bad idea?
Its a bad idea to do a 301 to the home page of the site on all 404 pages as a way of pagerank recovery? If so, why? Thanks,
