E Commerce Product URL SEO
-
Hi, first question here.
In response to Paddy's wonderful article and Rand's related article from 09 I've found myself asking this question.
"www.home.co.uk/product" or "www.home.co.uk/category/product"
As I'm currently reviewing the structure for so many of our e com sites the article comes at a great time.
I'm going for home/category/product so I can optimise for a category, as category based searches are quite high and competitive.
Yes some products can appear in 2 categories but I'm combating it with 301's or image based links.
What are your thoughts.
-
I would go for the nice product URL's with (sub)categories in it. That way users and search engines will understand your website better imho. You should of course think well about your website structure before you launch. If you do that well and you're quite sure you're doing the right thing you should be good.
I'm very interested in why David chose the /product system. Did that give your better results in the SERPS?
-
breadcrumbs was exactly what I was going to say
-
Thats down to a inherent limitation of our CMS, and a massive pai i the backside.
if I had a choice it would be /Category/Product. Other sites which I have worked on over the years I've always used Category/product to great effect
-
There seems to be a whole load of information floating around the web about canonical and redirects but all only give suggestions of where each can be used apposed to a definitive best practice answer.
If anyone has tested the effectiveness of each it would be great to see some examples.
-
Hanger world is currently using /home/product/product ID
As apposed to home/category/product.
-
Think usability, if Im browsing the category, /Buttons/BlueButtonsadBuckles and I get redirected to /Buckles/BlueButtonandBuckles, all of a sudden I'm not where I am and I didnt ask to be moved.
See my point?
-
Thanks for the reply.
I can see on your site your using redirects to the home/product.
It seems a great way to go, Id assume that optimising a category with 301 links to products will pass on the "juice".
The shorter url is favored by search engines anyway I suppose.
-
Thanks for the reply.
I would agree for usability the category/product options is better, but could be tackled using breadcrumbs?
Is using canonical when category produces duplicate content not just a lazy alternative to 301's?
Shouldn't 301 redirects be used when a product appears in more than one category?
Would having home/product with canonical and 301's from /category/product not be the best option?
-
Don't think SEO, think User Experience...
My personal preference is for /category/product for the simple reason that the URL looks better and a visitor can establish their position within the site just by glancing at the URL.
get round the dupe product issue by being able to specify which Category is to be the primary category for a product and then set a canonical tag to reflect this.
Info on canonicals here http://www.seomoz.org/learn-seo/canonicalization

I would stick with /product to be honest. that way in the future when you decide to move products around and combine categories etc you will not have as much work to do with 301 redirects.
I have tried both, after 12 months I decided to move to the /product system, it was a massive overhaul but it was worth the effort in the end.

H1 for users or SEO in this case
Hello, A client of mine has an online store with a pre-made cart. In this cart the name below the product in the category pages and the H1 tag on the product pages themselves are the same textbox entry (they have to be the same thing) We want to add two product features to the product name, but this will make the H1 longer and diluted. Let me give you a fictional example, A category page for cross-trainer shoes would have products in it. Below each product it says things like "Nike Sports One Shoes" and "Adidas Action Series Shoes". We want to make it "Nike Sports Shoes size 7 through 12 for running and walking" and "Adidas Action Series Shoes size 5 through 10 for running, walking, and hiking". The reason for the change is that we want users to know about size and one more important feature before they visit the product page in our case to save them time. But this changes the H1 on the product page (a pre-made cart problem) from "Adidas Action Series Shoes" which is the direct search term to "Adidas Action Series Shoes size 5 through 10 for running, walking, and hiking" which is not a direct search term. This dilutes the keyword in the H1 but will save users time. We will put a tag inside the H1 just so you know, so that we can bold the name of the product to still be seen clearly, I hope that's not an HTML SEO problem. **What do you think, for users with diluted SEO or better SEO in this case? Our product pages are our most important pages in this industry. Thanks**

New To SEO Management, I just want to double check that my idea will work.
I am new to SEO management. I had a 3 month SEO copy writing internship and a 5 month SEO temp job. In both I mostly wrote copy, but I've been teaching myself SEO on the side, I became Google certified. I ended up getting a telemarketing job and somehow the conversation of SEO came up and I winded up managing their SEO for 12 dollars an hour. They say that every lead generated from the website that turns into a sale will be worth 10 dollars and if and when the sales exceed my paycheck I will starting making commission so long as it stays above my hourly. SEO is very fun and this is like my dream job. They are leaving the planning 100% up to me and I want to make sure that what I am doing will work. My plan is as follows: Part 1: Page Authority via backlinks and social media We are health care brokers and my boss, the owner has a lot of contact. He is talking with large unions like, "The Teamsters," and large company retirment groups like, "Blue flame," which is apparently in some way connected to DTE or GE. Long story short, I am trying to get him to convince them to give us a back link to our main page. He also has a ton of clients that own companies. This is good because they may be persuaded to give us backlinks too. In addition, the tech guy thinks he can implement something where we can get a google +1, facebooks likes/shares, twitter likes and shares and pintrest pin it's that would be a part of an email that we send to people within the list of 12,000 clients. From what I can see, from the client base and the people we are working with we should be able to raise the page authority substantially despite the fact that the site is only a few months old and is not yet out of the sand box. I have been slowly picking off each error with SEO MOZ's website crawling. Part 2: Making a Insurance Jargon Dictionary Guide For The Tri-purpose of gathering traffic, proving our professionalism and helping people understand semi-complex insurance jargon. I could build these 2-3 keywords would be addressed per page and they would be defined in a way to help people looking for terms understand them, while simultaneously netting a strong keyword density and a strong page. I think as far as I can tell there are no issues. Part 3: The dictionary pages will pull in new traffic and the home page will receive links and distribute link juice to the sub-pages. This subpages will guide traffic back to the main page with no-follow links to direct people from the unique termed landing pages to the home page for insurance processing. As far as I can tell my logic is solid and on paper this should work. Am I missing anything (like key details, flaws in my plan)?

How to provide product information without duplicate content?
Hi all, I have an ecommerce website with approx 400 products, these are quite technical products and i use to have helpful information about the products on the product pages... My SEO company told me to remove all this, as i had lots of duplicate content issues... I have since had content writers re-write all product descriptions (about 250 words per product)... and now i am trying to figure out a way of getting the "helpful" information back on but in some kind of dynamic way... There is basically about 5 or 6 blocks of information, that can be added to each product page, these overlap hundreds of products. i was thinking of perhaps creating a separate static page for each block of useful information, and putting links on the product pages to this... however, ideally i would prefer to not keep sending customers to other pages... so wanted to see if others had come across similar issues themselves and how they went about having this "content" available to the user but in such a way it was not duplicate content... Please note using images would not be any good here, as the content varies in size but most of it is text based... regards James

URL parameters causing duplicate content errors
My ISP implemented product reviews. In doing so, each page has a possible parameter string of ?wr=1. I am not receiving duplicate page content and duplicate page title errors for all my product URLs. The report shows the base URL and the base URL?wr=1. My ISP says that the search engines won't have a problem with the parameters and a check of Google Webmaster Tools for my site says I don't have any errors and recommends against configuring URL parameters. How can I get SEOmoz to stop reporting these errors?
