Implementing calculator to attract embed links

Hi all, New to SEO Moz and this is my first question... I have a site that I am writing a 'widget' calculator for with the idea that the user can embed the results of the calculation on their website / blog.
I currently convert the calculation html to an image and save it on the server and then also display the code for them to embed the image (including a text link back to my site). In order to try and get as many people to embed the results on their site I am not asking them to login / register on the site before they get access to the embed code.

Is no login / registration the correct way to go? It means I won't be able to track if people have copied the image without including the text link.

Is saving the output as an image the best way to enable the user to embed the content on their site and provide me with a link? The only alternative I can think of is to give them the html in an IFRAME code to embed it but the IFRAME would have to rank to pass on on the link back to our site.

As well as giving an embed option I am also giving a 'link to these results' option in the format:
http://mydomain.com/calculator/result.aspx?ID=20
I am doing this with the result ID in the querystring) so that instead of having (hopefully) hundreds of links each pointing to a page with one incoming link I would have one page with hundreds of links pointing at it and use a canonical tag to state that all these different results should be indexed as
/calculator/result.aspxDoes this sound like the best way to do it? Is it ok to use the canonical tag even though the results / page content will be different for each querystring variation?

I would stick with the image embed option and live with the fact that not everyone will link. I'd rather have more people posting my advert.... sorry, widget on their site that included some without links than I would have less people using it. The vast majority of people will take the easy way anyway.
I'm not sure that adding a registration would really help anyway.
What I would say is be careful not to "over optimise" your anchor text doing this. It is surprisingly easy to skew your anchor text in a dangerous direction with a good widget campaign. You could even consider mixing up the anchor text that you offer them as part of the widget generation, but generally I would err towards brand over keyword.

Using sitewide links to improve link profile?
Hi Guys... When I look at my competitor's link profile, they often have thousands of backlinks. For example, one of our main competitor, he got 3,400 backlinks in total but only 80 referring domains. When I look at my link profile, I have around 50-60 referring domains, but hardly 80 backlinks. My question is, is it okay to get a few sitewide links (no-follow of course!) to get to the thousands backlinks? Or I will be able to achieve top rankings with my current link profile? Thanks!!

Which Links to Disavow!
We just took over SEO for a new client who is being penalized for a bad link profile. They've asked Google to reconsider multiple times, and Google still claims that the links are bad. Because of this, and because I don't have direct access (logins, etc.) to what the former SEO did, I am considering using the disavow links tool. The most obvious links to disavow are a group of almost 1000 links that come from the same forum. However, when viewing the links on this forum they actually seem natural. People are reviewing the product (ipod cases), both negatively and positively. While this could have been an SEO tactic for link building, I don't want to disavow these links if they're not the problem, even though this domain is the source of almost all the low-quality links. Another site that has more than 200 links is Askives. Do any of you have experience with links from Askives, or removing these links? Thanks again!

Disavow and link analysis
I am trying to work up a list of Domains to disavow from old SEO black hat (long time ago) and I think some recent bad SEO against the site. I found a few good articles here and started the process. Very daunting even on a site that never had a lot of link work done on it. One particular issue has my attention and need advice on what to do with it. I find 100s of backlinks that all resolve to the same IP 72.215.225.9 . Has anyone else seen this one. These are sites such as mengems.com or http://www.downey-realestate.com . I am using NetPeak Checker to grab stats on the backlinks after gathering backlinks for 5 different sites. These site all seem to come from Majesticseo and sure enough if I ping any of them they return 72.215.225.9 on at first and then go not found. They return a 200 in NetPeak . I was hoping not open thousands of backlinks to see if they existing before I create my Disavow list. Couple of questions. 1. Any harm in putting these on the disavow if in fact they really don't exist anymore? Do the disavow police not like your list being longer than it needs to be ? I am leaning to just leaving all of them off my list. Seems I read something that says dont ask google to disavow something that no longer exists because they are not penalizing you for it. 2. If I start with the most egregious Bad and ex-black hat domains and submit them, wait 3 weeks and the Penguin hit rankings do not recover at all then how to add to the list. Do I leave all the original disavows on the list, add to it and resubmit ? 3. My first thought was to simple send a list of all domain that have no Google indexed pages regardless of return status code. Basicly saying please clean the slate of this crap.....thoughts on this? I'm doing some SEO for small niche service sites...and aside from niche directories and some light article marketing and local search directories (yelp, etc) there really isn't a budget for content generation. I really only have a budget for profile/submission links. What are some sites where you can quite easily fill out a personal profile with an anchor text variable link that may not be THAT juicy but will stick (i.e. not a spam/fake profile type of link, but something like Linkedin). I'll start with giving away 1 www.istockphoto.com Any others that aren't obvious?
