I'm having difficulties with SEOmoz Rank Tracker tool. During last month, it hasn't worked properly.
I was suggested to use "campaign based rank tracking tool"- I would like to learn if anyone has already used it?
Thanks,

Hi Sema,
I am happy to be of help. If you don't want to rely on a single tool like SEOmoz I understand I must say though I think SEOmoz is the best when it comes to this however this is my personal opinion. You may use incognito to check some things and it will work much better than if you were logged into Google or were not using incognito. However if I were to Google "pizza near me" whether or not I am using incognito I would get the closest pizza parlor to me. For instance I'm in Florida so I will obviously get different results in somebody in Chicago. Some of the tools you can use for your websites to get unbiased information are www.majesticseo.com http://www.surcentro.com http://www.semrush.com and check out the companies listed here http://www.semrush.com/partners.html
I hope this has answered your questions. If not please post again or let me know I would be happy to help you.
Sincerely,

Hi Thomas,
Thank you very much for your detailed answer. I'll try to use that tool now to rank our websites. Somehow I don't like relying on single tool. If I use google incognito how helpful or realistic my results be? Do you have any ideas on this or any more suggestions?
Thanks,
Sema

Hi Sema,
The campaign based rank tracking tool is to give you an unbiased or on tainted (by your search preferences in Google that can change what you would see as opposed to what I might see if I looked up a keyword) understanding of your true rank in Google, Bing & Yahoo. For whatever website you put in your SEOmoz campaign.. All you need to use it is your SEOmoz Pro subscription then go into http://pro.seomoz.org/campaigns or campaigns you'll see the button is the 2nd to the right when you log into SEOmoz after that go to create campaign. You will be asked to enter your URL with a subdomain (when they say subdomain they mean www.) enter it along with I believe 5 of your competitors. It is important for them to have your Google Analytics ID if you do not have Google Analytics yet or you would like to find your ID go to https://www.google.com/analytics/web/ then either sign in or sign up. Once you have done all this give SEOmoz the time to crawl your site once that is done you will have access to an amazing amount of information. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
I hope I was of help.
Sincerely,
Thomas Zickell

Best use of an old domain?
I've discovered that my clients website used to have another domain name, which they still own but don't use. It's doing OK considering its not been used for a few years - almost 6,000 backlinks showing on Majestic. So what's the best way of using this for SEO? I'm presuming some kind of redirecting? A simple redirect of everything on the domain to the new domain index page? Or going trough all the old pages and redirecting them one by one?

Mobile site not ranking
Hello, I have a m.site.com version of my original site. It is about 1/10 the size, and no matter what I do-I can't get the site to rank. I've added more pages and specified canonical etc etc. Should I add as many pages as my larger site has? Are there specific places I should be submitting this version beyond the typical? I am at a loss, so any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks! L

Ranking in Bing
My frustration with Google currently has led me to try bing out more. I don't rank as good in bing as Google, so I was wondering if anyone had any great tips of what bing looks for to rank website well? So far I can see they seem to favour keyword domains, take 'cheap holidays' for example. Always reading about what Google want but what do bing want? Any advice much appreciated.

Wiki/Knowledge bases
Hi A client of mine is creating a knowledge base/wiki for their website. There using there suppliers own knowledge base (basically their a reseller). What would be the best practice with regards to duplicate content. Would it be best to make all the pages "no follow"? and block the pages by the robot.txt?

Should I use canonical?
I'm working on a site that sells audio tracks, the site is a Wordpress build. I've got Yoast and XML Sitemaps running for SEO. The site has been developed (not by myself) to use a flash based audio player. Now this player offers the ability to share, sell products etc... The player has been placed on the homepage and the main music catalog page. The main catalog page has had a custom page type created for itself. This page has been created in such a way that if you visit the actual page from dashboard > Pages and add content then no content will appear on the page. Even the page header is pulled from the PHP. So really as far as I am aware no real content is being seen on the page by a search engine. Except the content on the side bars (it has 2 sidebars on either side of the page.) The homepage has an introductory paragraph and header which are editable via the normal method in Wordpress. A custom post type has been created specifically for music items. When a music item is uploaded it is added to the music item feed on the homepage and music catalog pages. It also creates a separate post for the item itself. These items at the moment also have 'no content' as they are only sidebars with a flash music player. I've started to add short paragraphs and headers to them so there is content on the music item posts. I cannot however, in the time frame/budget start entering deeply descriptive content about each item. (I considered adding the intro paragraph from the homepage and using a canonical tag to the homepage on every music item). So here is my question. What do I do with these music items? Do I use canonical and point them toward the music catalog or the homepage? If so which one? I want the homepage or music catalog page to rank well and I am concerned that search engines aren't going to see these most vital parts of the site. I don't think individual items ranking is helpful, so what do i do?!?! The home and catalog pages are the two main pages of the site. I am going to advise a new player, page type etc... be utilised but at the moment I need a solution quickly. Any help will be much appreciated.

Website not ranking for noncompetitive terms
Hi, We've took over a website last July and no matter what we do we just can't get it ranking in Google, even for noncompetitive terms. here is the website in question: http://www.alignandsmile.co.uk Ideally the client would like to rank for Canary Wharf but that location is competitive, the site doesn't even rank for 'Dentist New Providence Wharf E14' despite it being included in the title tag on the home page and in the content throughout the website. Directories with Align and Smile's business information do rank however. I opened a case with google through Webmaster tools and they 'reviewed your site and found no manual actions by the webspam team that might affect your site's ranking in Google.' So I'm a bit stuck. The site ranks top for the keyphrase in Bing and Yahoo...we are really struggling with Google! Any help would be much appreciated. many thanks Marcus

Sudden ranking drop, no manual action
Sort of a strange situation I'm having and I wanted to see if I could get some thoughts. Here's what has happened... Monday morning, I realized that my website, which had been showing up at the bottom of page 2 for a specific result, had now been demoted to the bottom of page 6 (roughly a 40 spot demotion). No other keyword searches were affected. I immediately figured that this was some sort of keyword-specific penalty that I had incurred. I had done a bit of link building over the weekend (two or three directory type sites and a bio link from a site I contribute to). I also changed some anchor text on another site to match my homepage's title tag (which just so happened to be the exact phrase match I had dropped in) - I assumed this was what got me. I was slowly beginning to climb up the rankings and just got a bit impatient/overzealous. Changed the anchor text back to what it originally was and submitted a reconsideration request on Tuesday. This morning, I get the automated response in Webmaster Tools that no manual action had been taken. So my question is, would this drop have been an automated deal? If that's the case, then it's going to be mighty hard to pinpoint what I did wrong, since there's no way to know when I did whatever it was to cause the drop. Any ideas/thoughts/suggestions to regain my modest original placement?

Using the Canonical Tag
Hi, I have an issue that can be solve with a canonical tag, but I am not sure yet, we are developing a page full of statistics, like this: www.url.com/stats/ But filled with hundreds of stats, so users can come and select only the stats they want to see and share with their friends, so it becomes like a new page with their slected stats: www.url.com/stats/?id=mystats The problems I see on this is: All pages will be have a part of the content from the main page 1) and many of them will be exactly the same, so: duplicate content. My idea was to add the canonical tag of "www.url.com/stats/" to all pages, similar as how Rand does it here: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/canonical-url-tag-the-most-important-advancement-in-seo-practices-since-sitemaps But I am not sure of this solution because the content is not exactly the same, page 2) will only have a part of the content that page 1) has, and in some cases just a very small part. Is the canonical tag useful in this case? Thank you!
