How to proceed on this 404 situation

Hi folks,
I have a website (www.mysite.com) where I can't host a 404 page inside the subdomain www because a CMS issue.
In order to provide a 404 page, I can create a subdomain like “404.mysite.com” that returns 404 and then if I find that a page does not exist I can redirect it to 404.mysite.com.
My question is: should I redirect as 301 or 302? Does it have any difference?

If you are taking the time to redirect to a 404 page, I would suggest using a 301 to a page that is active. Instead of wasting the link juice on a 404 page, you can pass it on to something that is active and useful to your visitor (even a "help" page)
The key here is to find a new page that is at least somewhat connected to what was on the dead link's URL.

Fake 404 Issue
Hello, I just had a problem my site started showing up 404 issues for all my wordpress pages and post but visually the page was loading with content but yet all pages and software including google WMT was showing the 404 issue. I never found the issue but was able to move the site into a new hosting and restore from a backup and it work. Google found the issue on Jan 27th and they remove all the pages with 404 from the index and I lost most of my top ranking I have since fix the issue and was wondering if google would restore my ranking in such a case? HTML snapshot creating soft 404
Has anyone any experience with HTML snapshots? We have a recruitment client that has HTML snapshots against all job pages as they are built with AJAX. The pages naturally die after around four weeks (the job vacancy runs out) and whilst the AJAX version of the page hard 404s, the HTML snapshot version returns a soft 404. How can we get it to mirror the dead page with 404 status?

WebMaster Tools keeps showing old 404 error but doesn't show a "Linked From" url. Why is that?
Hello Moz Community. I have a question about 404 crawl errors in WebmasterTools, a while ago we had an internal linking problem regarding some links formed in a wrong way (a loop was making links on the fly), this error was identified and fixed back then but before it was fixed google got to index lots of those malformed pages. Recently we see in our WebMaster account that some of this links still appearing as 404 but we currently don't have that issue or any internal link pointing to any of those URLs and what confuses us even more is that WebMaster doesn't show anything in the "Linked From" tab where it usually does for this type of errors, so we are wondering what this means, could be that they still in google's cache or memory? we are not really sure. If anyone has an idea of what this errors showing up now means we would really appreciate the help. Thanks. jZVh7zt.png

405 HTTP Status instead of 404
Hi We need to block some www1-pages from being indexed. Now IT has resolved this but pages like http://www1.swisscom.ch/fr/business/pme.html return a 405 status instead of a 404. The pages are currently still indexed in Google. Must the status be changed to 404 or should I just wait and see if Google de-indexes them anyhow?

Pages Linking to Sites that Return 404 Error
We have just a few 404 errors on our site. Is there any way to figure out which pages are linking to the pages that create 404 errors? I would rather fix the links than create new 301 redirects. Thanks!

Help needed regarding managing client expectations - tricky situation
I will try to explain the scenario as quickly as possible and my hope is that someone can share their opinion on how they would move forward. I was introduced to a local business owner who said he wanted help with SEO. Upon looking at his current online marketing, I saw he had 2 current sites promoting the same local business (martial arts instruction / classes). Why he had two sites? He said it made it easier for him to dominate in Google. Red Flag #1. Upon doing a quick site audit, I found a ton of problems with the existing site. Black text on a black background, keyword stuffing in title tags, non-canonicalization, no xml sitemap, no Google analytics installed...on and on. In addition, the site did not really have a good look to it graphically. I told him that I recommend a fresh new site using Wordpress and that we should build the content with the focus on explaining the benefits of the classes. He agreed and we began development of a new Wordpress site from the ground up. We built a sitemap, wireframe, nice design, etc. The site looks much better and we got rid of a lot of the technical problems with the site. The problem is this: Even though the new site is technically better based on On Page analysis, it is not showing up anywhere in the Top for localized keywords. The site has been live for about 2 1/2 months (March 1). I made the mistake of telling him that in a lot of cases in the past, I was able to build a new site for other clients that would rank well for localized searches based on On Page optimization alone. This is not happening for him with the new site. The new domain is relatively new (less than a year old) and has no links at all at this point. I recommended that we do a 301 redirect from his existing domain to the new one but he is skeptical and I almost can't blame him. The client is not paying me to do any SEO. The contract was to build a new site that would be built with best SEO On Page practices (Title Tags, Header Tags, Meta Desc., XML Sitemap, canonicalization, etc.) I hesitate to post the links to his existing site and the new one we built but I can see where that may shed some more light on the subject. If interested in taking a look, please send me a message. I guess the two questions are this: 1. Is it reasonable for a site to rank well for a localized non-competitive term based on A scores of on page analysis? 2. What harm or foul is there in doing a 301 redirect from the old domain to the new one and then reverting back if he decides that the move hurt his rankings more than helped? Thanks.

I am using SEOmoz pro software and my blog tags are bringing up 404 errors.
After checking they do bring back a 404 page, so i am wondering what to do. Do i remove all the blog tags? We use a Drupal cms system.

404 Errors in Google Webmaster Tools
Hello, Google webmaster tools is returning our URLs as 404 errors: http://www.celebritynetworth.com/watch/D5GrrPEN9Oc/tom-mccarthy-floating/ When we enter the URL into the browser it loads the page just fine. Is there a way to determine why Google Webmaster Tools is returning a 404 error when the link loads perfectly fine in a browser? Thanks, Alex
