Are micro formats and schema.org a worthwhile investment of my time?
-
Hi all,
I recently watched this webinar http://www.seomoz.org/webinars/microformats-real-life-use-cases and it was very good, but I'm not entirely certain if this is a worthwhile thing to be doing?
I have a couple of websites I'm improving the SEO on, and things are slowly picking up but I'm not sure if I should be spending time working on improving my landing pages (once these have been identified) or working on the code side of improving my SEO position.
When improving my landing pages I'm asking myself the following questions:
- What is this page about? (Is it clear through headings or introduction text / imagery
- Does the page sell the benefits of the product / service in a clear manor?
- Does the page explain what the product is all about?
- Is the information easy to read, well positioned on-screen and is the content optimised for 1, maybe 2 distinct keywords.
- Is there an easy method of communication to the site owner if the visitor is interested in the product or service and wants either a quote or wants to find out more.
- Are there a few links to other relevant areas of the site
Granted at the moment I'm in the process of teasing the relevant information out of the client but that's like trying to get blood out of a stone, so I'm exploring other avenues, while they get more content.
I am considering going down the route of guest blogging, to possibly get a one-way followed backlink, but again this seems like a lot of effort with no clear guarantee if my efforts in doing this will pay off in being able to generate more leads / enquiries from the websites.
Would anyone like to share their thoughts on this?

Thank you for the link Thomas, I agree I'm always dubious when looking at posts saying "X% increase in ..." because its hard to know if the testing / statistics are accurate.
I have a few websites so I might try this on one of them and see what effect it has on rankings and incoming visors, seems like an interesting concept.

I think you need to invest time in implementing schema data eventually. When the SERPs you compete in start being filled up with rich snippets, you will have a hard time getting clicks without them.
Some blog posts report a 30 % higher CTR after marking up their snippets with schema / RDF. See for example: http://searchengineland.com/how-to-get-a-30-increase-in-ctr-with-structured-markup-105830
This being said, I really doubt the validity of such posts. It is very hard to measure, and before/after experiments are almost always flawed.

In my opinion every little bit helps.
Having a nifty bio photo might not gain you rankings but it WILL gain you clicks, & clicks gain you conversions.
In a very round about way those higher conversions seem to help SERPS.

Schema - LocalBusiness markup for national companies
If we are marking up schema for a company that does services nationally, but has one physical location, should we use LocalBusiness for the organization type? It's an advertising company that is based in North Carolina, but services companies nationally. Thanks as always friends!

GetListed.Org Personal Profile?
Why do about half of the business directories on getlisted.org want a personal profile when creating/claiming a business listing? Why would a medium to large business need personal profile content on the listing?

Sites interlinked - how much changes to make at one time
Hello, A client has their main site interlinked with 3 other of their sites. The main site is not ranked as high as it should for the main term, which the the anchor text used in all 3 interlinking sites. They're having a main sitewide link changed to nofollows today. Should we worry about doing too much at the same time? I'm thinking about either taking off the interlinking or changing it to brand anchor text.

Does anyone have any experience using GoodRelations Snippet Generator for E-Commerce versus markup from Schema.org?
I am trying to implement Structured Data markup on a large e-commerce site that has ancient code and is not on any standard e-commerce platform. It is a Webstore we self-host that was developed for us and heavily customized. What's worse is that I don't have access to the source code. I have to somehow instruct our IT Director how and where to place everything. So I'm going to need to be meticulously specific. As I began wading through our code and determining where to insert code as instructed by Schema.org I ran across this on one of their pages: "This class contains derivatives of properties from the GoodRelations Vocabulary for E-Commerce, created by Martin Hepp. GoodRelations is a data model for sharing e-commerce data on the Web that can be expressed in a variety of syntaxes, including RDFa and HTML5 Microdata. More information about GoodRelations can be found at http://purl.org/goodrelations/." I went to check it out and it appears that this could be a great resource as it has a snippet generator and several "cookbooks" for adding micro data to our site. Here's a link to their snippet generator: http://www.ebusiness-unibw.org/tools/grsnippetgen/ However, with a catalog of 5,000 SKUs, needless to say we aren't going to plug in our products into this generator one-by one. Has anyone here successfully used GoodRelations to help them implement micro data into a large E-commerce site that isn't a standard platform (not Magento, WP, Joomla or Volusion) ?? I would be very greatful to anyone who can share their experiences and or make suggestions on how we might best proceed. Thanks! Dana

Schema.org on Youtube iframe embed?
So I've tried scouring the internet on the proper way to markup youtube videos. I know there's the VideoObject propery but that seems to be more made for the old school embed code that looks like this: <embed width="100%" id="video-player-flash" height="100%" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://s.ytimg.com/yt/swfbin/watch_as3-vflpp9opi.swf" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" bgcolor="#000000" flashvars="el=embedded&fexp=904001%2C914057%2C918000%2C910206%2C907217%2C907335%2C921602%2C919306%2C922600%2C919316%2C920704%2C912804%2C913542%2C919324%2C912706&is_html5_mobile_device=false&tabsb=1&hl=en_US&eurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.dial800.com%2Fblog%2Fvideos%2Fdial800-product-overview-video&iurl=http%3A%2F%2Fi4.ytimg.com%2Fvi%2Fgk1aD9UCKYA%2Fhqdefault.jpg&tspto=12000&probably_logged_in=1&tsp_buffer=10&video_id=gk1aD9UCKYA&tsp_dvrloop=50&sendtmp=1&enablejsapi=1&sk=WZy3rFIXzzhTB_BpmE1p1tTsbxMib1vIC&rel=1&playlist_module=http%3A%2F%2Fs.ytimg.com%2Fyt%2Fswfbin%2Fplaylist_module-vfl3lol2H.swf&jsapicallback=ytPlayerOnYouTubePlayerReady&playerapiid=player1&framer=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.dial800.com%2Fblog%2Fvideos%2Fdial800-product-overview-video"> Do I need to use that code or is it possible to mark it up using just the clean iframe src that youtube provides now?

Best SEO format for a blog page on an ecommerce website.. inc Source Ordered Content
Does anyone know of a page template or code I might want to base a blog on as part of an eccomerce website? I am interested in keeping the look (includes) of the website and paying attention to Source Ordered Content helping crawlers index the new great blogs we have to share. I could just knock up a page with a template from the site but I would like to investigate SOC at this stage as it may benefit us in the long run. Any ideas?
