It's not a 1:1 relationship. My site can have three backlinks from moz.com, but that only counts as one linking root domain (since the domain for each of those backlinks is moz.com). Does that help?

Hi Doug! Thanks for your info. Is this also considered a "backlink"? Or is there a difference between the two?

              Hi Doug and all,

I know this maybe a bit late and to be honest, opening an open ended question, but "what factors do you think are involved in some links being better than others?"

I would say things such as Page Authority, Domain Authority and SEO friendly content would all play a part, for a number of my retail clients, I know that Google Merchant compliance also helps, is there anything else you, or any other fellow MOZ'ers may can think of ?

Just trying to get some more ideas and also spark some productive convo !

              Thanks,

              Peter.

                Hi Jennifer,

This is an older question, and it's probably best in this case to start a new thread with your question so it gets a little more visibility. Thanks!

a lot of my 'crawl errors' (such as duplicate title) are for pages that have only 1 linking root domain. Does that mean that it is only linked from my domain?

                  (I'm trying to determine if it is worthwhile to spend time fixing these duplicate title errors - they aren't real site pages and they shouldn't be displayed or linked anywhere, I'm not even sure why or how they are being crawled. it's basically like a real site page but with an ID number appearing in the URL, but on the real site that ID number does not appear);

                  any info is much apprececiated!

Hi Vasil, the number of linking root domains (and all of the link metrics) comes from the Mozscape (previously known as linkscape) index which is usually updated each month. It's the same index used by Open Site Explorer.

You can find more about the update timetable here:

                        https://seomoz.zendesk.com/entries/345964-linkscape-update-schedule

                        Hope this helps!

I have one question regarding the data the Keyword Difficulty Report shows. How does it get updated? I mean how often, because for my website I can see a low number of Linking Root Domains, which does not correspond to the real number of domains linking to my website. Thanks in advance.

Hi Mark, I'd be wary of making assumptions based on just one (or two) metrics.

Remember it's not just the number of links, but the link equity of the links too. All things being equal, one site's page with a reasonable number of links from low value blogs etc may be outranked by another site's page that has just a couple of links from authoritative site but even then this is massively oversimplifying things.

Page linking root domains are worth more than domain linking root domains, but this is normally off set by the quantity of domain links vs the one or two a page may get.

By the time you throw in page relevance, anchor text, freshness, social, etc thing get more than a little fuzzy!

Moz's Keyword Difficulty & SERP analysis tool does a good job of laying out all the relative strengths and weaknesses:

In a nutshell, it's the number of other sites that link to your page/site. You can find more info here:

                              https://moz.com/help/guides/moz-pro-overview/links/competitive-metrics

Number of linking root domains (# of linking root domains) includes only the number of unique root domains linking. Two links from the same website would only be counted as one linking root domain.

Engineers at SEOmoz have found that "# of linking root domains" is much more highly correlated to real rankings than "# of links".

Generally the more "connected" your page is to the the greater the authority the search engines will consider your site to have.  Not all links are equal though, and there are other factors involved...

                              Hope this helps.

Domain still not being found in search

Hi guys, I've been handed a client who needs some seo work. I've tweaked one of their pages to focus on a chosen keywords about 4 months back but still the site is not even visible using the new Domain Analysis tool from moz and it still won't rank at all for the keywords. Am I missing something here? Is there something blocking the SERP from listing the website? I've ran a site: search on Google and it returns 283 results on the website. It's puzzling me as there clearly is something stopping it from being ranked. The domain name in question is: https://cloud9inecommunications.co.uk Thanks in advance.

Should I set blog category/tag pages as "noindex"? If so, how do I prevent "meta noindex" Moz crawl errors for those pages?

From what I can tell, SEO experts recommend setting blog category and tag pages (ie. "http://site.com/blog/tag/some-product") as "noindex, follow" in order to keep the page quality of indexable pages high. However, I just received a slew of critical crawl warnings from Moz for having these pages set to "noindex." Should the pages be indexed? If not, why am I receiving critical crawl warnings from Moz and how do I prevent this?

I need to find the quickest and best tool to do this with. Any suggestions would be great.

Automatically Check List of Sites For Links To Specific Domain

Hi all, Can anyone recommend a tool that will allow me to put in a list of about 200 domains that are then checked for a link back to a specific domain? I know I can do various link searches and use Google site: command on a site by site basis, but it would be much quicker if there was a tool that could take the list of domains I am expecting a link  on and then find if that link exists and if so on what page etc. Hope this makes sense  otherwise I have to spend a day doing it by hand - not fun! Thanks,
                                charles.

How is domain authority related to country top level domains?

I've noticed that for some country top level domains (tld) the domain authority returned by open site explorer is based on the domain that has been registered within the tld. For example, domainname.co.uk provides a domain authority specific to the domain. However, for some other country top level domains, this does not appear to be the case.  Examples I have found include: domainname.co.nr domainname.co.pt domainname.co.ee For these top level domains the domain authority seems to be the same for every domainname, seemingly implying the domain authority is for the top level domain itself rather than for the domain. Is this a common situation for many country top level domains, so that what I see going in here is the tip of a large iceberg, or does this situation just apply to a very isolated set of country top level domains?

TLD vs Sub Domain in Regards to Domain Authority

I have always been under the impression that top level (or root) domains can hold different domain authority than that of a sub domain. Meaning that sub domain's and TLD can hold different ranks and strength in search engine result pages. Is this a correct or just an assumption? If so when i add a root domain and subdomain into the campaign manager i get back the same link information and domain authority? www.datalogic.com
www.automation.datalogic.com Have I made an incorrect assumption or is this an issue with the SEOMoz campaign manager?
