Can anyone provide any useful insights on how they use latest news items to help with SEO?

Hello,
I have heard about SEO's and PR types riding off the back of latest news items that can be tied to the products or services they are trying to promote.
Recently I read about how an SEO had distastefully written an article using the name of a famous singer who had sadly passed away and used this event as an opportunity to write about a small business models
Can anyone provide any useful AND ethical insights on how they use latest news items to help with SEO?

I will give you two examples:
One is when brad pitt and angelina jolie recently came out and said that they enjoy salsa omelets. We were able to mention that on one of our clients restaurants that serves breakfast in hollywood. ....In the process, we mentioned the salsa omelets at this restaurant. The implication was that they ate salsa omelets at this restaurant.... This was posted on the webiste, our blog and social networks. it got picked up by a number of blogs and was mentioned by a number of people, and we received some SEO and PR value for the client.
The same is true for "re-spins" of newsworthy articles that are released that are generating substantial interest. We have another client that sells ERP software. Their major competitors are SAP and Oracle and there are literally millions of people in the US that belong to a variety of ERP user groups, blogs, forums and social networks that are focused on key terms like SAP, oracle, Larry Ellison or ERP. If breaking news comes out about a big aquisition for SAP or Oracle, if we release the news in several of our PR channels and blogs and forums, we will get a fair amount of PR and SEO value because not everyone will have picked up the story yet. After a day or two, there will be no additional value because the story will be out there already.
In giving you two examples I would have to tell you that these are not the foundations for a solid SEO program. These are ancillary activities that you can use to help you generate some additional value, on top of a solid SEO on page and off page optimization campaign. They don't fit in every situation but can be effective.

I have done the whole moz open exploer and I am not understanding why my site wouldn’t have more links registering to my website.. I have lots of sites(directorys and 3rd party) with my website domain in them. The only one that is linking to my site is BBB.com and my advertsing with saint paul press. www.somerersetautodealer.com But if I have links with all kinds of automotive directories why wouldn’t they register? Ranking drop Any help please
hi i got a website www.willowstairlifts.co.uk and I am doing seo for keyword Stairlifts , it was going all good i managed to get it from page 15 to page 4 but yesterday its start going backward it jumps back from position 31 to 61 , i have been very careful in doing on page and also with my link building. I have just a few directories , bookmarks and I am targeting guest post, and i have got few links from them. i cant find anything wrong and worried, as surely it can be a penalty, is it just google dance? as i am aware google is recently doing some updates which they are denying it. hope you guys can help me , many thanks

How do you use a blog to help SEO.
Hi, So you launch a blog on your website, fill it with lots of great content and update weekly with more great content. From what I know your looking to gain 2 things! 1. Users linking back to your blog and 2. Sharing the content on social networks. Building up social lists on Twitter, Facebook, Google+ etc so when you do post something new you have a hub of users to help push your post by sharing it on social networks which should also help to generate more backlinks. Is this the main purpose of a blog for SEO? Would anything else apart from the above effect the SEO for the site? Maybe the freshness of content also has a positive impact! Also if your blog is picking up lots of links, for this example lets say 100 links a month and the rest of the site outside of the blog is picking up 10 a month will the blogs power of picking up links effect the rest of the sites rankings, would you need to anchor text link out of the posts in the blog to make the most out of it? Charity / Donation - Website and SEO
I have a prospective client looking to do SEO- they are a charity and have a fixed one time budget. (The budget is surprisingly high) They are looking to have their site ranked for "charities in (our city)" and "dental charities" and any keyword variations. Adwords shows significant search volume and ranking difficulty is moderate per SEOmoz keyword difficulty tool. On page will be fairly simple and well handled, but am looking more towards the authority and link building. I am going to tackle 3 top quality directories, Yahoo, BOTW, and Business.com (as well as DMOZ but i've never had luck). But was wondering if there were any other nationally recognized sources that mozzers know about that would be a good place to start to get some links to the site. The organization is a clinic that provides free dental work to veterans. I have never handled SEO for a charity before, and my first instinct is that getting a link to the site will be much easier to get than if I ask them to give money to the foundation, so they would be glad to do it. Any other guidance would be appreciated. And I can give more details if necessary. Any other tips and insight would be appreciated. Thank you! Ian

Are press release sites useful?
Many of my clients release newsletters and other peices of content qualify as press releases. I have been wondering if people find that the press release sites such as PRleap or PRweb are useful and worthwhile? If so, which do you feel is the best? Is there any research on this? I am planning to record my results from these sites and perhaps make a Youmoz post in the future.
