I have evidence that product videos are hurting our rankings - How do I hide them!?
-
We normally rank between #1-3 for long-tail product related keywords in our industry.
Then we saw our rankings drop when we added product videos to some of our product pages.
My hypothesis was that for most ecommerce-related queries, Google has a certain aesthetic that they are going for in the SERP's. They like to show video listings somewhere in the middle of the first page.. not as one of the first 3 results.
- Product page
- Product page
- Google shopping results
- Product page
- Video Result on product page
- Video Result on product page
- Product page
I did an experiment by removing the product videos from a selection of our product pages and as soon as they were reindexed w/o the video we saw an average of a 3 spot jump in rankings!
Since the product videos have actually helped on-site conversion rate.. we'd like to keep them on the product pages but hide them from being indexed by Google.
Is there a safe way to do this? Is it possible to use an i-frame, or will Google still see the video on the page and index it as such.
Thanks for any advice!

Hi Charlie,
so - first of all, are you actually losing any traffic as a result of lower rankings? More often than not, while video results may appear lower down in the page to fit in with an aesthetic model - they get a higher click through rate. If you are retaining or increasing overall traffic for those keywords in-spite of lower rankings, then you are actually in a better position than you were before.
The reason for wanting to get higher up in the SERPs is to get more traffic, but if you can get high click through's in 5th with a video than in 1st without - then 5th position is more beneficial. This feels counter-intuitive, but with the expansion of rich snippets and personalised search - we need to start thinking much wider than just rankings. Rankings are only as good as the traffic they provide.
If you are desperate to lose the video rich snippets (which feels like it would be a step backwards), then you could try one of a few things:
- As you mention, use an Iframe to embed. Google probably wont index it (though it's not unheard of!)
- Hide the video with CSS and then have it appear in a lightbox player with a JS trigger.
- Put the video on a separate page and aim to get two results for the same term (one video and one non-video). NB - this is basically self cannibalisation and could backfire, so I wouldn't recommend it, but it might be worth a try.
Google are doing a lot of tests at the moment and are shifting things around in the SERPs based on rich snippets and content type as much as "relevancy". The model of "higher up = better" doesn't really apply any more and so, in your position i would be inclined to hold tight and see where things go in the next few months. If you're getting product video rich snippets, you're probably in a good position and building more links to the pages may help them to appear higher up and with the rich snippets. Its really not clear how things will end up looking in the not too distant future and I would advise against taking a short term strategy to increase rankings if you're not actually losing a significant amount of traffic.
Hope that's helpful,
Phil

I would try a little experiment and try hosting a video on youtube and linking to it. I have seen videos on youtube in the past get a preference and it may work for you instead of self hosting.
Even if it's against your business model to use youtube, the experiment would be wonderful for the community to see if your listings would be affected with a self hosted or YT hosted video
-
We created the videos ourselves and are self-hosting.
All videos have a unique title
-
are the videos identical to other videos that are being used by other people?
Did you give them a unique title?
Do you have the videos on youtube?

SEO rank down after Magento migration
Since November we migrated our shop from Magento 1 to 2 and our organic traffic has dropped by 50%. We still haven't figured out the cause (or a solution). Are there more Magento users who have the same issue? Charlotte (www.dochorse.nl)

Duplicate content on product pages
Hi, We are considering the impact when you want to deliver content directly on the product pages. If the products were manufactured in a specific way and its the same process across 100 other products you might want to tell your readers about it. If you were to believe the product page was the best place to deliver this information for your readers then you could potentially be creating mass content duplication. Especially as the storytelling of the product could equate to 60% of the page content this could really flag as duplication. Our options would appear to be:1. Instead add the content as a link on each product page to one centralised URL and risk taking users away from the product page (not going to help with conversion rate or designers plans)2. Put the content behind some javascript which requires interaction hopefully deterring the search engine from crawling the content (doesn't fit the designers plans & users have to interact which is a big ask)3. Assign one product as a canonical and risk the other products not appearing in search for relevant searches4. Leave the copy as crawlable and risk being marked down or de-indexed for duplicated contentIts seems the search engines do not offer a way for us to serve this great content to our readers with out being at risk of going against guidelines or the search engines not being able to crawl it.How would you suggest a site should go about this for optimal results?

Website Suddenly dropping rank
Morning Moz Fans: My URL is: http://goo.gl/Dhbjwj According to MOZ, which we are tracking this URL with, somewhere between the 3rd Feb and 10th the domain went from being fairly well indexed to being dropped to pages further back than 6-7, for pretty much everything, even the company name was only registering at the bottom of page one. Around this time we were transferring the website from .php into wordpress, so we were creating new pages, called by the same names and all the same content but we created the wordpress area in a sub domain of the website. Again around this time we had an issue with the blog area and had to take it down for 4-5 weeks due to some errors which meant google wouldn't have been able to crawl these pages properly, but the rest of the website was up and running. We also discovered recently that the company have and use this domain http://goo.gl/5JvDUH So my question is, what do you think caused the problem? has it been premaritally penalised? is there a way I can get google to specifically look at it and is there any more i can do?Thank you for your help

Are links to our website through our affiliate program hurting our rankings?
We have an affiliate program for an educational related course product and I am becoming worried that links to us on our affiliate's websites are hurting our site rankings. I have read that google is usually pretty good about picking up on affiliate links and not giving the follow links credit, but not sure if that is just for the big affiliate networks or if they can spot less obvious affiliate programs. With this in mind, would you ask all affiliates to use the nofollow tag on all links coming in, or would you make sure that the links are more branded in nature? There are a mix of text links along with banners and other display components. There would be editing that would need to be done to the core files of our affiliate/member software (aMember Pro) to make all links nofollow and we want to see if there are other recommendations before doing so. We are trying to fight out way out of what we believe is an over-optimized anchor text penalty and are evaluating all areas that we can make improvements. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Video SEO
Hello All! I'm wondering about the best way to link build and carry on my video trend. I love to create video's with all of my articles as I feel it adds an extra element to just boring old text! The problem is that my current 25 links from Youtube are all NoFollow. This didn't originally bother me, but it's starting too. Is there a couple of websites that I could upload my article/ video to and gain a link from in a similar manner? Come to think of it, is this a good SEO tactic to use?

Strange Ranking Fluctuation - Some Predictions?
My client is the green line currently on 3 & 4. The pages that rank 3 & 4 are 3 -> home page targeted to main keyword 4 -> specific service page targeting same main keyword as home page (a bit of cannibalization) The competitor targets other keyword as their main keyword. The 1 & 2 position is taken by him but with 2 different sites (2 sites -> 1 owner). They have a high pa & da but is from gaming websites and stuff while my client has targeted good links. Any predictions... would the green go back again ? 🙂 IuVio.jpg
