Google Rankings Jumping Around
-
Hi,
Since January, the Google rankings for one of our sites has been jumping around. Sometimes it's on page 1, then it disappears and comes back around 1 month later.
It's strange because it's only a small section of the site that it's happening to. Every other section of the site is doing really well.
Just wondered if anyone else is having this problem, or has had it and can suggest any fixes.
There are no technical issues, no changes have been made to the site, all I can think is it's Google messing around with their algorithm?
Any help or advice would be much appreciated.
Karen

Hmmm... that is strange, especially if you haven't pushed any link-building to that section. Unfortunately, the duplicate content aspects are really tough to speak to without seeing the site/page. One easy spot-check I do is to take the page title of the section, let's say it's "Section Title" and search the index within your site, such as:
site:example.com intitle:"Section Title"
That will show you if copies are being indexed, and it's a really easy place to start.

Hiya,
Thanks for the response, some really interesting ideas. It looks like it's just our site that is bouncing around in the serps.
I think point 2 is probably the most likely explanation. Although the site was built with SEO in mind, so the pages are all unique and with a good amount of content, we have a few issues with trailing forward slashes, which could be creating a duplicate content problem.
Basically the site is divided up into 9 sections - 7 of those sections are fine and ranking well, but 2 of them are bouncing around. Of the 2 that are bouncing around we have done some link building for just 1 of the sections.
I'll have another dig around in webmaster tools. If you have any other ideas in the meantime they'd be much appreciated!
Thanks

Are the other rankings for that keyword(s) bouncing as well, or is it just you? If everyone is bouncing, Google could be tweaking the algorithm or the keyword could be evaluated different ways. For example, I'm seeing Google treat more keywords as having local implications (especially since "Venice"), but they seem to be fine-tuning that week to week.
If it's just you, it's probably one of two things:
(1) You're experiencing a technical issue that's impact the speed or availability of your site.
(2) You've got a very large index or some issues with duplicate content. Sometimes, I see a page get re-crawled (say, from an XML sitemap), rank well for a few days, and then drop as Google re-crawls more of the site.
(3) You're hovering on the border of a link-based penalty.
Fortunately, these are different enough that you can probably tell which one is most likely by digging into your own index and link profile, as well as Google Webmaster Tools.

Have you isolated it down to a page type, or specific urls?
If not build out an excel file with the following as columns and then pivot it out:
- keyword
- ranking url
- page type
- keyword type
- rank at date 1
- rank at date 2
- keep going as long as needed
Then pivot the above and report back

Does Google ignores page title suffix?
Hi all, It's a common practice giving the "brand name" or "brand name & primary keyword" as suffix on EVERY page title. Well then it's just we are giving "primary keyword" across all pages and we expect "homepage" to rank better for that "primary keyword". Still Google ranks the pages accordingly? How Google handles it? The default suffix with primary keyword across all pages will be ignored or devalued by Google for ranking certain pages? Or by the ranking of website improves for "primary keyword" just because it has been added to all page titles?

Increase in impressions reported by Google Analytics
Because Universal Analytics (and Google Webmaster) only stores SEO data for 3 months, I've been downloading SEO data (from the Acquisition tab of Analytics) to get a record of how impressions, clicks, CTR etc are changing in the long term (our business is seasonal, so these long-term patterns are important). Today, I downloaded data for September, and found a very large increase in the number of impressions compared to previous months. I looked back at the data for August, which I've already downloaded, and found that Analytics is now reporting much higher numbers of impressions than I have in my downloaded data. The total number of impressions has roughly doubled, and the increase for individual URLs varies, with some increasing by a factor of 10. The number of clicks has also increased, by about 15% in total. Because of the 3 month cut-off, I could only look back as far as the 11th of July, but the impressions for the end of July are also much higher than in my downloaded data. I've noticed that Analytics has changed some other details in its reporting of SEO data. For example, the impressions and clicks data is no longer rounded. Could this increase in impressions be a result of those changes? Has anyone else experienced something similar? We can go ahead and use the new data but it will throw our analysis off for past months (which have the lower numbers). If others have experienced something similar it would be good to know, so that we can adjust our historical numbers accordingly.

Deindexed from Google images Sep17th
We have a travel website that has been ranked in Google for 12-14years. The site produces original images with branding on them and have been for years ranking well. There's been no site changes. We have a Moz spamscore 1/17 and Domain Authority 59. Sep 17th all our images just disappeared from Google Image Search. Even searching for our domain with keyword photo results in nothing. I've checked our Search console and no email from Google and I see no postings on Moz and others relating to search algo changes with Images. I'm at a loss here.. does anyone have some advice?

Google Rankings Dropped in Past Few Weeks
Hi All, I work for an online appliance retailer and over the past weeks, we've seen a drop in our google SERPs. This time last year we were ranking in the top 3 for our top converting key terms, but now we are ranking towards the bottom of the first page or even on the top of the second page with the big box stores now dominating for our key terms. Needless to say traffic for these pages has dropped off considerably. We still have quite a bit of traffic coming in for other key terms, but they don't convert as well. Is anyone else seeing the same thing? If so what are you doing to combat this? Do you have any suggestions? Thank you!
