Meta description Tag who should it be used and what should it describe?
-
Hi
when using the meta description tag how is it best used?
what should it describe? should it describe the topic or the services offered i.e should it be a sales message for the services.
For example: a page that promotes the benefits of acupuncture whilst pregnant should it describe the page content or the service provided?
i.e. acupuncture for pregnancy in Chester or acupuncture can benefit pregnancy because....
thanks

I would use the meta description tag synergistically with the intent of the page.
if the audience I was trying to reach was local the keyword phrase I'm optimizing for might be "Acupuncture for pregnancy in Chester" or if I wanted traffic from all over it might be "Benefits of Acupuncture during preganancy".
Let's assume local. In that case my title tag might be...
<title>Acupuncture for Pregnancy Chester | Company Name</title>
Of course, I'd include the relevant terms in my H1 tag, again in my content (bolded) with great, relevant copy.
(PS - I didn't count my characters for the title or meta description - remember to stay within the character limit recommendations)
Basically the content of the title tag, meta description, H1, bold and content should flow from your keyword research and intended audience.
That's my take on it,
Mark

Description of the website, not the subject the website is about.
You have 160 characters max, so you need to get the message across within that, the message should aim to increase the click through rate.
For example: Professional and affordable acupuncture services for pregnant women in Chester.
Or something like that.

How to use Rich Snippets?
Hi there! I have been hearing a lot about Rich Snippets lately but I don't really know how they work. Are they a very important factor to consider for SEO? I would love to know your thoughts about this. Thanks!

Do I need to add the actual language for meta tags and description for different languages? cited for duplicate content for different language
Hi, I am fairly new to SEO and this community so pardon my questions. We recently launched on our drupal site mandarin language version for the entire site. And when i do the crawl site, i get duplicate content for the pages that are in mandarin. Is this a problem or can i ignore this? Should i make different page titles for the different languages? Also, for the metatag and descriptions, would it better in the native language for google to search for? thanks in advance.

Displaying Long Product Descriptions on Mobile
Hello, One of our clients has a website which sells health products and supplements. All of the products have detailed descriptions that include ingredients information, usage, supplements facts, detailed information on how the products affect you, a detailed guarantee and FAQs. Our client would like to display a more synthesised product description on mobile devices. This would be a shortened description which would make it easier for people to understand what the benefits of the products are. At the moment we still have the previously developed 'Read Product Description' button that expands and reveals more text. We need to remove this and display a different shortened description but still follow Google's best practices. If the content on the mobile differs from the website, will it have a detrimental effect on the website's ranking in Google? If this is so, we face a barrier when trying to create a summarised version of the website for mobiles. Had anyone had a similar experience? If so, please advise on what the best approach would be for this to maintain a high ranking in Google, but display differing content across platforms. Much appreciated,

Tools to test meta descriptions?
Hey does anyone know of any tools which can test your meta descriptions against competitors meta descriptions for specific keyword terms. I know one tool called SERP Turkey which uses mechanical turk, i was wondering if there is any others on the market? Even a tool which can automatically score your meta description against others on the SERP results page. E..g optimised, keyword, call to action, etc. Cheers, Chris

Can I use rel=canonical and then remove it?
Hi all! I run a ticketing site and I am considering using rel=canonical temporary. In Europe, when someone is looking for tickets for a soccer game, they look for them differently if the game is played in one city or in another city. I.e.: "liverpool arsenal tickets" - game played in the 1st leg in 2012 "arsenal liverpool tickets - game played in the 2nd leg in 2013 We have two different events, with two different unique texts but sometimes Google chooses the one in 2013 one before the closest one, especially for queries without dates or years. I don't want to remove the second game from our site - exceptionally some people can broswer our website and buy tickets with months in advance. So I am considering place a rel=canonical in the game played in 2013 poiting to the game played in a few weeks. After that, I would remove it. Would that make any sense? Thanks!

Rel Alternate tag and canonical tag implementation question
Hello, I have a question about the correct way to implement the canoncial and alternate tags for a site supporting multiple languages and markets. Here's our setup. We have 3 sites, each serving a specific region, and each available in 3 languages. www.example.com : serves the US, default language is English www.example.ca : serves Canada, default language is English www.example.com.mx : serves Mexico, default language is Spanish In addition, each sites can be viewed in English, French or Spanish, by adding a language specific sub-directory prefix ( /fr , /en, /es). The implementation of the alternate tag is fairly straightforward. For the homepage, on www.example.com, it would be: -MX” href=“http://www.example.com.mx/index.html” /> -MX” href=”http://www.example.com.mx/fr/index.html“ />

-MX” href=”http://www.example.com.mx/en/index.html“ />
-US” href=”http://www.example.com/fr/index.html” />
-US” href=”http://www.example.com/es/index.html“ />
-CA” href=”http://www.example.ca/fr/index.html” />
-CA” href=”http://www.example.ca/index.html” />
-CA” href=”http://www.example.ca/es/index.html” /> My question is about the implementation of the canonical tag. Currently, each domain has its own canonical tag, as follows: rel="canonical" href="http://www.example.com/index.html"> <link rel="canonical" href="http: www.example.ca="" index.html"=""></link rel="canonical" href="http:>
<link rel="canonical" href="http: www.example.com.mx="" index.html"=""></link rel="canonical" href="http:> I am now wondering is I should set the canonical tag for all my domains to: <link rel="canonical" href="http: www.example.com="" index.html"=""></link rel="canonical" href="http:> This is what seems to be suggested on this example from the Google help center. http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=189077 What do you think?0 -
Has Anyone Used Boostability?
Looking into Boostabilty as an option for doing SEO for our clients, will still keep SEOmoz and will still be doing SEO for our own company. Has anyone used it or heard things about it? I am very skeptical when it comes to outsourcing SEO and when it comes to any kind of automated SEO but thought I'd ask if anyone had thoughts on it. Thanks, Holly
