Duplicate Page Title
-
Virtually all of my pages are coming up with a "Duplicate Page Title" error even though the page title are different. I assume this is down to the end of the page title having the company name. Is this the reason and is it a problem to have a page title like below...
"Page title description - Company Name"

Hi Justin
I have now resolved the duplicate page title as mentioned.
However I am still getting lots of "duplicate page content" errors on all my wordpress tags pages. Any idea's why and how to resolve this?
Thanks
Pete

Facepalm. Such a good call. Can't believe I didn't think of that.
-
It isn't possible to change from a root to a subdomain, the only way of doing this is to create a new campaign, you will however start from scratch on the historical data of rankings etc.
I would strongly recommend you keep the campaign set up as is and use 301's to resolve the duplicate issues, as if you don't you rankings are likely to be hurt by duplicate content.
I'm sure you are aware already, but if not, here is the info for setting up 301
For apache
http://www.isitebuild.com/301-redirect.htmFor Windows
http://thatsit.com.au/seo/tutorials/how-to-fix-canonical-domain-name-issuesAs I say, you really should fix this issue as opposed to working around it.

Thanks for the reply. Your right. I can't see the option in my settings to change from a root domain to a sub domain. Any idea's?

I assume here that you are referring to a "Duplicate page Title" error showing up in the SeoMOZ web app?
The most likely issue is that you have set your campaign up as root domain (i.e. with no www prefix for the domain), Root domains are fine, however if the links in your site point to www.domain.com and domain.com this will show as a duplicate page.
This behaviour is by design of SeoMOZ as Google will also be seeing your pages as duplicates which will most likely harm your SERPs
The best solution to this problem is to 301 or rel=canonical to the preferred domain
ie: if a user types in domain.com you 301 to www.domain.com
Make sure you do this for all domains/subdomains you have pointing to your site and add the trailing slash to the domain i.e. http://www.domain.com/ as this gets added anyway.
This will stop the page reporting as duplicates, also Google will only see one version of your pages which should pack some rankings bonus' for you.
Hope that helps
Justin

Depends on the tool you are using but duplicate page title would have to be an exact match on the page title I would expect...
-
Where are you seeing this error appear?
And no, it's unlikely that if all your page titles are being appended with your company name that this would flag duplicate page titles.
If your website is dynamic, it is likely that your page titles are being rewritten but something is delaying the time it takes to rewrite them so any bot/crawler is just detecting them as duplicates... Possibly.
-
Thanks, but I'm still unsure.
Does "Duplicate Page Title" mean the whole page title is used on another page or can it be just certain words are repeated as I am getting lots of errors even thought page title is different?
-
If the words are different it is highly unlikely that this is the issue. It might be possible if the titles were (for example) Sugar-company name Sugars-company name, sugary-company name.
But even then it would be a stretch. Are you sure that your website platfor hasn't dynamically created mirror pages? This happened to us in Magento recently. The developer didn't know any better and we had to set him straight.

Index Page Redirect to Home Page? Best Practices...
Hi, I am wondering what the best practice is when a site has an index page and a home page? I have two pages, listed below, and want to know if I should 301 redirect my "index" page to my standard home page. The home page is where I would like all traffic to fall on for our website. Additionally, I used the rel=canonical tag years ago on the index page to indicate that the home page is the main content. Home Page - https://www.1099pro.com/ (PA 45) Home Page Canonical: rel="canonical" href="https://www.1099pro.com/"/> Index Page - https://www.1099pro.com/index.asp (PA - 33) Index Page Canonical: rel="canonical" href="https://www.1099pro.com/"/> It seems to me that there is some extra juice that could be passed to my home page (which is the page that ranks highly for our major keywords) by 301 redirecting the index page. Is there any reason why I should not do that? Really appreciate any help - especially with extra explanations - for the simple minded like me ;)! -Michael

19 Hours Excessive to Code Single Wordpress Page?
My developer says that is will take 19 hours to modify a listing page of the wpcasa London real estate theme because the existing template is difficult to customize. I am attaching an image of the existing page before customization and an image of a final mock up. Is 19 hours a reasonable amount of time to customize this page? Look forward to feedback. Redirects Not Working / Issue with Duplicate Page Titles
Hi all We are being penalised on Webmaster Tools and Crawl Diagnostics for duplicate page titles and I'm not sure how to fix it.We recently switched from HTTP to HTTPS, but when we first switched over, we accidentally set a permanent redirect from HTTPS to HTTP for a week or so(!).We now have a permanent redirect going the other way, HTTP to HTTPS, and we also have canonical tags in place to redirect to HTTPS.Unfortunately, it seems that because of this short time with the permanent redirect the wrong way round, Google is confused as sees our http and https sites as duplicate content. Is there any way to get Google to recognise this new (correct) permanent redirect and completely forget the old (incorrect) one?Any ideas welcome!

Do pages with low PA effect DA?
I was looking into raising my firm's Domain Authority and I had a thought. I was wondering if our very low PA pages are bringing the overall DA down? Our homepage is at 43 currently and the DA is 32. We have quite a few pages and I am trimming a little fat in the deep pages currently. I was wondering what would be the result in terms of DA I am also starting an aggressive initiative to blog more and try to attract links through guest posting and HARO (Hep A Reporter Out). I understand that many people will say DA is not a metric your should necessarily build around. But, while I am fighting for rankings in a very competitive vertical, I assume a higher DA is better, no? From everything I have read on Moz over the years, they say that the DA metric is the one that tries to encompass a multitude of factors, similar to the way something more complex like the Google algorithm does. So, I assumed finding small gains in DA could be beneficial to the site's rankings and traffic I tried to go into detail and get specific here because I know how many bad questions are asked daily. Thanks anyone and everyone for the help, I do thoroughly appreciate the Moz community

Duplicate content.
Hi there....we're dealing with a duplicate content mess. We're a franchisor(www.kitchensolvers.com), and each of our franchises have their own landing page. The trouble is, the way the landing pages are set up, it's causing all the links available on the national level of the website to be re-indexed each time for every franchise! We don't have an in-house developer and was wondering if anyone else has had similar issues and point me in the right direction.

Seo for flash home page?
I have a client who insists their home page be a single graphic image of their logo with php menus linking to all of the other pages up top. This appears to me to be an seo nightmare. They seem to be unwilling to have anything to do with changing the appearance and want to rely on seo for "all the other pages" on the site. What's an SEO to do in this situation? Is it possible to have a flash image that lands on a "homepage" for google to crawl, rather than a single image? What's the best seo approach here?
