How to SEO a website that is being help back by duplicate content?
-
We have over 20 websites that sell property. Each website is targeted to a different country. People advertise to sell their property. The websites are not getting to page 1 for the terms we want probably because of duplication issues. If we compare one website with another country website on www.duplicatecontent.net we find it is nearly 70% between one and the other. So we trying to understand why this is. If someone wanted to sell a property in Spain we would create an advert for them but rather than putting this on the back-end of the Spain website it goes on a separate website that does on all countries. We have tried to put nofollow tags so that the country specific website gets acknowledgement of being the original website but the rankings for key-terms will not rise and the duplication % remains nearly 70%. Can anyone suggest the best way forward?

You are mixing up terminology.
<noindex>- applies to the entire webpage or website.</noindex>
<nofollow>- applies to links</nofollow>

How about creating RSS feeds on the Turkey site and adding them to all other sites on your farm (Russia etc.).
This would give you more links and the content would exist only once as the RSS usually refers back to the original link.

Sorry for being unclear. We are only interested in gaining people from UK and Ireland to sell their property in for example Spain and we have the geographical targeting set up already. This is not the issue. The issue is that the Spain website is coming out with a 70% duplicate content with the Turkey website. So the advert for Property Turkey is being put on backend of propertyanywhere.com and then made live on this website as well as the Property Turkey website as well as a Russian and Chinese website. Our tech team have put a nofollow on the "Property Anywhere" website as well as the Russian and Chinese website so that the Turkey Property website is considered to be the original content and help its naturally listings. However, the naturally listings wont go up and Turkey website is still coming up as 70% dupicate content of for example the Spain website. Very messy I know which is our problem

I'm a little confused about what you are trying to accomplish, but I'll give it a shot.
If you have a website that you want to ONLY rank in Spain, go to GWT > sit configuration > settings > Geographic target > Spain. "IF" you do this, nothing on this site will show anywhere else except in http://www.google.es/. "IF" you are trying to sell property in Spain to an American, then don't do this because you're listings will never come out in Google.com.
If you are having a duplicate content problem, then rel=canonical it using a plugin in your CMS. http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/rel-canonical-html-head/

Do Blog Comments On Your Site Help SEO?
There is a lot of debate as whether or not having comments on your blog is helpful from an SEO perspective. Proponents believe that more comments (1) creates more content, which search engines love, (2) creates more relevant keywords that can be searched, and (3) helps with "freshness" of the site/content leading to greater site authority. Others like Joost de Valk believe that comments can actually hurt SEO because keyword density cannot be controlled. He argues that his top SEO content are pages not posts for this very reason. What is your opinion?

Local SEO - Rich content and list of towns enough?
I'm working on creating pages to target local SEO. I've created pages for example 'wedding band london' with useful content and optimised them with title tags, alt tags etc and will continue to do so for major cities and queries where there are significant search volume. However, I also want to pickup longtail local search queries such as 'wedding band camden' etc... Will adding a list of towns somewhere on the page for each city or county help drive traffic to the site from such queries? Is so what's the best way to structure the page?

How do you avoid duplicate content when you sell products that are produced by other manufacturers?
I have a packaging product site, and they sell products from various manufacturers. What can we do with the product detail pages? As of now, the client has copy pasted content straight from the "About" sections on the manufacturers' sites. Obviously, those manufacturers want my client to sell their products, and the products need to be described. How much of a no-no is this copy pasting, and how can I fix it?

Is rel=canonical used only for duplicate content
Can the rel-canonical be used to tell the search engines which page is "preferred" when there are similar pages? For instance, I have an internal page that Google is showing on the first page of the SERPs that I would prefer the home page be ranked for. Both the home and internal page have been optimized for the same keyword. What is interesting is that the internal page has very few backlinks compared to the home page but Google seems to favor it since the keyword is in the URL. I am afraid a 301 will drop us from the first page of the SERPs.

References and SEO?
Hi Everyone, I am really new to the SEO world (having come from paid search), so if this is a stupid question, I apologize. I noticed in Webmaster Tools that the top 25 keywords or so that Google thinks my site is about are keywords pulled from our references pages. Our site has a ton of authoritative content, most of which have corresponding reference pages with overlapping sources. Is this a problem? I am a little concerned that the keywords Google thinks are the most relevant to my site are really the least relevant. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks! nina
