Blocked by meta-robots but there is no robots file
-
OK, I'm a little frustred here. I've waited a week for the next weekly index to take place after changing the privacy setting in a wordpress website so Google can index, but I still got the same problem. Blocked by meta-robots, no index, no follow. But I do not see a robot file anywhere and the privacy setting in this Wordpress site is set to allow search engines to index this site. Website is www.marketalert.ca
What am I missing here? Why can't I index the rest of the website and is there a faster way to test this rather than wait another week just to find out it didn't work again?

The .htaccess file is in placing directing www to non www, so I don't see what else I could do with that. I forgot to mention the website was recently overhauled by someone else, and they are having me help with SEO. Not sure if that has anything to do with it. It looks like the .htaccess should be reversed so the non www points to the www which has more value. Someone else designed this site and they are having me do the SEO on it for them.

The issue might be the forwarding from www.yourdomain.ca to yourdomain.ca
look at http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/pages?site=marketalert.ca%2F
and here http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/pages?site=www.marketalert.ca%2F
..some are indexed on with www and other without www. , this is your main issue.
recommendation:
- revisit the htaccess file or where the redirect has been set DNS..
- choose one with www or without and stick to it.
- revicit your external links and make the changes to your links
- create new sitemap and resubmit to SearchEngines

I ran the SEO web crawler and it finished already. Successfully crawled all pages. I still have to wait for another week to get the main campaign updated and see results there, but I believe it may work too now.
I guess I solved my own problem after being directed to robots.txt by Jim. I found that the Wordpress plugin for SEO xml sitemap creator was the problem because it created a virtual robots.txt file which sent me on a wild goose chase looking for a robots.txt file which didn't exist. Creating a robots.txt file allowing all seems to be the solultion, incase anyone else has this same problem.

If you can, follow up either way - happy to help you get it debugged!

I was able to update my sitemap.xml with Google webmaster tools no problem. I'm not 100% confident though that means the entire site is searchable by the spiders. I guess I'll know for sure in a few days tops.
-
I agree with Jim. Update your sitemap.xml files with Google Webmaster Tools. That will also help you identify problems you might be missing.

I've done some more looking into it and seems to be a problem when Wordpress uses the XML site generator plugin. It creates a virtual robot.txt file, which is why I couldn't find the robot.txt file. Apparently the only fix is to replace it with an actual robot.txt file forcing it to allow all.
I just replaced the robots.txt file with a real one allowing all. SEOmoz estimates a few days to test site crawl and it's another 7 days before the next scheduled crawl. I'd kinda like to find out sooner if it's not going to work. There must be a faster test. I don't need a detailed test, just a basic test that says, YEP, we can see this many pages or something like that.

hi
your robots.txt file is located here http://marketalert.ca/robots.txt, which is the root of your website directory.
this is the actual location of your sitemap file (http://marketalert.ca/sitemap.xml), does the Google WT show any issues about the sitemap file could not be found?
You might need to resubmit the sitemap file, if there are any changes, of course with the updated version of your site.
hope this helps.

I removed the SEO plug-in which was there and installed Yoast but it made no difference. this is the url: https://www.cotswoldflatroofing.com/ Its coming up with a HTTP error: x-robots tag noindex, nofollow, noarchive

Blocking certain countries via IP address location
We are a US based company that ships only to US and Canada. We've had two issues arise recently from foreign countries (Russia namely) that caused us to block access to our site from anyone attempting to interact with our store from outside of the US and Canada. 1. The first issue we encountered were fraudulent orders originating from Russia (using stolen card data) and then shipping to a US based International shipping aggregator. 2. The second issue was a consistent flow of Russian based "new customer" entries. My question to the MOZ community is this: are their any unintended consequences, from an SEO perspective, to blocking the viewing of our store from certain countries.

When to file a Reconsideration Request
Hi all, I don't have any manual penalties from Google but do have a unnatural links message from them back in 2012. We have removed some of the spammy links over the last 2 years but we're now making a further effort and will use the disavow tool once we've done this. Will this be enough once I submit the file or should I / can I submit a Reconsideration Request as well? Do I have to have a manual penalty item in my webmaster account to be able to submit a request? Thanks everyone!

Very strange: META descriptions not showing
Hello, Since Panda 4.0 has been launched, all of my optimized META description have been gone in Google.
Technical SEO | | MarcelMoz
A while ago, I posted a question about this problem here: http://moz.com/community/q/all-meta-descriptions-gone. I know about Google's own will to decide which META description will be shown. And also about unique content of the descriptions. All pages did have an optimized description before Panda 4.0 and there were no troubles at all, what tells me there is something else going on. I tested some things: Rewrote 50 descriptions to very uinique ones, only five got indexed. This tells me that duplicate content of the descriptions is not the problem (they have never been 100% duplicate, product type was a variable which was always different for each page). Removed cache in GWT and fetched again as Google, didn't help. I checked the pages I tested and they all have been indexed again without showing the optimized descriptions. More information: The first time I changed some META descriptions and fetched the pages again in GWT, Google picked up my new META descriptions and showed them. A few days later, most of them disappeared again (so Google is aware of the description but seems to ignore it). Some pages show the optimized description when I change my search query (only a few, mostly the optimized description never got shown) Technique is ok. Source code shows the right optimized description. META robots isn't blocking anything except NOODP/NOYDIR (always has blocked those). Websites using the exact same CMS, website template, META descriptions (style and build-up), do not have these problems I compared elements like place of description in source code, usage of meta robots, og:description, crawl-delay in robots.txt, and special characters in descriptions between websites that are showing optimized vs. website that don't show optimized descriptions. I can't find any connection. Something I noticed is a change is my Robots.txt file: my webmaster has added the following command:
Crawl-delay: 2 May this have to do with my problem? I guess it doens't. I did some research and there are more websites that are suffering this problem beside mine. This tells me it must be Google (and so Panda 4.0) that is responsible for this change. I realy want my optimized descriptions back. Does anybody have an idea what to do?
Thanks in advance. Marcel0 -
Robots.txt query
Quick question, if this appears in a clients robots.txt file, what does it mean? Disallow: /*/_/ Does it mean no pages can be indexed? I have checked and there are no pages in the index but it's a new site too so not sure if this is the problem. Thanks Karen

Invisible robots.txt?
So here's a weird one... Client comes to me for some simple changes, turns out there are some major issues with the site, one of which is that none of the correct content pages are showing up in Google, just ancillary (outdated) ones. Looks like an issue because even the main homepage isn't showing up with a "site:domain.com" So, I add to Webmaster Tools and, after an hour or so, I get the red bar of doom, "robots.txt is blocking important pages." I check it out in Webmasters and, sure enough, it's a "User agent: * Disallow /" ACK! But wait... there's no robots.txt to be found on the server. I can go to domain.com/robots.txt and see it but nothing via FTP. I upload a new one and, thankfully, that is now showing but I've never seen that before. Question is: can a robots.txt file be stored in a way that can't be seen? Thanks!
