HubPages, Squidoo and subdomains
-
Just want to check my thinking on something. So, Google says subdomains stand on their own right? They don't get juice from the root domain. If this is true, the subdomains on a site like HubPages or WordPress.com are essentially a PR0 domain, right? Something like, mysub.hubpages.com.
But if you posted an article on Squidoo, a site that doesn't use subdomains, you should get some juice from the root domain passed to your post, right?
I usually go the guest blogging route, but I recently read a couple of posts on Web 2.0 link wheels swearing they are awesome, but most of the time the recommendation is to build it using what I perceive to be PR0 sites - Wordpress.com, Tumblr, HubPages subdomains. You would have to develop those sites so they have PR in order to pass juice.
Am I off base here or does building a link wheel in this way seem like a waste of time?

Why do people jaywalk in a busy intersection?
They want to get somewhere faster & are willing to take the risk of getting hit by a car because it "could never happen to them"
OR
They just don't know better, SEO is sort of this weird tiny little niche market that is not understood very well and to make matters worse, it changes every month...
I have had good friends who are very smart but had to have long arguments with them on SEO, They love giving me text links, but to my name only "because linking to my NAME" is the best thing. I have to explaine to them over and over again that a text link that describes my product "boudoir photography" "pin up photography" is much better...So they go the extra mile and spend oodles of time and make me a super pretty graphic and link to me from a banner...
Same with PR0 linking essays & blog posts, they just don't know any better.
(what was a GREAT solution 5 years ago is now hurting rankings)
The funny thing about SEO in general is older sites still have higher rankings, so the OLD SEO advice in many cases is still at the top of SERPS. So every day people who are just learning read for days on how good linking from squidoo pages are...when in the past year it has taken a huge hit, same as paid blogs.... SEO is actually very harmful to the current relevant education of SEO....

Thanks, Cyrus. This answers my question perfectly.

Hi John,
I'd say your basic assumption is correct. A subdomain on Wordpress.com, or any other 2.0 site, without any extra external links, is basically the same as starting a site from scratch on your own domain.
Blackhats once, and still do, like to use so-called 2.0 sites because
- they can build them up in bulk
- they can create a lot of accounts anonymously
- they can burn them easily when they are done.
Even then, they still must throw a ton of auto-generated, low quality links at these subdomains to get them to rank for anything. It's a common practice today, despite all the hard work involved. It's been going on for years, and I suppose some people still see it as "easy" - I view it as nothing but.
Hope this helps. Best of luck with your SEO!

Thanks for the reply. Maybe I didn't ask the question properly. I'm aware of Panda and its implications. I don't build link wheels. I'm trying to understand the rationale. So, I read a couple (recent) articles where folks were swearing by Web 2.0 sites for link building. So my question is really about the whole premise of using a site like HubPages as a source for backlinks.
If a subdomain that you just created on a site like that has PR0, what is the point? Why do so many people use those sites for backlinks, whether they are building a link wheel or not?
Hopefully that is more clear. I'm wondering if I'm missing something because I do not see the big advantage to doing that.

Panda has changed SEO.

Link wheels in 2009 might have worked but no longer.

Will deindexing a subdomain negate the benefit of backlinks leading to that subdomain?
My client has a subdomain from their main site where their online waiver tool lives. Currently, all the waivers generated by users are creating indexed pages, I feel they should deindex that subdomain entirely. However, a lot of their backlinks are from their clients linking to their waivers. If they end up deindexing their subdomain, will they lose the SEO benefit of backlinks pointing to that subdomain? Thanks! Jay

Our subdomain hosts content that can not be optimized (static videos) - should I de-index it?
We host static tours on a subdomain that points to the video tour host. I can not add meta or optimize any of these video pages and there are thousands. Should I de-index the entire subdomain? I am seeing errors for no meta, dup content etc in MOZ reporting. If yes, do I add the Disallow: /subdomain.root.nl/ to the primary domain's website/CMS or in DNS records ? Our web company is saying the no follow needs to be added in DNS but I feel like it should be added to the robots.txt file if SERP's are going to acknowledge the sub is no longer to be crawled and the primary is no longer to be penalized. Thank you so much in advance!

Changing URL to a subdomain?
Hi there, I had a website www.footballshirtcollective.com that has been live since July. It contains both content and eCommerce. I am now separating out the content so that; 1. The master domain is www.footballshirtcollective.com (content) pointing to a new site 2. Subdomain is store.footballshirtcollective.com (ecommerce) - pointing to the existing site. What do you advise I can do to minimise the impact on my search? Many thanks Mike

Subdomain or folder for a section not focused on my core business
Hello there, I'm installing your analytics tool and it seems really great. I'm gonna use it for sure but I've a question that is more strategic and it's something the tool can't help me with 😛 I've a website active from 2008 and really well known in my country as a service website... we're like your "advisor" for utilities and insurances. The reason why is "savings" but really focused on utilities (broadband, gas, electricity) and check accounts or insurances. I’ve always used folders in my URLs instead of subdomains (for example www.site.com/section1 or www.site.com/section2 ). In this period I’m planning to open a new website section related to saving but not really close with what we really do in the rest of the website. This section is about coupons, vouchers and little offers. The problem is that with that section I’m going to write really a lot (a lot) of content trying to gain a lot of external links. It’s obvious that I already have a lot of contents about my core business and I’m going to write contents for original categories too. This section is anyway secondary for my business and my worry is that Google can identify me in the future as a website mainly focused on this new product. I’m really well indexed so I don’t want this decision to have any effect on my original situation. Finally the question 😛 Is it better to maintain for this section the same website structure with folders or indentify it as a subdomain to remark that it’s going to be like a totally different site with his dedicated news and all the rest? That’s why I’m evaluating a subdomain but I’m not really convinced cause subdomains can be considered as a different approach compared to original structure and of course using folder can be useful to gain root’s site rank. On the other hand, what can Google think about my core business? Thanks a lot for your help

Moving Part of a Website to a Subdomain to Remove Panda Penalty?
I have lots of news on my website and unlike other types of content, news posts quickly become obsolete and get a high bounce rate. I have reasons to think that the news on my website might be partly responsible for a Panda penalty so I'm not sure. There are over 400 news posts on the blog from the last 4 years so that's still a lot of content. I was thinking of isolating the news articles on a subdomain (news.mywebsite.com) If the news play a part in the Panda penalty, would that remove it from the main domain?

Subdomain or subdirectory
We're a big social networking site with over 1 million indexed pages and over 4 million visits a month. Our PR is 7. We're about to acquire and rebrand the content of a large reviews website, current PR 3. The new content will be treated as a 'site within a site' with different navigation and interface. With these factors in mind I think we need to create a new subdomain for the reviews site but I need to factor in the SEO implications, bearing in mind that new advertisers are going to be looking closely at our stats. Migrating the content to a new subdomain I understand will be easier than siting it in a new folder. Any advice appreciated

Examples of sites other than Hubpages that have used subdomains to recover from Panda?
Everyone knows subdomains worked for Hubpages to recover from Panda. Does anyone know of other examples of sites that have recovered from Panda using subdomains?

Pros and Cons of new subdomain and redirecting old subdomain?
Hi guys, I am thinking about redirecting the ranking subdoman to a new subdomain which has my main keyword within it. I am trying to outrank an exact match competitor and don't seem to be able to do so. For example: page.example.com would be my existing ranking URL which is very powerful, and I am thinking about redirecting this to a new URL being keywordpage.example.com What are your thoughts on do this? Thanks B
